Thanks to the folks on this board talking ,posting ,and sharing their revolvers I have gotten the itch again. Well and maybe a Christmas bonus has something to do with it. Anyways I think I'm going to put a new gun on layaway this week. But still not sure what I want.

Was trying to decide over the last month or two if I wanted a some sort of 1911,than a 10 mm, or maybe even a light weight revolver in 44. But I figured since I have a duty gun with night sights (CZ p01), a gp100 in 357,and a sp1012.24" in 357 ,10 mm is kind of pointless.Especially with ny capacity limits.A compact /light 44 is pointless here with no brown bear and since I own the gp100. And as for 1911 I'd like one one day,but don't have much use other than a range toy for now.

After the responses in a few of the threads regarding 41 and 44 magnums, I think I'm ready to take the plunge . But I'm torn on what platform. I have shot both 41 and 44 mag in Blackhawks. I do not like the plow handle grip. But I think I would like the bisley grip. Stopped into a few gunstores and not one had a bisley Blackhawk to handle .
There are only black bear and whitetail around here to hunt. I need to shoot more to improve my skills so let's say I limit myself to 50 yards max (work my way up to100 over the next few years).

So here's my options:
5.5" stainless Blackhawk bisley-41 mag
$600 + transfer fee

7.5" blue Blackhawk bisley -44 mag/45 colt
$650 +transfer fee

6.5" raging bull-44 mag
$685+transfer fee

6" Smith model 629- 44 mag
$734 ($784-$50 rebate) + transfer fee

7.5" Redhawk(with scope rings)- 44 mag
$840 +transfer fee

7.5" SRH -44 mag
$849+transfer fee

I really like that Blackhawk in 41 mag.the thing is really classy looking too. Plenty of power for the game around here. But I'm little concerned about the sight radius if I want to get more into dedicated handgun hunting later on.instead of just carrying them as a side arm and taking shots that present themselves. My brother who is a little guy at 5'4" 150lbs totes his 7.5" Blackhawk around just fine. Along with a big back pack and a heavy Ruger guide gun in 300rcm. He's like a little pack mule I swear. So I should be fine with a 7.5 even if it is a little cumbersome. Loading and unloading SA is a PITA and slow, but its not like it's a home defense gun.whats your guys thoughts?

Edit- added a few more options

The 7.5" Bisely would be a great hunting revolver. The Redhawk with scope rings would be a great choice also. The Bisely's are more comfortable to shoot over the standard Blackhawk imo. If price wasn't an issue I'd probably opt for the Redhawk.

Also the 44 is a pleasure to reload. I reload full magnums for hunting out of my Blackhawk. Magnums not quite as stout for hunting with my 8.375" model 29 . I load what would be considered hot specials in magnum cases for my 4" model 29. I carry this as my trail gun. Very pleasant to shoot all day at the range and still enough whomp to bag the surprise white tail within in reasonable range of course.
Very excited for you. Let us know how you make out.

Both the RedHawks are options ,but are definitely getting almost out of my price range. 750 is what I'd like to Max out at. But it could be a buy once cry once situation.

I only hunt with a revolver and for here in the mountains I hunt most often with a Ruger 4 5/8" 45lc. For me that is good out to about 100 yards. A longer sight radius would help but I do not want to carry the extra length and weight. If you are ok with 7.5" then that will be more than adequate. I also mostly load my 45 with 255 SWC about 950fps. I also have a S&W 629 I sometimes use. It is a 3" 44mag. and load it with 240 SWC about 1000fps. None of these loads are near magnum levels but more that enough to get the job done and pleasant to practice with. I have a 7.5" Freedom Arms but it stays home most of the time. The 7.5" bisley in either 41 or 44 will get the job done but the 44 will have more ammo available unless you reload.

I dont reload. But I will probably do a bulk order on gunbroker. My dad got 200 rounds of hornady for his .41 for about 17 bucks per box of 20 I believe.

I just picked up a beautiful old model super Blackhawk 7.5", barely used. Happily gave $600 for it. Great shooter, looking forward to putting deer and hog into the freezer with it.

Very nice. Best of luck . Should be a nice shooter!

7.5" blue Blackhawk bisley -44 mag

I like this option. I like the 7.5 inch barrel for hunting, and at that price you still have $100 left in your budget. You can pick up a new Lee Classic 4 hole turret press for $115, which still fits in the budget. Then you just have to buy some components and dies.

Reloading will allow you to shoot a .41 or a .44 a WHOLE LOT MORE than you would otherwise.

My 7.5" 44 magnum Blackhawk is my favorite handgun of many. The long sight radius helps my accuracy a lot. An extra couple inches of barrel increases the weight by only a small amount.

You have gotten great replies, but the truth is that you already stated what you wanted, and you want a reason to go against your gut feeling. Listen to it you can always trade or buy another one if it turns out you did not like your choice. I have found out that I never have second guessed my choices if I truly follow my heart.

bones

Have always been a big fan of the .41 Magnum, having once owned a Model 57 (with a 4" barrel), and a Model 58. For me I like the handier, shorter barrel version. The Ruegr Blackhawk with a 4.62 " barrel would suit me just fine.

Well I'm going to give it a few more days of thought before putting down a deposit. That Lee press is a great idea. Really need to learn reloading. Hopefully by this summer I will have the basement setup for a work space and all the tools out of there. My father reloaded years ago,but my uncle borrowed his setup years back and never returned it. (we call him uncle @$$hole for a reason). So at least he can help with the learning curve.

The 41Mag is a great cartridge( I owned and hunted with one for years) but, if you don't reload, I suggest you skip it and just get a 44Mag. Then at least you can feed it some less expensive/cowboy 44Spl loads when you want to just have some fun range time. Rugers are nice; Smith 69 or 629 are nice too. I think a Smith 69 would be a great hunting gun to carry FWIW. Don't forget the rebate!

How about a Bisley in .44 Special on the smaller flat top frame? It is my favorite iteration of the Ruger Blackhawk and I enjoy shooting mine quite a bit.

Overlooked the 7.5" bisley in .45 colt. Looking at price of cowboy loads I can get them for 55-60 cents a round, and buffalo bore offers some +P ammo for hunting. Might be a good option. Cheaper plinking than the other options untill I can reload, with .44 mag power available for hunting.

Just curious Ive read when some folks push the heavier loads with .45s they need taller front sights? Anyone experience this?

As far as taller front sights, I have some stout 300 grain 44 mag that still shot high after bottoming out the rear sight in my SRH. Might depend on the load and the gun.

Well plans kind of fell through. None of my LGS will deal with budsgunshop. So .41 mag is out of the question. Also no one will do a 90 day layaway. However I should be getting about 200 in gift cards to field and stream for xmas. I also have a credit card through them so I get 0% interest for 1 year for purchases over $399. So im just going to buy through them.

So now its either the 629 (1/2 lug ) or a SRH 7.5". Both are about the same price. Tough choice between them. Smith is sleeker and easier to carry, but not easy easy to mount an optic down the road if I choose too. Also cant hammer it with heavier loads or so the interwebs says. But I will mainly shoot 240 grain factory loads, and 44 specials. But its always nice having a super rugged gun that you dont need to worry about shooting loose like the SRH. Decisions,decisions....
