I have been reading the 3 gun rules and am thinking about trying to shoot a local match soon and I could not find an answer to this question

is there usually a round count portion to a stage? It appears that many stages have a little shooters choice, knock down these 5 plates, 5 poppers, break 5 clays, shoot 4 paper targets and the shooter gets to choose how to balance shotgun and pistol to accomplish this. the videos I have seen show people shooting and reloading until the targets are serviced.

I have read the rules for penalties of not engaging a target or missing a target, but no penalties for shooting 100rds in a stage. (i realize this takes time to shoot, reload, etc)

is 3 gun only about the targets getting shot and not about round count?

Normally shooting more rounds than requires is not penalized. Every once in a while a stage will dictate how many rounds can be fired, exceed that and you earn a penalty.

Thanks, I could not find anything in the big rules discussing misses other than when a target is not hit properly during the stage

Ha, yeah, usually the "penalty" comes in the 0.5 sec to 2 or 3 seconds it takes you to aim and fire each of those extra shots. :)

Correct, in 3 gun your penalty for extra shots is the the time it takes to shoot them and even worse, if you need to do a standing reload!

Stop thinking about doing it and just go do it. There will be many shooters there willing to help you out and walk you through the match. Just let them know this is your first match and you will receive plenty if help. :)

ArchAngel, I am going to a local 3 gun meet in January, I am excited. i took the opportunity recently to buy a new shotgun because I wanted one and I can use it in 3 gun type matches.

I'm sure you are going to have a great time. (new addiction warning lol)

It would be exceedingly rare to find a 3-gun match that did anything Virginia Count.

You are going to have a blast, let us know how the match goes. What kind of shotgun did you get?

I got a Mossberg 930 JM model, it is such a fun shotgun to shoot for sure

I had a great time, I won the long range stage using my bolt gun, finished the other stages 15th of better out of 47 shooters. I struggled with the time on shotgun stages because I don’t have the speed loafers but it was a great time

I will be going back in a few weeks

One of the issues with 3gun in general is that there is not really one recognized sanctioning body, and therefore the rules seem to be very fragmented and "tribal". Unless the match directors of the match you are planning to attend pointed to a specific rule set they intend to use, I would not automatically assume anything about the rules you will see on the day of the match.
