642 Club Part Three

I'm sure it's been covered 1000+ times in various threads on thr, but does anyone have any strong recommendations for front sight paint? (Does anyone suggest anything better or more durable than finger nail polish?) This will be the most likely first "upgrade" to my 442...
Nail polish or Testor''s model paint is about as good as it gets.

I did mine with nail polish and a coat of clear polish on top. It has lasted about a year so far.

Hi guys,

Been browsing all three parts the club has to offer and I have a couple questions. Thinking about picking up a 442/642 but also thinking about the Ruger LCR. Wondering what made you pick the smith over the ruger.

Thanks!

For me, it was largely about the plastic... I already have a couple ccw polymer Rugers (LC9 & SR9c) I'm just not 100% sold on a plastic revolver. If I'm going to carry a 5 shot snubbie, it's going to be a S&W

Do a lot of you guys shoot cast boolits through yours? I was just wondering, because both of mine have too small (right around .357") throats for the .358" sized boolits I load. As with my other handguns to be used with cast boolits, they will be shipped off to DougGuy soon! I have witnessed his reaming\honing improve group sizes in my 629 and 686 already.

The LCR seems to be slightly larger in every dimension than the j-frames. Since I typically pocket carry my revolvers that was a big deal to me. The Ruger’s trigger is pretty sweet though, and if I felt the need to have a .357 snubbie I’d look hard at the LCP for the trigger and it’s price. But I'd probably opt for a SP101, I just prefer metal framed guns regardless of if it's a revolver or semi-auto.

Here's my new-to-me 442. I've been using a 337 for awhile but a 442 has been on my wish list since it's low snag. And the recoil of the 442 is noticeably less to practice with. I just need some to either do a lot of dry firing or some polish work as the 337 has a much smoother trigger.

Hi All,

New to the forum - happy to be here. I've read though the entirety of the three parts of the club a few times over - needless to say, the bug has bit me.

After carrying a Glock 19 daily for the past year and a half or so, I picked up a NIB 642-2 for those times when I don't feel like concealing a combat pistol (which seems to be more and more often). When people ask me about the 642, I find myself saying you just "forget it's there." It's a joy to carry, and with regular practice I'm becoming more comfortable with >10 yd shooting. Truly a piece that reflects the skill of the shooter.

I'm currently carrying in a DeSantis Nemesis pocket holster ("currently" as in it's in my right front jeans pocket as I type this from the couch). I ordered a Mika round-cut which should be here in a few weeks, an event which I am very much looking forward to.

Here's a picture of my baby, alongside my "woodland gun," a 4" S&W 686+.

Cheers,
Leif

Guys, I find the 642 to be most comfortable in a deep coat pocket and to be used at arms length, like at an ATM or similar situation, although it is capable of much more.

If you want to shoot it at the range, use 148 grain wad cutters, less uncomfortable. But load it with +p's for defense. I guarantee you won't remember the recoil after the incident.

IMG_0924.JPG Here are my 442s. One is always in my pocket. The other shares AIWB duty with a couple other Snubs I have. The 442s get the most carry time.

Thanks, there is just something about the 442 that dose it for me. I like most all the no-lock J-Frames. I shoot them all but the 442s are the Favorite. DAO is not a problem and I can shoot it about as well as single action.

For me it was the ease of pulling it out of my pocket, I thought the trigger was a little better on the Ruger. It seemed to have a lesser profile looking down at my pocket. Its me EDC, in a bulldog pocket holster.
I figured when TSHTF my adrenaline will trump any trigger pull difference.
I can point shoot it pretty good, and that's the way I train with it.

Just browsing my old photos and found this one y'all might enjoy

Chronograph readings from a 442 and a 340 M&P

Gold Dot Short Barrel .38 +P 135 grain shot out of both

Buffalo Bore .38 special hard cast wadcutter 150 grain shot out of both

And one BB 140 grain .357 mag short barrel round shot out of the M&P

Them circles mean outliers... stars mean big outliers... Most of the shots are in the purple bars and lines

You can see the gold dots had a pretty wide range and were getting a might slow out of the 340.

Really enjoying the 150 hardcast flat headed wadcutters. Not quite a pleasure to shoot but i'm accurate with them and they are consistent. I expect penetration to be favored with that round.

I had posted a table of the same results about a page ago. I guess at some point in my life I worked it up graphically.

To the gentleman above asking about J frames vs LCR: the J's are infinitely more pocketable!

Nice guns! Can't say the same for the bottles of sweetened rice water behind them, though! :)

I know it's not a 642, but this is my recently acquired 337PD. It was one of those "I don't need to have, but I got to have" purchases... unfortunately no box or papers, but in very good condition. fullsizeoutput_62a7.jpeg

Going through my first of probably two holster replacements for the year. The gun has been through 7 years and two frames of carry/use. Shoots well and is easy to carry as always.

I just bought an M&P 340 (No Lock) as an EDC but I'll continue to use the 442 for carry while jogging/working out.
