I had a Glock 23 in .40 and sold it to buy a P320 in 9mm a few months ago. Since then, I've kept looking at all this .40 ammo still on my shelf with no gun to use it in. I'm also not convinced .40 is going out of favor as much as my gun shop thinks. But that may be to my advantage.

He has a nice P229 on the shelf he has dropped the price on. (He's dropped the price on a few of his .40's as they aren't moving). Anyone have any problems with theirs? I would probably use it as a range and bedside gun because it's heavier than my P320 or my Shield. But it would eat up my ammo setting there gathering dust.

Whadayathink?

I had a p229 in 40/357 sig and it was great. Just a little heavy and chunky for what I needed it for back then. The p229 is one of the best 40/357 sig caliber compact handguns available and I see myself picking up another if I run into one that has the price just right. You can probably purchase a 357 sig barrel for it for around $150 and enjoy both calibers. I shot a lot of 40 out of mine but carried it with the 357 sig barrel. Never a hiccup through a couple thousand rounds combine both calibers. Go for it

I've looked at the .40 P320 conversion kit and as far as a barrel swap, I've been told the .40 barrel won't fit in the 9mm slide, only the .357 Sig slide. This 229 is close to the $400.00 mark and isn't much more costly than a conversion kit.

I have a P229R in 9mm. as my primary home defense gun. Got it used but like new in it's case along with night sights and three spare magazines. I also have a SIG STL-900L laser/light module to go on it. I bought it pretty much for this role after shooting a P228 (and a P226 before that), for years and being duly impressed by their build quality, accuracy, reliability, durability, and the fact that it fed everything I could load into the magazines (the P228 also served as my reloading test gun).

I would most definitely buy another one in .40 caliber for $400 if it was available at that price.

P229 for $400 I would be taking a hard look at it , I have spent a good amount of time with a P229r DAK I felt it is a fantastic weapon , at $400 any P229 or P226 would be a heck of a deal , I am not that lucky to stumble across one at that price

I don't have a Sig Sauer, in my collection. That my change someday. Nice looking Sig Sauer P229 you have bannockburn.

I've always believed that both the SIG P-226 and the 229 were the perfect platforms for the .40 S&W. As an aside, Beretta's offering (the 96) ain't bad, either.

Sounds like a good deal! Thanks to a friend of mine behind the counter at the LGS, I got my P229 with the spare mags and all for $499. That was probably half the retail price of the gun if it were brand new.

Thanks! I had gone to the LGS looking for a 9mm. with a rail for a home defense gun. Was perusing the new gun case when my old buddy who worked part time behind the counter came over and said he could have something in the used gun case that might interest me more than a new Glock or XD; man was he ever right! The SIG was like brand new, didn't even appear to have been fired, at least nothing beyond a test firing at the factory perhaps. That and the E2 grips, SRT, night sights, and spare mags, at that price, sealed the deal! A great gun at a great price!

I have two P229s chambered in .40 S&W/357 SIG. I agree that it is the best pistol for that caliber, at least of the .40s I have yet shot. You might want to consider the SIG short reset trigger kit if it does not already have one.

I have a P229 in 40/357. It’s been great. It manages the recoil better than any of my other 40’s (FNS, Glock 23 and 27 and P320). It’s never malfunctioned, and after a trigger job my a local gun smith it has one of the better SA/DA triggers out of the guns I own. For $439 I’d buy it.

In a thin Kydex IWB holster, the P229 is much easier to conceal than a Glock. I carried one in .40S&W in California for more than a decade. Concealed well, nary a liberal fainted.

That's a really good deal. I looked at one for $450 a few months back, with polished slide and wood grips. I was tempted, but was trying to keep to a budget, so I handed it back to the clerk. Before the clerk could put it away, a guy came up and said, "Yeah, that's the one I came in to see." It left the store with him.

It's interesting how different people can have different experiences with the same guns. I find my P229 harder to conceal than a G23. I think it's the width of the grip that really causes me issues (Hogue micarta).

I do prefer the P229 overall though. Despite the extra carry weight.

So, before taxes I'm looking at around 439.00.

I have a P226 in .40S&W, my only .40, so suffice it to say that it’s not my favorite caliber. But I like mine and I wouldn’t hesitate to go for a P229 in that caliber at that price!

I found the DeSantis E-GAT Slide holster to be very capable in comfortably holding the gun snug by my side while giving doing a great job in providing concealment.

The Sig 229 is my favorite compact gun. I have one in 357 Sig and 40 S&W. I don’t think you can go wrong at that price point!

The block at the rear of the slide on Glocks sticks out on me no matter how I adjust the holster. But, with a Comp-TAC holster, I could adjust the cant to keep the Sig grip from bulging. But, we all have different body builds.

The Sig P229 certainly shines in shot precision and quality.

The P229 was designed around the .40 unlike the Glock and many other guns. It handles .40 recoil really well and is a proven world-class service pistol. You really can't beat it for the price you're looking at. I have an SP2022 which is similar in size to the P229 and despite being a lighter polymer frame the recoil almost feels like a 9mm. SIG knocks it out of the park with their P-series pistols. I also have a West German P226 that I picked up for $400 and almost 20k rounds later I have yet to have a malfunction.
