Hi,

This April I'm crossing the Atlantic to go to a wedding in the san francisco/yosemite area. My fiancee and I will stay in California for about a week. I realize that CA might be almost as firearm unfriendly as my home country, but I'd love to spend some time at a rental range.

Do you know of a good place? I'd love to get to shoot a bunch of stuff at my own pace.

I have owned firearms since I was old enough to, although I haven't shot many "black rifles".

Wrong place to be looking to do that, esp. "black rifles". You may want to head to Vegas for such an experience.

If you can make it to Vegas i cannot recommend Battlefield Vegas enough. They have all kinds of rentals from handguns to machine guns and the staff is really good. The owner posts on ar15.com and has an ongoing thread about what components/parts fail and what type of round counts they see from different platforms that has been a great resource to the shooting community. https://www.battlefieldvegas.com/

The OP is going to San Francisco, which is much closer to Reno. It is actually feasible to drive from SF to Reno and back in one day. Any good ranges in Reno?

San Fran doesn't even have a gun shop left, they ran it out a year or so ago. When I was stationed out there in the late 80s I found no ranges in or around the City. Cali is VERY firearms intolerant.

My life and travel partner won't be so keen on driving to Reno, Nevada. Unless of course, perhaps it is also the pottery and handicraft capital of North America.

Not sure about that area, but if there are any Native American reservations along the way there's likely places to buy their pottery and other products.

I'm in Sacramento which has a surprising number of ranges. Urban and coastal California is gun unfriendly and they have the numbers so they call the shots, but most of the state's land area is farm country and the residents there are very pro gun. I thought I knew what redneck was having grown up in the rural northeast, but the rednecks I knew back home are high society compared to California rednecks. California is, in reality, 2-3 states forced to be one.

Back to the point: In SF itself, if you so much think about a gun, you'll be arrested. It's a great place in small doses for food and entertainment, but not for anything gun. I'm sure there are ranges in the outer bay area, but that's not my neck of the woods so I can't provide details. I know there are places in Sacramento that rent guns. I'm not sure what the latest round of "assault weapons" laws have done to rental places, but you should at the least be able to try out some semi-auto pistols and CA legal semi auto rifles (think mini-14). I know the place some friends and I went to shoot a little trap last weekend has .50 BMG rifle people can try if they want to spend about $10/round.

Bottom line, there are a lot of options for shooting in nor-cal once you're out of the infuriating an hypocritical microcosm that is SF, but if you want to try out military grade hardware, you'll have to go to Nevada.

Try Yelp - some came up that rent guns in the SF area. Years ago, there was one south of town that was decent. No idea what its name was.

I know of four ranges within about 50 miles of central San Francisco that rent guns:

As far as I know all of them have a police of not renting a gun to only one person. Someone wanting to rent a gun must have another person within him. Rental ranges usually have such policies because there have been a number of suicides at rental ranges with rented guns.

There might, however, be a complication. You wrote:

Please be advised that under federal law a nonimmigrant foreign national is prohibited from possessing a gun or ammunition, and that would include handling a gun, unless he (1) has a hunting license from a State in the U. S.; or (2) is visiting the U. S. under the Visa Waiver Program. (There are a few other exceptions that very seldom apply (see 18 USC 922(y)).)

Some ranges seem to ignore this law, and it appears that violations are very seldom be prosecuted. But that didn't help these fellows from Saudi Arabia.

However, visitors from most European countries here for less than 90 days are probably covered under the Visa Waiver Program.

I might be visiting Vegas later this year and I was thinking of doing the same as Axxel. I'm also from the other side of the big pond. Are all the ranges in Vegas 'loose' with that stuff or do you recommend some specifically?

I was just there. Sadly, your choices are small. Jackson Arms in South San Francisco rents guns. Their pricing is not for the weak. I rented a Nighthawk GRP Recon for $30, paid $29 per 50 round box and $2 for hearing protection. You cannot rent a gun from them and have your own lane—so go with someone. Jackson Arms is dirty and nasty. I do not recommend it unless you are desperate.

San Leandro has a range but they do not rent. A range in Richmond also does not rent. Circle S in Marin does not rent either.

You could try Sacramento Valley. It is supposed to be very nice.

So how about Reno, Nevada? I'm sure the missus and I could find something to eat along the way through Sacramento and someplace to sleep in Reno before we head back to California.

SF/Yosemite is a pretty large area.

You may want to post your inquiries regarding guns and rental ranges here in the appropriate forum. Perhaps in the General Discussion area:

I hope you enjoy your stay. Oh yeah, regarding Yosemite. April is around the beginning of the season, but you may want to make arrangements and plan if you're going to visit the park. Yosemite is NOT a place where you decide to visit on a whim. If you do, you'll be sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic all day (this may be the case, regardless).

Going to bed before an early morning flight!

Thank you all for your advice on various topics. Regarding the legal pointer from mr. Ettin, I've googled this Visa Waiver thing, and my home country is a part of it, so we'll be fine. I think our hosts are planning on some kind of great outdoors daytrips in the yosemite area, but I don't know if we'll go into the actual national park. Finally, regarding the shooting, we'll be driving our cheap rental car to Reno to check it out and try to do some shooting. Hopefully, we'll find a nice airbnb around Lake Tahoe.
