Rental range san Francisco area

Wrong place to be looking to do that, esp. "black rifles". You may want to head to Vegas for such an experience.

If you can make it to Vegas i cannot recommend Battlefield Vegas enough. They have all kinds of rentals from handguns to machine guns and the staff is really good. The owner posts on ar15.com and has an ongoing thread about what components/parts fail and what type of round counts they see from different platforms that has been a great resource to the shooting community. https://www.battlefieldvegas.com/

The OP is going to San Francisco, which is much closer to Reno. It is actually feasible to drive from SF to Reno and back in one day. Any good ranges in Reno?

San Fran doesn't even have a gun shop left, they ran it out a year or so ago. When I was stationed out there in the late 80s I found no ranges in or around the City. Cali is VERY firearms intolerant.

Not sure about that area, but if there are any Native American reservations along the way there's likely places to buy their pottery and other products.

I'm in Sacramento which has a surprising number of ranges. Urban and coastal California is gun unfriendly and they have the numbers so they call the shots, but most of the state's land area is farm country and the residents there are very pro gun. I thought I knew what redneck was having grown up in the rural northeast, but the rednecks I knew back home are high society compared to California rednecks. California is, in reality, 2-3 states forced to be one.

Back to the point: In SF itself, if you so much think about a gun, you'll be arrested. It's a great place in small doses for food and entertainment, but not for anything gun. I'm sure there are ranges in the outer bay area, but that's not my neck of the woods so I can't provide details. I know there are places in Sacramento that rent guns. I'm not sure what the latest round of "assault weapons" laws have done to rental places, but you should at the least be able to try out some semi-auto pistols and CA legal semi auto rifles (think mini-14). I know the place some friends and I went to shoot a little trap last weekend has .50 BMG rifle people can try if they want to spend about $10/round.

Bottom line, there are a lot of options for shooting in nor-cal once you're out of the infuriating an hypocritical microcosm that is SF, but if you want to try out military grade hardware, you'll have to go to Nevada.

Try Yelp - some came up that rent guns in the SF area. Years ago, there was one south of town that was decent. No idea what its name was.

I might be visiting Vegas later this year and I was thinking of doing the same as Axxel. I'm also from the other side of the big pond. Are all the ranges in Vegas 'loose' with that stuff or do you recommend some specifically?

I was just there. Sadly, your choices are small. Jackson Arms in South San Francisco rents guns. Their pricing is not for the weak. I rented a Nighthawk GRP Recon for $30, paid $29 per 50 round box and $2 for hearing protection. You cannot rent a gun from them and have your own lane—so go with someone. Jackson Arms is dirty and nasty. I do not recommend it unless you are desperate.

San Leandro has a range but they do not rent. A range in Richmond also does not rent. Circle S in Marin does not rent either.

You could try Sacramento Valley. It is supposed to be very nice.

SF/Yosemite is a pretty large area.

I hope you enjoy your stay. Oh yeah, regarding Yosemite. April is around the beginning of the season, but you may want to make arrangements and plan if you're going to visit the park. Yosemite is NOT a place where you decide to visit on a whim. If you do, you'll be sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic all day (this may be the case, regardless).
