I was looking at Leupold scopes on their website yesterday and checking out their full range. When I went back today, there is new line called VX-Freedom and the VX-2 no longer shows up on their product list. You can find the VX-2 if you search for it, but it is not on the list of scopes.

Is the VX-Freedom supposed to replace the VX-2? Prices are significantly lower than the VX-2. Any info on what level of quality to expect?

Though they aren’t going to admit it Leupold has been streamlining their product line for a couple of years. It looks like they are replacing the VX-1 and VX-2 with the Freedom line. I’d be willing to bet the Freedom has VX-2 glass, not VX-1.

Interesting. I have been very pleased with the glass on my VX-2. Hopefully this new line is on par.

Send Leupold an inquiry through their contact form ,the respond very fast:thumbup::thumbup:

Someone on another forum where I'm a member did just that and reported that the glass is the same as the VX-2 but with fewer reticle options. The internals are different. Don't know if that is good or bad.

Based on the price it looks to be an upgraded VX-1 since it is in the same price range. Just like when they went from Vx-II to VX-2 which got VX-III glass this is probably the VX-1 with VX-2 glass. Both the VX-1 and VX-2 series of scopes are shown to be discontinued on the website so this would make sense I just hope they will be releasing a new upgraded VX-2 line also as that had a nice balance of price and quality.

I’d bet money the Freedom is a VX-2 in quality and for all practical purposes Leupold eliminated the VX-1 line.

It seems like the scope market has gotten very competitive the past few years and Leupold is responding by pushing higher quality glass into lower price points. It does seem likely that the Freedom line is a compression of the VX-2 and VX-1 into one line with VX-2 glass but more cost-effective production (lower cost internals, fewer reticles, etc.) to bring the price down to VX-1 levels. This seems like a good thing to me. Leupold certainly should benefit from economies of scale by reducing the different lines of rifle scopes. It appears they still have at least 16 different rifle scope lines.

Off the top of my head I have 10 Leupold scopes. NONE of them track correctly. In chatting with other people on line, it is rare to have a Leupold track well. I hope they did improve the internals.

I have 31 leupold scopes and the scopes track well enough for me, and if they don,t I can send ALL of them back to have them fixed or repaired for free. are you sure you don,t have Chinese knock? off,s. seems the US snipers like the leupold scopes and they must track ok. eastbank.

I contacted Leupold directly and the response I received was "The VX-2 series of riflescopes were discontinued and replaced by the new VX-Freedom line of scopes. The VX-Freedom line includes improved glass coatings and more tactile adjustments in addition to new reticle options."

That’s what I’ve been saying for awhile, but it’s arguing with people with less diversity in scopes who are just leupold fan clubs

“They” don’t, the mk4 got dumped awhile ago...because they weren’t that good. Simple as that. “US snipers” are using Schmidt and Bender or premier, which is Schmidt and bender..they have for awhile as well. Although We still use the tmr mil reticle spotters..that works fine enough.
The way around it was using trued dope as that was before knowledge of a tall target test

Regardless of whether components have been upgraded or downgraded, the name has for sure been downgraded. Vx freedom, blegh.

I checked over the VX Freedom at the SHOT show like others did. I personally own 43 RFP/2nd FP Leupold scopes, almost all except rim-fires with calibrated CDS dials, and mostly VX3i, VX-3i LRP, Mark 4, Mark AR, and several VX3. I have ordered 2 VX-5HD 3-15x44mm for two 6.5 Creedmoor rifles. Since I use Leupold and Nikon laser range finders, Swarovski 10x40 Range binoculars, and "come-up" for long range shooting (mule deer, black tail deer, whitetail deer, black bear, elk, antelope, ground squirrels, prairie dogs, rock chucks) I have never noticed a tracking issue with any of these scopes. Obviously with a FFP scope and mil-dot or TMR reticle then tracking might become a serious issue and understandably could be a serious concern for our military snipers. However, out past 1,000 yards with my 6.5mm CM, 6mm CM, 6mm Norma BR, 6.5-284, and .300 Wby my Leupolds are working very well. I think that choosing the right scope for the right job (hunting, 3-gun matches with ARs, law enforcement sniper suppression, military sniping, etc.) most likely should determine what brand and model scope one should purchase. Lots of good comments above for sure.
