Hello all. :)

I would like you to rate and comment on my home defense pistol build. It is a Beretta 92A1 with several modification that I believe tailor it to the job:

20180115_152331-1.jpg

It started as a base 92A1 and here are the upgrades I did to it:

1. Installed all metal parts (factory Beretta)
2. Installed G-Series decocker kit (no more accidental safety engagements)
3. Added factory D-spring (lighter DA first pull but still reliable)
4. Streamlight TLR-1 HL weapons light
5. Added Trijicon night sights
6. VZ tactical slant grips (much better traction over factory grips)
7. Mec-Gar 18 round magazines (recommended by industry experts)
8. Speer Gold Dot 124 grain standard pressure ammo (tested 300 rounds, perfect reliability)

This is a fairly big and heavy gun as we all know. I went into it knowing that and consider it a bonus for dedicated home defense as it reduces muzzle flip for better follow up shots. With the added weight and weapons light, this is the smoothest and least recoiling 9mm handgun I have ever fired. It is also super reliable so far and I've tested 300 rounds of Speer Gold Dots in it that I keep for home defense, 0 failures at all so far.

What do you all think of the gun? Is there anything I should do to improve it? Do you think it would be an effective dedicated nightstand gun? I also have a Remington 870 Police but I keep this gun on my nightstand in case I don't have time to grab the shotgun.

Thoughts? Please rate my home defense handgun!

I was gonna suggests the steel upgrades, but it looks like you've got that covered- I had to track down all the bits individually, but I see Beretta is offering it as a kit again.
A fine gun, perfect for your application. Im not a big fan of pistol mounted lights, but thats a preference issue.
The only reason my 92FS doesn't see HD duty is because its a tad too big to fit in my nightstand safe- hence my 6904 Smith gets the nod lately. Never had any malfunction of any sort with either of these two pistols.
I say rock on bro- job well done.

Sounds like a well thought out and decently modified pistol for home defense. I went a similar route with a SIG P229R with night sights, the short reset trigger, and a SIG STL-900L laser/light module. Wouldn't feel at a disadvantage with either pistol set up that way.

Sweet tacticool gat bro.

Seriously, it's a nice looking set up. I'm not personally a fan of DA/SA or mounted lights but if it works for you that's all that really matters.

Not sure why you need us to justify your set up if it works and your confident/competent with it. It's obviously quality gear so I guess I'm just lost...

I think it’s all relative to you personally. Right now I have 4 guns in arms reach of my bed. A 10mm 1911, an XD-45, S&W Model 20, Ruger Redhawk 44mag. Along with a flashlight that I take coon hunting. I would argue that 1 of the 4 is NOT a good HD/SD gun (Ruger). But I’m proficient in each and have complete faith in each. I just happen to keep them by my bed.

If you like the gun, trust the gun, are proficient with the gun, I rate the gun a 10/10 or an A+. And if you run out of ammo, I rate it a 10/10 as a club also. But if you have to throw it at the BG, throw it by the grip, not the barrel. Those front sights are sharp.

That’s a fine choice, and well-tuned to your needs/wants. Especially appreciable to me is #2. Never did like that safety’s location on the M9.

If I were to make a Beretta HD gun... it would have the exact modifications as yours. Maybe not the grips as I am a fan of the black plastic (maybe some novelty pearls for extra intimidation).

Good choice on the Morakniv as well. Love those knives so much!!

I don't care for the M9, but you did well by adding the light. sights. and decocker. If you're comfortable with it, then its good.

I have ultimate trust in the Beretta 92FS platform. Trijicon is top o' the line. Streamlight's TLR-1 HL is one of the two best weaponlights made. VZ grips -- superb. Good choices all. As far as I'm concerned, the Beretta 92, the SIG P-226 and the CZ-75 are the penultimate choices as far as 9mm pistols go, so I totally support your choice for an HD weapon.

Mec-Gar mags are awesome, best there are ... only thing I'd add is the +2 20-rounder (since concealment isn't an issue for an HD weapon).

You know I have a few of those, but have heard reports of the plastic +2 baseplate sheering off when dropped. Doesn't give me that warm and fuzzies. The 18 rounders give me a bit more confidence should they get banged in a scuffle etc.

Not to sound snarky but why do you care what we think of your choice as a HD gun? If you like it, shoot it well and it's reliable who cares what we think? If you have compete confidence in that handgun it's the best choice for you.

I use a short barrel 12ga shotgun loaded with #4 Buckshot.

Because this is a gun forum and I'm just trying to get some feedback on my setup. That's all.

I used to carry a Taurus PT92. It was OK; I moved to the 1911 a few years back.

I've been considering a setup much like yours for home defense; it would be built on a Beretta or Taurus. The differences would be the use of a 20rnd magazine, and addition of a 6" barrel.

The pistol would be built around the CorBon Casino load (90grn @ 1500fps).

Regards,

Josh

The gun in first pick looks as good as them Wilson Combat ones that cost around $1000 when fond second-hand in "NIB" condition. One thing makes me sad is that Swedes can make knifes like that send them across the Atlantic and offer for about $15. Why can't we do the same right here instead of getting so much crap from China?
