Looking for some recommendations for a rear bag for bench and prone shooting with either a rest or a bipod up front. Right around $100 max, doesnt need to be a Cadillac, just needs to be functional. Amazon and Midway are my primary suspects for sourcing.

I just use the Caldwell one. But I don’t really ever shoot on a bench or something that’s not a earth surface or barricade.
That being said, on the side, for field use maybe consider making a bean bag or a sock tied off with media in it to use as a light weight squeeze bag if you ever decide to go that route with shoot if the need arises.

Yup, I have a bean bag made from a pair of black pantyhose with a pound of small beans in it. Works really well for just general stuff.
Looking to get a little more specific for load accuracy testing so I can get more repeatable results. Something like a Protector bag.

I have a couple of Caldwell's. They are better than nothing, but not really that great.
I prefer Protektor bags. I have 3 of them. They start at about 40 bucks and go up. I have a bunny ear and a rabbit ear. I recommend the hard base. Those bags are 40'ish. I also have one of their higher end benchrest bags. It was about $140.

Yeah, I looked at some of the Protectors for around $40. How tall is your bag, and does it work when shooting prone? Not going out to shoot F class or anything, just kind of a mid range all arounder

My bags aren't with me now or I would measure them. Protektor has the measurements on their site...it sounds like either the rabbit or bunny would work for you...same bag, just different ears. Protecktor sells them on eBay with free shipping. Sometimes, you can find blemished bags for a few bucks less.
Any advise on the short or long ears? And what did you fill yours with? Id like to be on the heavy side, maybe lead shot in the base.

I actually did put lead shot in the base of one. It doesn't work well. The lead tends to roll instead of pack.
If you want it heavy, I recommend ordering one with "heavy" sand....Yes, heavy sand is a thing. There is a noticeable difference in one filled with heavy sand compared to one filled with playground sand.

Edgewood bags for fixed position shooting. I like a 4-5" diameter squeeze "tube" for mobile use.

I know what heavy chromite or zircon sand is, just need to get it. Do you think that packing the with a combo of lead shot and heavy sand would be feasible? I know thats not F-class legal though. Not that I plan on shooting F-class at anytime.

I wouldn't bother with the lead and sand idea. The lead would probably just work it's way to the bottom over time and make the bag feel like it was rolling. Heavy sand in the bottom is all you need.

Shot bags with sand will keep you well under budget and work just fine.
Yup, I can see how that would happen. Particles of the same size tend to group with each other.

Depends on what you are doing...I shoot my rimfire benchrest guns free recoil. I need the ears to hold the rifle.
Whats the rod with the little rubber nub pointing up?

Just a stop that contacts the front of the stock (low enough it won’t contact the barrel), so when the rifle recoils to the rear I can push it forward to the same spot it was when I fired it last, eliminating another variable.
Not needed with the saddle, only used with the bag.

I like the bunny ears. Most of my shooting is prairie dogs from a bench so I'm always sliding the rifle in the rear bag for slightly different elevations, The short ears don't get in the way of cheek weld or my right hand. I always have a couple of shot bags filled with sand. They are handy under the protector bag or under your elbow. I've only worn out one protector in over 40 years so they are pretty durable if you keep them clean and oiled.

Exactly what I use as well. Filled with anything from used primers to small legumes or whatever is handy, cheap, durable and easy to make.
