I've always loved convertible revolvers, but haven't been able to purchase one yet. What is your preference and what calibers?

I've got two Ruger convertibles, actually three. I have two Blackhawks in .45 Colt caliber with ACP cylinder, one 7 1/2" barrel and the other 4 5/8" barrel. The cylinder for the 4 5/8" gun also fits my .45 Caliber Vaquero thus making it a convertible of sorts.

I have used the ACP cylinder for the .45 Xtra Short cartridges, but no real used other than the novelty. At one time I had a plentiful supply of ACP brass but that has long ago been scrapped. As more and more .45 Colt cases wear out my ACP cylinder might find more use, as these cases become my Xtra Short.

The only convertible I have is a Ruger Single Six .22LR/.22WMR and mostly use it for .22 WMR.

I know a .38 Special/.357 Magnum revolver isn't a convertible, but it feels like it to me since I know the wide range of ammo it can consume.

I used to have a Single Six 22lr/22magnum. I don't know that the magnum cylinder was really that useful.

I currently have a Blackhawk 45colt/45acp. I shoot 45colt sometimes, but usually it's 45acp because my FiL reloads it for us. :)

A Blackhawk in 9mm, 357/38, and .357-44 B&D is my favorite single action Convertible currently. I'm finishing up a modified trigger guard for a Convertible Redhawk in 357/38 and 357-44 B&D as well. It's technically a convertible now, but the long term plan is for it to be a fast change convertible - I'm nearly complete...

22 mag cylinder is useful if you hunt or trap. A buddy traps and normally carries a 22 lr revolver. Some critters need more, so he was using a 38 and tearing up hides.

I had a 4 5/8" Blackhawk 357/9mm convertible. Very cool gun and fun to shoot on the cheap with 9mm. Lots of folks say it isn't as accurate when using 9mm, which is likely true, but I'm not a good enough shot to notice. My dad really wanted it so I sold it to him. He's also not a good enough shot to notice. ;)

How come?
40sw loaded HOT was akin to 38spl fbi load, and 10mm loaded HOT will be similar to a .357. Why not just have the 357... plus moon clips are a pain, and the guns are usually overbuilt to a point they get too heavy. Think sp101...which lots of people love, but it's just not for me. Single action has enough barrel to amp things up but still essentially a fatter slower 357mag...at a premium because it's an oddball caliber for revolvers.

And I don't understand the point of conversion cylinder when 40 will work in 10mm anyway. A convertible should be truly that...give me a 32-20 gun with a 327fed conversion capable of shooting 32-20, 327 fed, 32 mag, 32 long, 32 sw, and 32 acp. Really spice it up with a 30 carbine cylinder and a 300BO cylinder. That's conversion...10/40 is nothing more than shooting 38 in 357 or 22 short in 22lr.

Should also come with .380 and 357sig (if there's meat for cylinder walls)

One of the few guns I'll never sell is my .45 Blackhawk. Shoots ACP and LC just as well as anything I can do as an average shooter.

Will do crazy hot 45LC all the way down to cheap steel $12/box 45ACP

I have a Single-Six and a Rough Rider with 22lr and 22 mag cylinders. I use mostly 22lr with them because of the cost for magnums. My favorite is an old Blackhawk, 7.5 inch barrel, with cylinders for 45 Colt and 45 acp. Very accurate with both rounds. I probably shoot more 45 acp through it than with my semi-autos.

At some point I want to get a Blackhawk for 357 with a 9mm cyinder. I've read that in spite of the different bullet diameters the 9mm is reasonably accurate. Good enough for plinking.

I'd love to see photos when you're done.

I have a Single Six and a Blackhawk 357/9mm convertible.

Nice idea to have on hand but my alternate cylinders never get used. 22 WMR is too expensive and since I reload, the 357 Magnum that I load/shoot is as cheap as 9x19.

Sounds like a peach. I was THIS close to getting one with 5.5" blued Ruger with ivory stocks. Even had the rig. Another gun came along... :(

I have a Single Six convertible, Blackhawk 357&9mm and a Blackhawk 45 convertible. I like the 357&9 best for the range of ammo that I can shoot.

I had a 5.5" single six for years. Shot tons of 22lr through it. Carried mags in it on my trap line. Angry bobcats and fisher cats make you want more than the 22lr. Wish I still had it. Traded it for a model 19 for trap line work.

I don't understand some of the hate I've seen for the Blackhawk 10mm/.40 since it was announced late last year.

Yes, it's not a common caliber for a single-action revolver. And yes, there is a fair amount of overlap in terms of performance when compared to other calibers. And yes, you can get other calibers in the same gun that are either more powerful, or softer shooting.

But at the end of the day, we're talking about a product improved version of an obsolete technology. There are other gun designs that have more capacity, less recoil, are easier to reload, with more efficient "standard" calibers, that are lighter, handier, more comfortable... And I could go on.

At the end of the day, we shoot revolvers because we want to. I want a 10/.40 Blackhawk, just because. And that's a perfectly legitimate reason. Sure, I could do the same thing with a .357 Mag. Actually, the majority of the guns I have chambered in .357 are not revolvers. Again, just because I can.

So for those who don't want a revolver in .40 or 10mm, don't get one. Problem solved.

:D

Freedom Arms .454 with spare 45acp cylinder. Beautiful and extremely accurate. Also nice in that you can go from hot and wild with the .454 to very mild with the acp.

357/44 B&D looks interesting but doesn't seem to be much interest/support for it out there now. Just did a little looking and didn't find much on it nor people doing the conversion now. Bit of a bummer. If anyone has leads please let me know.
