I shot some buffalo cowboy siloette at a semi local club to me with my Shiloh last year... I loved it- I will be getting some MVA sights for the Shiloh soon...

They also shoot cast bullet levergun and rimfire on the same range and have matches for that too... I have a marlin 39a I would like to use but can not figure what sights I need for easy adjustment n repeatability between distances etc

Any suggestions?

I have a Williams 5D on my 39. Same on my 357 and 44 1894s,

I shoot a Marlin 39A in silhouette matches and use a Williams receiver sight, model FP-39-TK. TK means target knobs. You want the target knob model so you can set your sight for the different silhouette distances. Trying to use Kentucky elevation and windage will not work well and you will miss targets. I also installed a Lyman globe front sight so I can choose what sight insert I need for the light conditions at the time of shooting. If you go that route you will want a longer elevation knob screw because the globe sight sits higher and the standard elevations screw will not be long enough to set the sight for the 100 meter rams. If you stay with the factory front sight the longer screw isn't necessary. You can get the sight and the long elevation screw from Brownells.
Long screw: Target Elevation Knob Long - 962-157-240WB
Lyman globe sight: Model 17AHB 539-017-360 WB which is the shortest height .404

I really enjoy shooting my 39a in silhouette and the Williams sight is very easy to adjust for the different distances.

I wonder if the combination of target knobs and globe sights would work geometrically on my 39 TDS. I have the Williams Receiver sight already. On the other hand, the little gun is aesthetically pleasing and the knobs and globe sight may be way out of proportion.

I've been very happy with my Skinner sights. In my opinion they are the most aesthetically pleasing sights for a Marlin lever action. However, they don't adjust quite as easily as they don't have hash marks or any sort of reference on the adjustments like a Williams.

The lines on the Williams sight aren't helpful as there are a number of clicks between the lines. You have to count the clicks from where the elevation bottoms out up to the different silhouette distances. I use a business card sized piece of paper to record how many clicks from the bottom for each of the 4 different silhouettes distances.

Get the williams fp with the target knobs. Or put a tang sight on it, but that will require drilling and tapping..
You might also consider the One Ragged Hole sight, if they're still made.

Well I ordered a top mount target knobbed Williams and a lyman globe sight today from brownell's I thank you guys for the support/information. I know the .22 looked fun but I also knew that the standard sights were not the way to go for that game. This may not be the permanent solution but it will be a good start :)

Thank you!

On another 39A that I owned had a Marbles tang sight which worked well but I had to send it back to Marbles to install a longer sight post. The globe was too high for the standard post and I couldn't even sight in for the turkeys. The problem with the tang sight is that it gets in the way of your right hand when shooting. I do like the look of the tang sight as it looks more cowboy than the receiver sight. The receiver sight or the tang sight are your only two options for smallbore cowboy lever gun silhouette.

It is a lot of fun but it can be quite humbling also. I don't know how may people have said that it won't be hard at all to hit those silhouettes, until they shoot their first match.

I agree with a tang sight being preferable but too tight... my marlin 1894 in 357 had one on here when I got her but my hands are too big... I also agree that it can be humbling! I did ok the first time out with my sharps and regualar hunting sights but will be upgrading for this year :) I have a second sharps I though about putting the 22 insert in but dang is she heavy... will want a low wall or something eventually :)

All I know is it is fun and the guys seem great- so far and I could think of a lot of worse ways to spend a half a day or a day :)
