Been looking for some myself. That's the only powder I will use in .256winmag and I have been going really easy on the supply I have had for a while now. At least it goes a long way in that tiny cartridge.

hot chili powder,
We have plenty of 2400(R), so there is no reason your local suppliers can't get it. I just verified with the plant yesterday that we have every product available currently.
If you really want 2400, and don't want to deal with mailorder and hazmat, perhaps ask your local retailer to order you some and contact you when it arrives. It may take a while, but is certainly in our supply line. Actually, I just checked the web page for Recob's in Prairie Du Sac, WI and they show 1/4/8lb sizes in stock.
I also really like 2400 for magnum pistol, so I understand your frustration about it not being on the shelf. It is fairly popular, but we have not had any problems making it available.
Shoot well,
Paul

I haven't looked in a few months in my area. Around here, any powder is slim pickings. But 2400 is one I need to stock up on. Maybe just have to buy an 8 lb. and be done with it.

I guess its where you live and how much people are buying (hoarding). I've been to all my sources where I buy powder and they just have it there on the shelf , don't even have to ask for it. To me it seems like there is plenty of 2400 out there.;)

Alliant 2400 pistol powder?

I don't buy from big stores, but it has been in the mom and pop ones near me. I have never tried it so it's just another one I pass over.

Used to be a couple of years ago when things were hard to find, I bought powder that I could use if I found it, big store ,LGS didn't matter, at least not to me. Discovered some great powders that I normally would have ignored. I would make a list of powders that I had load data for that would work for my applications and went shopping.

When I went to buy powder a few months ago I could not find 2400 at any online retailer with reasonable hazmat and shipping charges except in 8lbs. from Grafs. Not being ready to commit to that much of it I bought a few pounds of W296. 2400 was one of the few popular pistol powders that posed an availability challenge.

It's hard to get a local dealer to order some, as there aren't really any local dealers of reloading supplies in my area. The closest are a few LGS that have a few dusty pound bottles of obscure powders on the back shelf for $40+ and sales tax a pound. When it's overpriced to that degree you only have to buy 2 pounds from an online retailer for total cost including hazmat to win out.

To get what you want these days you have to put together an order for a years worth of powder / primers & order online . It helps to get some buddies or other guys from the range to jump in . Many times if you buy enough they'll waive hazmat fees & even ship for free . If I buy local primers are $39 / 1000 & powder is $ 30 -40 a lb. Now if I could find some Fed 100 SP primers I'd be happy .

Hazmat fees are a gold mine for somebody. These 'hazardous' materials aren't handled any differently than any other freight.

Got some primers the other day that I ordered. In the box were a couple papers that showed the box met the government requirements for a box used to ship HAZMAT.
(first time I had seen any of those, normally just the red label with the contents paper)
So part of it is to cover the cost keeping the government happy, permits, etc. (I do agree those little red labels must be expensive)
So there are extra requirements the shipper has to meet.

HAZMAT needs to go ground so it does have to be handled different.
I would also bet that the shipping company has to meet requirements to keep the government happy as well. No doubt keeping them happy costs $$
An extreme example but normally a truck gets loaded up with what ever, in general no laws about how many TVs, boxes of shoes etc can be in the truck.
(other than weight, not a truck driver so there are probably more things I am not aware of)
I would imagine they need to make sure for example not to many boxes of powder/primers go out on one delivery truck.

Hazmat fees are a pain, but considering I can get what I want shipped to my door not to terrible a price to pay.
I seem to recall someone mentioning at one point in time some other countries don't allow powder/primers to be shipped to individuals, I don't recall where the poster was from however.
A burger fries and a soda is about $8 any more so if I have to pay $30 to get the powder and primers I want delivered to my door it works for me.
I don't need to spend time calling to see if the LGS has what I want before driving there (may have to call a couple) and I don't spend time driving and burn up gas doing it, and maybe go to more than one place to "fill" my order.

During the last shortage I made a 120 mile round trip to a small town near me to get pistol powder. (none to be found online)
About 3 hours of my time, $15 worth of gas. It would have been cheaper to pay the HAZMAT + shipping if I could have found any powder to order online.

Most of the time you don't have to order very much to cover the HAZMAT fee
5K of primers or 5lbs of powder usually does it.

Yes it would be nice if there were no HAZMAT fees, but hey it would be nice if there was no income tax to,
We all have to do our part to help out our poor Uncle Sam.

Dudedog, I'm with you on that. I chased too many shops for a couple years only to walk away empty handed. I have no problem paying for haz-mat for a practically guarantee of powder/primers of my likings to my door.

Last fall I saw it on the shelf at Cabela's in Green Bay, WI.
Bought 3 lbs.
Still have 2lbs

I switched to IMR 4227 when 2400 dried up after sandy hook. It served me well as long as I stayed in the upper range. 4227 is not good for wussy loads.
2400 has returned to my NC area and I have some, but now use universal and unique almost exclusively for my 357 & 44 mag boolits. They will run 44 mag up to 1300 fps.

Strangely enough, any yahoo with a motor car can transport 25 pounds of smokeless powder with no special training or packaging requirements other than it be in the factory shipping container, which is the same packaging as when brought to our houses on the package delivery truck.

I'm not a heavy-duty user of powder, so I prefer to buy in 1 lb containers, if for no other reason than to avoid adding to the old powder I already have.

I also have three of the 'big box' sporting goods stores within 40 miles that I can buy powder, in 1 lb containers, at prices that are usually competitive with online prices and sometimes better during sales. And, I don't make a special trip for powder; I combine that trip with another necessary trip so the cost of car mileage expense is virtually nil.
