Has anyone on here used the Winchester deer season xp ammunition? Thinking about buying a box for my 30-06 and if it will group out of my rifle then I’ll use it this coming deer season.

It's been 40 years since I've bought ammo for hunting.....well, except for the 7.62x39, Wolf 154 SP. I've got a couple of rifles that have never fired a factory round.

But, I think you hit on it, ACCURACY. Whatever soft point ammo is accurate. .30-06 is way overkill for deer, so I don't know why you'd need something special to hunt deer with. Plain ol' Remington Core Lokt should do fine, so long as it's accurate. :D

I use it in my Remington 7600 carbine, 150 gr bullet. It shoots about a 1.25 inch group at a 100 yds for me in that rifle. You may want to avoid shooting any deer in the shoulder though, as the meat destruction may be pretty severe. I shoot mine just behind the shoulder only taking out ribs and lungs and the exit wound has always been rather large. I'd hate to see what it would do if it hit more solid bone.

Would a .308 be overkill for deer?

How large were the exit wounds? I shoot the deer in the lungs and sometimes the neck.

Size varies with what the bullet hits when it passes through. I've experienced exit wounds with this bullet that range from 1-3 inches in diameter without hitting any heavy bone.

Yeah, but it's popular and my fave deer rifle is a .308. I kinda LIKE overkill. :D I just think of the .308 as a .30-30 on steroids. :D I just point out the .30-06 will kill a deer without the high dollar magic bullets or fancy new latest and greatest and most up to datest ammo. It was doing it 55 years ago when I shot my first deer. It ain't broke, why do you wish to fix it?

Cuz unless you're getting a cns shot or using something with "weatherby magnum" or "creed" in the same sentence, you're just risking too much with such undergunned mentality. Put a win deer season xp in a .240 wby and you'll be conquering prairie dogs at 2+ miles and charging grizzly bears just by putting your finger inside the trigger guard. ;)

I tried some of those high dollar magic bullets one year. Shot a doe in the neck right under the deer`s nose. It blew a hole in the side of the neck so big you could stick both doubled up fists in the hole. There was nothing left in the neck and it took out 9 inch's of spine, just blew it all out.
The shot was at 50 yards and all I had was a head/neck shot. It I had had a board side shot it would have destroyed the other shoulder.

I went back to Remington Core-Lokt`s.

My wife used this in my .223 and hit a doe broadside. Punched through the right shoulder, through both chest walls (including ribs) and punctured the opposite side leg. Never found that bullet so I imagine it might have punctured the one side and fell out since it wasn't deep? I'm not quite sure what happened to it lol. This was at about 40-50 yards and the holes it left were quite impressive. Accurate in my rifle as well.

I am thinking ammo like this is for those shots between 75 yards , 200 yards and beyond. At closer ranges this kind of ammo is like a grenade.

I've had great luck in accuracy and bang-flops with the Win power points 100 grain 243 and 150 grain 308. I'm sticking with them, as they are not too expensive and available at wally world. Not fixing something that ain't broke.
