Hi Everyone,

I'm brand new to reloading and I am using a Forster Co-Ax with the Forster Seating Die (P/N: 004501). I am reloading Hornady 168gr AMAX with Varget and LC Brass. I am having two issues that I was hoping you all could help me with since I think I am doing something wrong for these things to happen and want to get it sorted.

1. Ring being left around the bullet about 1/2 inch down from the tip, from what I've read this seems to be normal but I just wanted to confirm with you all that this doesn't negatively impact the loads at all and if it doesn't then I will just carry on.

2. A scratch/line is being made in the bullets when I seat them, after I seat I can see the little shavings come off and remain on the bullet until I wipe them off and from the pictures you can see it's pretty consistent in terms of length and location on every round I've loaded so far. Any idea what could be using this?

Thanks in advance for your time

Did u clean the dies before u used them? The line on the top is from the seating stem not fitting the ogive of the bullet. So it leaves a mark. The bottom line I’m not sure, thinking maybe the seating die is dirty.

I've pulled these boolits and reseated them several times.

You can see the marks left ....am I'm worried about it?

Baja, The seating die has an area that crimps. This happens if you have the seating die set too low. The case can come into contact with the crimping area of the die before the bullet is fully seated.

The answer to fixing this is to raise the seating die and readjust for the bullet depth, using the bullet seating depth adjustment keeping the case away from the crimp area too soon. It should only takes a half to full turn of the seating die up higher.

That first line is definitely from the bullet seater like jojo said not matching the bullet ogive. I have had this happen, but not to that extenet, it actually looks like it might have deformed it a bit. The second one is a mystery. If it was me I would have that die checked or return it. Something is not right for sure.

have you chamfered the case mouths, for smoother insertion of the bullet ? Is your seater die a combo die? seats and crimps at the same time, ? doing that in 2 seperate ops all but eliminates brass shaving, and to some extent bullet nose rings.

What die set are you using, the ring around the bullet is more than likely caused by not having your seater/crimping die set correctly. That was my issue when I had it, with that said, it was for plinking 9mm ammo and really didn't affect the friability of the cartridge, just the aesthetics. (At least as far as I can tell).

You need to polish the sharp edge off the seater plug ... Take it out of the die and Chuck it in a drill ...take a piece of 600 grit and just break the sharp edge off the inside that touches the bullet ...
