Never know what you’re going to find

It’s a French Berthier rifle that the Turks cut down to a carbine. They were used by Turkish forestry agents . It is estimated that there were less then 5000 imported into the US.
This thread has kind of become the THR's version of the Never Ending Story.

Springfield Sporters still has a few parts for these along with some badly battered Turk stocks for those that need them.

Well, here was my weirdest firearm find. It was in a house I purchased in Northern California.

The dryer wasn't venting properly and I made a hook with a piece of wire to fish out, what I expected to be, lint balls. Instead, what I fished out was a lever action style, single shot, .22 rifle with the stock broken off.

I contacted the sheriffs department, they weren't too interested. I will look for it later and see if I can find it to take a picture, it was in pretty bad shape after spending an unknown number of years in a high humidity environment.

Your rifle is most likely an Ithaca 22 lever action model 49. I have two of them.

The only weapon I ever found was in the attic of the homeplace when I was a girl. I don't know the type or vintage but it had a round "lever" that dropped the breech for loading. My Dad said his grandfather put it away when they stopped making the 32 caliber rimfire cartridges for it. My uncle always said he was going to "refurbish" it to center fire but he ran out of time. It's a shame, it's really a pretty rifle in an old-timey sort of way.

When I got home today there was a box at my front door. It was tapped up with gray duct tape:confused:. Got me to wondering what it could be.

I was not expecting anything this week and I didn’t recognize the return address, it was from the land that time forgot. With no clue to what it could be, I opened it.
WOO HOO!! Cookies!!!:D

I had no idea who would send something so sweet. Then I saw the note. I didn’t see it at first, I was distracted by the cookies. :)
The box was from 460Shooter and his girlfriend. He blamed Hokie PHD for starting the cookie thing.
I sent 460Shooter a Zombie bag that I had posted on page 3, and the cookies where to say thanks.
Your very welcome. My son, Isaac, has already gotten into the chunky Chips Ahoy.
Thanks again.

Goodie goodie gumdrops! My "alerts" thingamajig said "GunnyUSMC attached a file to the thread"!

So naturally I clicked on the button... and got this picture....

Um... what is it? I looked it up, and found that it is a cool gun, but what historical significance? What mechanical ingenuity? And most of all... why do you have it, and why is it still new in box?

There’s a story behind it, but I’ll save that for another topic.:D

I had a maid for a while, she was a wild one. We did a lot of house cleaning, but the house never go better, but we had a lot of fun.;)

I have a bunch more Turkish ammo. I like shooting it. It’s about the hottest surplus 8 mm ammo you can find.
Now they do have some very hard primers and without a very good firing pin spring, you will get misfires.
I have a bunch of that smelly Turk ammo too... It was manufactured when El Aw-rens was still alive. The only thing I shoot it in is a Turk Mauser-like rifle. Smokey, dirty, and some neck splits.

And the rest of the ammo.
900 round case of Yugo 8mm Mauser.

1140 rounds of Romanian 8mm Mauser.

And a little bit more 7.62x54r.

I have an FN49 Egyptian model that will only run reliably on the Romanian 8mm ammo for whatever reason. Nice rifle but hard to find the ammo it likes.. Yes it's supposed to be adjustable gas system but a good bit of monkeying and trial and error... oy!

Hey Gunny, any chance one of your boxes full of surprises contains a cure for all the recent insanity amongst the gun loving community? How cool would that be?

Did you get the cat's permission to move his box. He will have to sit upon now, for sure.
The cat, Baley, is a she. Most of the pics indoors she is just out of frame. She follows me around more then the dog. That was her first look at the box. The damage to the box was done in shipping in the late 90’s.
I hadn’t looked at the rifle in almost ten years. Come to think of it, I don’t think any of my kids know that I have this rifle.
I’ve been under the weather the last few days, but will try to pull something else out of the crawls pace above the shop.

Glad you got them GunnyUSMC! I was laughing while closing the box up, and figured you would be surprised. I just hoped you didn't call the bomb squad to check it first.:D

This one has taken me a few days to make up my mind if I would open it or even post it.
To most it looks like an old watch box, but it’s much more then that.

Looking inside there is nothing of monetary value, just bits of junk from a time that haunts my dreams and will always feel like yesterday.

The ball bearing is from an Iraqi T64 tank that was destroyed during one of the few Iraqi counter in the Umm Gudair oil fields.
The rusted piece of metal next to it is shrapnel I picked up at the Al Jaber Air Base.
The Iraqi Dinar coins and dog tags were picked up on a forgotten battlefield.
The Iraqi eagle came from what was left of some poor soul.
The prayer beads. I traded a Kuwaiti Police Officer some Mardi Gras beads for them.
Years have passed since the last time I opened this box.
