Now that I'm a master squirrel hunter, I want advice on hearing protection. I decided to wear Peltor electronic muffs because I was tired of not being able to hear squirrels (or anything else) out in the woods.

Wondering what other people think. My loud (powder burning) weapons range from a .22 to a 16 gauge.

I never use ear protection with my .22. Never have since I was a kid. I'm not advising that it's a good idea to not wear it, it just has never bothered me. A shotgun would be a different story, even if it's a .410

Peltor is a good brand for conventional muffs, but I don't know about their electronic ones. I have a set of the Harry Leight electronic ones, and they are great, though will not accommodate a hat.

Peltor is a good choice. I use my Walker's Alpha muffs. Conserves my hearing and helps me hear in the woods.

For 22 or long barrel shotgun with light loads, I don't use them but I should. I tried peltors once deer hunting when they first came out. Squirrels and chipmunks drove me crazy.

I've been wearing Peltor Tac-7s while hunting for many years. There are newer models, but mine have worked great. If deer hunting, it's possible to adjust the volume down so that the squirrels don't sound any louder than they would if you were not wearing electronic muffs, of course. I am on the high side of middle aged and still have my hearing largely due to the Peltors. I'm a fan.

If you decide NOT to wear muffs when shooting a .22, check out CCI's "Quiet" ammo. You'll give up a few FPS, but they are noticeably quieter. Or the ultimate: hunt with a can (if legal in FL).

I use Peltors and others for shooting and hunting - I want to keep what remains of my hearing

I just bought a pair of the Walker Alpha electronic muffs and used them on a rabbit hunt. They are great for hunting (wind noise wasn't nearly as bad as I expected), but I would want to add plugs or switch to better muffs on the range, tried them shooting a couple mags through a pistol and they took the edge off but it was still pretty loud.

I've used Peltor Sport tac muffs for hunting and down the range for years. Its only when i shoot the moving target range with my rifle that has an adjustable comb that i use custom electronic ear plugs, because the sport tacs get in the way.
