ok guys need a little help with this I'm looking for a load that will shoot to point of aim In my Ruger sp101
so far I only had luck with 148gr DEWC I have been trying to get some 158gr bullets to work so
far not so good all the loads that I tried still shoot about 3" low so before I look for a different front sight or file it down any suggestions or do I need to switch to a 124gr bullet I have tried Bullseye / RedDot / Unique

Sounds like you are trying to shoot light target-type ammo...yes? Hitting low often means the bullet is either too light or going too fast being that the barrel will rise during recoil while the bullet is traversing it. Is your SP in 38 or 357?

Going to a lighter bullet will probably result in even lower impacts...at least that's the normal way of things. I'd try a series from very, very light to max with the 158's and chart the impact rise or fall which should give you a good idea of how to proceed. Maybe a 180 grain would go slow enough to stay in the barrel long enough to bring the impacts up?

With a 158gr bullet, start at 2.7gr Bullseye or 3.1gr HP38/231, and work up. It may even be necessary to go to an even heavier bullet.

Have you changed grips? A larger grip can lower the poi.

I shoot 6.2 gr unique under 158gr hard cast lnfp keith style bullets. I know thats not what you're looking for, but its what worked for me. It sure took a bunch of them for me to get the hang of shooting a snub. I finally figured out it was me, not the gun.
Best wishes.

Thanks I will give it a try and running stock grips

I shoot 158gr lead and trailboss alot and have not noticed any shooting low. I also have an SP101

158 Gr factory ammo hits POA in my SP101. I'd try some 180s to bring the POI up a bit if yours are consistently low.

well going to bump my load up just a little bit guys I'm looking for a light load that will shot to POA

I thought a heavier load, all else being equal, would cause the POI to be lower?
Heavier as in bullet weight? I've always heard, and always observed that heavier bullets tend to hit higher.

Or are you talking a heavier powder charge?

Sorry for not being clear, I was responding to the post above mine.

I took it to mean a heavier charge of powder...more velocity...and that was what my post was directed toward.

It has always been my experience that heavier bullets strike higher also

Heavier recoil, especially with lower velocity (Heavier bullet) tends to hit higher.

Luckydawg,
Im curious how your gun shoots with 158 gr factory ammo?
Does it hit poa, or is it low?

This poor zuke took one of the old 140 gr Silvertips that i still have in captivity.

Made a mistake on that critical defense a 125 grainftx 357
Shot to POA
They rate that round at 1500fps from a 8" barrel. I chronographed the Hornady 125gr. XTP 'American Gunner' load (also rated at 1500) and it averaged 1432fps from my 4" GP100. The only handloads I have in that speed range us W296... (21gr. start 22gr. max with 125XTP @1.59"). They run about the same speed as the Hornady at 21 and average 1485fps at 22 (again 4" GP).

That said, I don't see a big POI difference when I switch to the W296 158gr. XTP load (15gr. start 16.7max @1.58"). At max they do about 1240fps. The 125gr. load kicks harder but spends less time in the barret, making the POI pretty similar in my use.

It would be good to know what load the sights are regulated for. Ask Ruger.
