The people we should be reaching out to -- inner-city residents who want guns to protect themselves from the thugs in their midst -- probably don't even know about the 2nd Amendment, much less have an opinion about it.. Even the entire Constitution is not very relevant to them. They live their lives on a much more basic level. (What Oprah says is more to them than the Constitution.)

We can debate the meaning of the 2nd Amendment among ourselves, but such legalities are not persuasive to the fence-sitters.
Well, is Justin not exactly the sort of person we should be reaching out to when he says the 2nd Amendment is outdated and irrelevant? He seems like a thoughtful person with an open mind. I'm sure he has friends who likewise could be receptive to reason and he probably has a social media presence with the ability to reach more.

I agree, inner city dwellers have much more immediate concerns than the Constitution, though they certainly make use of the 1st Amendment frequently and vocally. But I hardly consider a large number of them to be fence sitters, they are firmly entrenched on the other side of the gun control debate thanks to the realities of their situation and the voices of their community leaders. Until the root causes of urban decay are addressed, I don't know if any amount of effort will lead this voting demographic to pull the lever for RKBA candidates.

Let us speak to anyone who will listen, with clarity and reason, and let them choose for themselves- but deaf words fall on closed ears and shuttered minds.

So yea, I'm old enough and experienced enough that with my own critical thinking I feel as though I've made up my mind on these issues. I'm always open to new good ideas and will at least listen to them from either side. I do tend to ignore some of the old tired talking points I disagree with but try to be polite.

I feel like the black sheep of the shooting community. I just wondered and hoped that I'd be accepted despite my more moderate as opposed to hardlined views.

As long as dialogue is open, I think progress can be made. Too often, both sides dig in their heels, and shut their ears. My biggest concern is suggesting that further restrictions on "tools", and lack of culpability for the user of the tool, will not lead to progress. Also, the media's continued push of the idea that gun crime is getting worse, when it is actually in a decline, is another thing standing in the way of progress.

In the end, this is America, and I fully support your right to have a differing opinion.

My only points on what you said are

1. The way I look at it there's different types of gun violence and even though handguns cause the most violence the high cap semiauto rifles do the most amount of damage in mass shootings. I'm not to scared of random handgun crime but any time I'm at a crowded public event I have my head on a swivel for my girlfriend and i's safety. That's the scariest to me. I don't even think having a 9mm in my waist would help unless the shooter was unlucky enough to start shooting with his back to me at a close distance. However for random muggings and what not I do think having a 9mm in my waist would help. It's why I support ccw.

2. I think solutions can target some of the "tools" and some of the extrinsic factors, they don't have to be mutually exclusive or all or nothing.

Hey and sorry, let's just drop this since this is a pro 2a forum. Later folks.

I will say this, I will fight like hell for what I believe in. Right now, with gun rights it's what I consider centrist but if an all out ban was ever tried I'd join against it in a second. I also will always think the pen is mightier than the sword.

I just wondered and hoped that I'd be accepted despite my more moderate as opposed to hardlined views.

Moderate views are usually shared by many others that stay silent, but are often crticised by those who won't and aren't always interested in a respectful debate. You have to expect to have the full range of pro 2A views, including the very hardcore.
