Had this gun laying around since my son outgrew it. Single mom in my area has need of a defense gun, (a real need!)

Was wanting to put an adult sized stock, and a magazine extension on it.

All my research here, Brownells, Midway, Mossberg etc has proved fruitless.

Are 500 parts interchangeable with the 505?
Will a 500 tube extension work? Will a 500 (or other model) stock work?
OR do I just pull the plug and give it to her as is?

sorry it appears your out of luck :(

Model 505[edit]
The new Model 505 Youth shotgun, introduced in 2005, is similar to the Bantam but scaled down further. The 505 has a 12-inch (30 cm) LOP buttstock (compared to a standard model's 14 inches or 36 centimetres, or a Bantam's 13 inches or 33 centimetres), a 20-inch (51 cm) barrel, and a four-shot magazine tube. The 505 is available in 20 gauge and .410 bore. Parts are not interchangeable with other model 500 variants.

Alrighty then....finally got the pistol grip installed on my 505. The answer is almost ANY 500 pistol grip will work, but ALL of them will need modification. My gunsmith ordered a kit for mine after I failed to find a reasonably priced option. The kit above in the photo was way to expensive for what I wanted to do. I did not want the stock behind the pistol grip. The forend will not fit no matter what you do, but I am going to refinish mine in a black stain [Jacobean] as well as the factory stock to match so that if I decide to go bird hunting, I will have the option of reinstalling the stock. So the round portion of the pistol grip will need to be dremel'd out a bit to fit, but the fix works perfectly. Total cost for the kit for me was $35. Going to try and sell the forend for a few dollars to offset the minor cost.

Anyway, here are the pics of the shotgun after mods and the package/number of the kit I got. My gunsmith says any pistol grip that is made for the 500 will fit after the round portion is 'adjusted' on the joining surface of the grip.

So if I am understanding correctly, you have a standard youth 20 gauge shotgun with a youth stock that you want to upgrade to a full size stock. Generally women will take a slightly shorter to youth size stock, it is easier to shoot a gun that is too short, than one that is too long. I am 6'2", and am able to shoot guns that have a youth stock, but shooters of smaller stature will have trouble shooting a gun that has a stock too long for them.
Stick with just the youth gun and make sure the single mom knows how to use it and 5 shots should be plenty, an extended mag just makes the gun heavier and more cumbersome if she is not proficient in firearms.

I would have to agree. My daughter is 5’7” with long arms and is more comfortable with youth/compact stocked rifles and shotguns.

The extended mag will not work. Those guns are relagated to 5+1 shot by the barrel design. Just put a shell carrier either Velcro or plastic & a light. I agree the short stock will benefit her. Then teach her how to baracade with it & how to work the action. Get her to shoot it until she is comfortable. Then load that sucker with #2 or #3 buck & get her a 15 round box of slugs. GTG. A Single shot 20 ga shotguns are also good for new shooters to have some form of simple home protection for cheap.

Thanks for the replys guys. I'm 6'5 and youth guns are just so damned short (most production guns are too short for me) I assume everyone needs a longer length of pull.

We go shoot today. We'll see how it fits her and go from there.

My training, which I pass on to her, is to keep the gun 'cruiser safe' so we're dealing with a 4 round limit. Have #3 buck, and slugs.

We'll see what happens.

Thanks again,

Smoke

i still say a pistol grip will be the best for self defense since the action is all ready shorten some
and can be handle easily by a female do to its light kick of a 20 gauge

Pistol grips are almost useless on shotguns especially Mossbergs because the controls are the out of reach. Also pistol grips are especially horrible choices for new shooters. You can read story after story of armed citizens missing with pistol gripped shotguns in real encounters. The cool factor does not always translate into putting a threat down. YMMV

I don't condone the use of pistol grips under any circumstances for any shooter. Your mileage may vary, but i'll stack up against any pistol grip shooter, any day. Been there....done that.

Contrary to what you see in movies, shotguns need to be aimed to hit the target. With some serious practice time I guess there may be some people who could hit what they were aiming at with a PGO shotgun. Not many though.

OP is looking to get a HD shotgun for a single mother. Doubt she would have the inclination, time or money to put in serious practice time with a PGO shotgun.

stick a laser dot on it and a foreword grip for more control and sureshot aim The-Authors-LaserLyte-Center-Mass-Laser-e1514397732432.jpg

Update....

Took her to shoot the 505. She could definitely use a longer stock, but can manipulate well enough. It may just have to do.

I can shoot it easier off the hip at 'inside a room' distances than I can trying to shoulder it......

Thanks for the input.

Watch Jerry Miculek shoot his Mossberg 500 on YT. Full stock and he takes aim. He is amazing with everything that has a trigger. He says trouble at his place and he usually grabs the 500 if something needs dispatched.
