The Model 19 returns

Heathens and ingrates! It's not P&R!

That is pretty though. Hopefully we'll see a no-lock version.

Hmmmmmmm......wonder if the barrels could be used to fix older ones with cracked forcing cones?

Drilling the pin hole through the new barrel should be easy enough- I should think washers and shims could be substituted for the crush ring.....?

The Classic looks good, even with "The Hole," but at that price, one can find plenty of immaculate vintage 19s.

The PC though.....ugh.

I'd guess the new Model 19 has the updated barrel/forcing cone design of the current Model 66 which means the barrels are not exchangeable with the original Model 19.

But, again, that is only a guess on my part. Simplifies manufacturing a bit. Allows the revolver to digest full power loads without fear of cracking the forcing cone.

I wish S&W would ditch the lock but that does not prevent me from buying a new revolver if it has some other interesting features.

I thought the Model 66 Combat Magnum replaced the Model 19.

Is this new model 19 just a blued version of the 66 ?

The underlug on the new 3" model is not the same as the original Model 19 Combat Magnum.

The underlug on the original starts to curve up about 1/4" from the end of the barrel and the curve is slightly concave and ends maybe 1/8" from the the muzzle. This new model has a convex curve to the end of the underlug and it ends almost even with the muzzle.

It doesn't have the same beauty as the original.

...Is this new model 19 just a blued version of the 66...
Nope - 66 is the stainless version of THE model 19. 66 did not replace them - from 1970 up to 2000's they were produced side by side.
It doesn't have the same beauty as the original.
Exactly! But you are comparing apples to oranges with this picture - the rarest 19 with 3" barrel compared to the "standard" 4"... The new 19, except for the ugly grips and the newer less curved hammer shroud is looking OK.

I wouldn't get the Performance Center one, Already have the 586 L comp that is pretty much the same gun just holds one more round and is a bit bigger but not terribly big by any means, I may get the classic though would be a cool beater gun that I dont want to ruin my original 19s, Anyone notice between smith and ruger there seems to a proclivity to make barrels in the 4.25 or 4.20 inch mark? Has the Canadian handgun market really blown up that much in the last few years to warrant companies introducing those as a new standard?

No I'm comparing the 3" to the 3"

The underlug is different and it doesn't look like the old Model 19 Combat Magnum:

I'm just glad that Smith & Wesson has enough confidence in the revolver market to continue to introduce "new" models. First the Model 69/66 and now this one.

With no hope of a law enforcement or military sale, they're counting on sales to "civilian" buyers. I hope they do well with it. The lock doesn't bother me, and I suspect a large percentage of buyers have never owned a Smith & Wesson without one. The ones they make now must sell well, or my dealer wouldn't have the shelf space dedicated to them.

I think it looks nice. Different, but still nice.

Back when I was a cop the M19 was the "ne plus ultra" and any enlightened police department issued them. Nowadays if you carry a revolver you're a dinosaur - "old timer" if they want to be nice. It's pistols almost universally, now. I did often carried a .45 Commander or Ruger Security Six .357 but only after I went with a very small dept. Otherwise I was comfortable with an M10 S&W .38spl.

Being a purist in some regards, "Modern S&W revolvers are cheap copies of Smith & Wesson revolvers".

Agreed to a point.

But if the classic Model 19 has the new design barrel/forcing cone, it will be an improvement in function over the original Model 19.

My 1980 vintage Model 19 has had one barrel change due to a cracked forcing cone. I tend to treat it tenderly these days. It might be worth getting one with the new design barrel/forcing cone to put to the 357 magnum test.

I like the L frame guns but they are a bit heavier than the K frame. The K frame S&W guns are very nice.

Smith and Wesson has added the Model 19 to its "classic" line. So far, it's only available in 4.25" barrel, and it is blighted by that peculiar malformation on the left side. Here's hoping they do a snubnose version; I might be tempted by that, lock or not.
Hmmmmmm....did anyone notice they list the barrel material as stainless? Wonder what process they are using to blue it?

I wish S&W would ditch the lock but that does not prevent me from buying a new revolver if it has some other interesting features.

And that's why they will never "ditch the lock." The beauty of the free market is that consumers have a voice in what gets made and what doesn't. Every time S&W sells a new revolver, someone is voicing their approval of the lock. The only way they'll "ditch the lock" is if the guns sit on the shelves.
