Well....since my son absconded with the first one we got and the local sporting goods store had them on sale....I picked up another one so we would not have to fight about who gets it first.

I was a little bit worried because the first one shoots so well and I will admit some small fears that it might have been a fluke. Those fears were soon put to rest as soon as we got this one on paper. I was getting nicely clustered 1.5 inch or thereabouts groups at 100 yards with zero malfunctions. We are shooting Golden Tiger FMJ. After we had it on paper, we spent the morning just shooting for fun at various targets.

I am not sure what it is about this rifle: the size, the weight, the magazine, the accuracy, or maybe all of the above, but it just works. Of all the toys in the safe, these are getting the most milage and have become a trusted campion in the truck for our desert journeys.

I am also becoming quite enamored with the 7.62x39. It has a mild report, is decently accurate, will easily engage an adversary out to 300 yards or a little bit more, and ammo is compact and stores nicely for travel. I have tried it in the past, but I guess I did not pay enough attention. I can't wait to start handloading!

I know this post is worthless without pictures, so here are few:

This gun eats cheap ammo and ejects with enthusiasm.

Our first stop for the day.

My group at 100 yards; one in the tube and five in the magazine shot as fast as I could get a sight picture and fire.

I’ve tried to tell people in my sphere of influence that the 7.62x39 is a very efficient and effective caliber, but most think of the round as it comes out of a clapped out bullet hose of an AK47.

Put it into a bolt action or an AR47 with a good barrel and cheap combloc ammo will surprise you.

I have to admit, I wasn't a fan of the idea of a 7.62x39 bolt action rifle, mostly due to the bullet/bore diameter issue (which as it turns out wasn't much of an issue after all). That is until a friend of mine bought a CZ chambered for it and I shot his. I did a complete 180 and now I think it makes for one neat little rifle..... His shoots darn good too...

You're not telling anyone who has a CZ 527 or Savage bolt action 7.62x39, anything they don't already know. We are all just smiling along with you and happy you found what has been arguably the best kept secret in fun, affordable and accurate bolt action rifles.

Believe me, if you start handloading it only gets better. Just the other day, a friend of mine shooting my Savage 7.62x39 fired one of the smallest 200-yard groups I've ever seen. It measured 3/4". And this is from a factory barrel and action, and cheap "Tupperware" stock that is not bedded or modified.

That cartridge is very, very accurate in a good bolt action rifle.

I am curious as to how much work it would take to put a fixed sight on the front and a ghost ring on the back. Would be nice.

Personally I would love to see one of these with irons and a scout scope base.

The barrel is threaded, so I would imagine that a screw on front sight would be doable.

Screw on front sight? I am not getting any useful info looking for this. Care to provide more info?

if you want a front sight it would be easy to get a slightly over sized aluminum blank threaded to match the barrel, then have that d and t'd for a sight base. you could then use a weaver mount peep rear.

I had an aluminum blank made for my 6.5gr cost about 25 bucks, and its a lot easier to drill and tap than a barrel. If you screw up the indexing you can always remove material or add shims till it times correctly.

One of the most fun range guns I've found is a bolt x39. Their also handy dandy little hunting rigs too. The Remington 799, Zastava, Savage, CZ, Ruger, any of them ive shot have been fun and sweet shooters.

I own the CZ 527 Carbine and folks don't even seem interested in it until they shoot it. Then they love it and a few have asked if it was for sale. (It's not and never will be)

I have contemplated buying one of the Rugers because of the mini 30 mag usage and the Ruger Ranch and Pred I own both shoot wonderful. For the money it seems the lil Ruger x39 would be hard to beat.

I own the (insert Savage model 10 for me here) and folks don't even seem interested in it until they shoot it. Then they love it and a few have asked if it was for sale. (It's not and never will be)

;)

With my old eyes I put a Bushnell TRS 25 on mine and that’s all I need. Simple, light, fun.

I really like the RAR in 7.62x39 but it begs for open sights as already mentioned.

heres a link on the 7.62x39 vs 30-30 so guys been thinking and wondering if I may ask whats the difference between these two calibers? and also back when the savage bolt action 30-30's were out on the shelves the sales wasn't all that good so why is this 7.62x39 much more a hotter item in the bolt action guns if the bolt action 30-30 isn't much different??

As far as I’m aware the only 30-30 bolt action savage ever made was the 340 which hasn’t been made in 33 years (1985).

The main appeal to the 7.62x39 at least for me is more punch than 223 and accurate $4 a box ammo.

What’s the difference between 7.62x39 and 30-30? 25 grains of bullet weight and $15 a box.
