At the LGS today they had a S&W 63 ND made in the mid to late 90's with a 4" barrel. Except for a light turn line on the cylinder it appeared to be new, this gun was tight and the DA was stiff. No box or papers they wanted $675 which seemed high to me. Is this a fair price?

The model 63 was introduced in 1977. The dash1 came out in 82, dash 2 in 89 ( dash 2 was a special run of 2 inch barred guns). Dash 3 also in 1989, dash 4 in 1998, then it was discontinued. Only the no dash had a pinned barrel and wood grips. The M63 No Cash stainless 22/32 kit gun is highly sought after by collectors and I have seen them sell for $750 if in excellent condition and including the box and all.
Without a box that price may be a bit high, but not by much.. If it is truly a No Cash it would have been made well before the 90s. If it is a dash 3 from the 90s its about $100 too high

The barrel is not pinned, but it was stamped Mod. 63 there was no dash # ?

I think it's a bit high too but then again, prices vary in different parts of the country.

Just a heads up, Bud's has a 3" M63 for $641 brand new so I think you should pass for $675. That's above full retail.

The M63, 22\32 kit gun from this era is a completely different gun than the current production model 63. Saying that the old 63 is above retail is kind of like finding a mint 69Camaro SS with 5 miles on it for $40,000 and then saying that its above retail for a new Camaro. It may be, but they aren't really the same

Seems a might pricey to me too but then again I haven't been looking at Model 63s in quite some time. Was looking for a decent .22 DA revolver for my wife. Found this Model 34 about 6 years ago, like new in the box, for $399. They're out there; it's more a matter of being in the right place at the right time.

I'd have broken my wrists snapping that up.

Well it did help a bit that an old buddy of mine worked behind the counter at the gun store where I bought it and knew of my predilection for older S&W revolvers!

In my parts, Model 63's from the 1970's or so go for $800-$900 depending on condition and accessory parts included. There is kind of a cult following here for some reason.

I'm not sure what 1990 versions are going for but the lack of the safety lock would add a premium to the gun over current production for many folks.

I do not know if the 1990 versions of the Model 63 have the stretched frame that accommodates 357 Magnum in other J-frame versions but that might lower the cost versus the earlier models as the gun is not quite as trim as the shorter frame versions. Conjecture from me for the most part.

Model 34's (blued version) are not as pricey here.

Sweet very nice looking revol.

Not that I would do this but can the Mod 63 be re-chambered for 22 mag.?
I'm not sure, but it seems to me that when I bought mine I had a choice between it being chambered for 22LR or 22 Mag. It's been a long time though, so I might not be remembering right. Maybe someone else could chime in and say whether or not "Kit Guns" were ever chambered in 22 Mag?

Well, there was the S&W 51 .22 mag J frame.

Also the 650 and 651.
650 was a 3" 6-shot .22 WMR with fixed sights and round butt.
651 was a 4" 6-shot .22 WMR with adjustable sights and a square butt.
Both are highly collectable.

One of the dumbest things I've ever done was selling off my 63... now that I have a daughter I wish I had that little revolver.

I'd love to have another one, but I'm not prepared to pay $675 for one... I buy shooters at shooter prices, not shooters at inflated collector prices.

Trust me, I've done dumb things like selling guns that I later wished I had kept. However, I won't sell my 63, not even for $675, and both of my daughters have been grown and gone for a long time now. They both learned to shoot handguns with that little revolver, and they both knew it was either in my tackle box or on my hip whenever we were fishing or camping.:)

I hear you, Sir. :) I purchased this no-dash Model 63 (bottom) from a friend back in 1980. To this day, it makes my short list of "the one gun I would keep if I could only keep one." I'm sure it's still as tight and solid as the day my friend bought it. :)

I dislike the grips on mine. Where are those from (the bottom one), JFrame, they are nice? Is yours a round or square butt?
