I ordered a Colt New Frontier about a year and a half ago. It was finely delivered Friday. I am very pleased with it. It is a P4840. Love the 4 3\4" Colts. It is very well made. I looked on line and don't see the New Frontier in the 2018 catalog. The Single Acton Army is very limited also. Does anyone know if the New Frontier is being produced or has it been phased out? If they are not being produced anymore, I feel lucky to have received this one. I know Colt is going hard building 1911's. Hope the single actions are not going to be a thing gets the axe.

I had to look that model up. Very, very nice. Congrats!

Only a year & a half? You are indeed a very lucky guy!
Congratulations!

Colt Single Action Army production has slowed to a crawl over the past 2 or three years. No custom shop orders have been taken for more than a year.

Howdy

Colt has been putting very little effort into producing the Single Action Army for the last few years. A year ago or so they laid off the supervisor of the Custom Shop, where all the SAAs are built. As I recall that only left one or two employees to continue assembling Single Action Armies (including New Frontiers).

No idea why Colt cares so little about producing the SAA, but obviously they don't care very much. No idea what the future holds for the SAA.

I would not dream of ordering a new one. I am always on the lookout for used ones, like the two 2nd Gens in my avatar.

Recently picked up my first New Frontier, a 2nd Gen from 1965, 45 Colt. The case colors on the frame are mostly gone, and it has a few slight nicks and dings, but it shoots like a dream. Really nice light trigger, and it locks up perfectly. Have not taken it apart yet, so I'm not sure if it was tuned or left the factory with such a nice action and light trigger pull. The only thing I need to address is the grips are not the originals and do not fit properly. You can see they are too small for the frame. Working on locating some better grips.

I had to look it up too and found it on the Gallery of Guns website. Fine looking revolver and I have to say I don't ever recall seeing a Colt New Frontier with a 4 5/8th" barrel before. Very fine indeed! Well worth the wait as well!

On the ColtForum there has been much discussion lately about the possible demise of the SAA. Although many hope it isn't true, about the same number fear it is. Point being no one knows. This applies to the New Frontier as well. No one knows if it will continue to be made. I would venture to say, if Colt continues the way they are going now you may have received one of the last NF Single Actions built. Enjoy shooting it and take good care of it.

Why is it that the grip frames on single actions seem to vary so much in the same model? Gun manufacturer doesn't seem to matter. I've seen various grip makers that either want you to send a tracing of the grip frame or send the frame itself. Can't think offhand of any other mass production gun part that seems so variable.

The reason I have always heard about the grips, is the amount of hand fitting involved in the making of Colt SAA’s. No two are exactly alike. Other brands I have no idea about. Grips are made over size and fitted to the individual gun to get a tight fit.

I hate to see the day come there are no more genuine Colt single actions made. Browning had stopped producing the HI-Power. Most companies are putting out as much of the fantasy plastic as they can and just quiting on walnut and steel. Other than 1911’s steel pistols are not being made. The plastic stuff is good but there is no real quality in it, plastic has no soal like walnut and steel. It is just molded and stamped, no real workmanship.
