S&W only one of each frame

Only one per frame size? Here goes:

J-frame, 342 AirLite .38 Spl.
K-frame, Model 17, 6" .22LR
L-frame, Model 696, 3" .44 Spl.
N-frame, Model 27-2, 5", .357 mag.

I have no interest in an X-frame.

Okay, just play along on the “if I were adding to the collection” mentality

OK

For my Fantasy Collection of only one Model for each frame size, let's start with the Tip Ups.

Top to bottom, a Model #2, Old Army, 32 Rimfire. Three Pins, six inch barrel. The most common variation.

Next down, a Model #1 1/2, Old Model, 32 Rimfire, in keeping with the frame style of the Model #2.

At the bottom, Model #1, 2nd Issue, 22 Short, in keeping with the frame style of the other two.

Model%202%20Model%20Model%201%20One%20Half%20Model%201%202nd%20Issue_zpsvplidc2x.jpg

Now let's move on to Top Breaks.

We'll start with 32 caliber, as there were no 22s.

We'll have to have a 32 Single Action. Yeah, there were some models with trigger guards, but I think the spur trigger models are the most interesting.

32%20Single%20Action_zpsnqsbvmhm.jpg

While we're still in 32 caliber we will have to include a Safety Hammerless (Lemonsqueezer). I think the best choice would be a little Bicycle Revolver so we can protect Daisy from ruffians and stray dogs while we cycle through the park on our bicycle built for two.

Bicycle%20Revolver%2001_zpsqw4vquzz.jpg

Next on to 38s. The Fantasy Collection will have to include a Baby Russian. That's all there is to say about that.

Baby%20Russian%2001_zpslv3l5mti.jpg

And we'll have to include a 38 Double Action because I like them so much.

38%20Double%20Action%204th%20Model%2001_zpsukpbkle7.jpg

And finally, while still in the #2 size, we will have to include a Perfected. I used to think they were silly, with their redundant Top Latch and Thumb Latch. You have to remember to activate both at the same time in order to open it. I used to think they were silly, but they have grown on me. This nice blued one with a 3 1/4" barrel will do nicely.

Perfected%20Blue%2001_zpsjv3xghnu.jpg

Then we'll move on to Number 3s. Which one to include as our only representative? There were five different models, the American, the Russian, the Schofield, the New Model Number Three, and the 44 Double Action.
I guess if I have to choose just one, it would be the New Model Number Three. We'll choose a blued one with a 6 1/2" barrel chambered for 44 Russian.

New%20Model%20Number%20Three%20Blue%2031022%2001_zpsmbzqn4z8.jpg

Oh, what the heck, we'll include a Russian too. The frame size is the same, but the shape is different enough that I think we can call it a different frame. We'll choose a 2nd Model. Chambered for 44 Russian of course.

Russian.jpg

And if we've gone down that road we might as well include a Schofield too, huh? The frame is different than the other two. We'll choose a 1st Model, because they were the coolest. Chambered for 45 Schofield of course.

schofield01_zpse1ff6025.jpg

And what about a 44 Double Action? The frame is pretty different on that one too, yes? We'll choose a blued 44 one chambered for 44 Russian. Maybe we'll substitute an old dime for the front sight.

NewFrontSight02_zpsf4e1b0dd.jpg

Gee, my Fantasy Collection is getting pretty big already.

I wonder if we should include Single Shots too?

Nope, this collection is only revolvers.

Too bad.

I guess it's time to move on to Hand Ejectors.

We'll start small, with the tiny M frame Ladysmiths. I think a blued 2nd Model with a 3 1/2" barrel will do for our Fantasy Collection. Seven shots, 22 Long only.

Ladysmith%202nd%20Model%2003_zpshllzjqbg.jpg

On to I frames.

I'm only allowed one? What to choose, what to choose....

If I'm only allowed one, I will choose a blued 32 Regulation Police, with a 4 1/4" barel.

32%20Regulation%20Police%2001_zpsq3pyvn2k.jpg

Next on to J frames.

Sorry, no 357 Magnum J frames for me, too much recoil for my dainty hands. And although the 22/32 Kit guns are nice, if I am only allowed one J frame it will be a Flat Latch Model 36, Chiefs Special.

Model%2036%20Flat%20Latch%201961%2003_zpscfdunoe7.jpg

Now it gets really tough. K frames. So many to choose from. 22s, 32s,38s, 357 Mags. Fixed sights or adjustable.

This is really tough.

I think if I had to choose just one K frame, it would be a.................................................................

Model 14-3 with a six inch barrel.

model14-3box02_zps33983522.jpg

L frames. Not really too crazy about them. Maybe one. A Model 686-6.

model%20686-6%20grip%2002_zpshxallncm.jpg

N frames.

Another tough choice.

But I think a Triple Lock would win out. Definitely a 44 Special. Probably a nice well worn blue one like this.

Triple%20Lock%2001_zps5ilw6ied.jpg

X Frames?

Nope, there would be no X Frame Smiths in my fantasy collection.

J - Model 49
L- 686, 6"
N-29, 8"
K- As the OP said, this is the tough one. I've had model 10's, old K22's and Mod 17's, 66 and I like the 15 /K38 but never owned one... I guess since I already choose the 686 I could get by without the 10, 66 and 15 and would opt for the M17 in the K frame....
X-frame- I'll Pass, not really my thing...

I can't do this either, every time I start I changed my mind.

For example, I thought my N frame would be a M625 in 45 Colt but I changed to a M25 but then I changed again to a M27. I can't choose.

K frame would be a M15, no a M19, no no, a M14... Oh I can't choose just one!

Sorry I can't but I like many of the listings here.

There is less of a trend here than I expected...a lot less. For example, I figured L frame was going to be the .357 show in 586/686. It is much more varied than I would have expected.

But there are a lot of GREAT guns on the list, and most of them are not impossible to find. There are also some notable guns missing which is also surprising. I’m not sure but I don’t recall there being a triple lock 44 spl on the list, or a k32 masterpiece, 10mm 686, or a few of the others which are more elusive than your average model 10. And SOMETHING in the 32 flavors...32 mag, 327, 32-20 all seem absent or under represented here.

Fairly easy choices for me: J frame - model 60 in 38 special, K frame - 2 1/2" model 19/66, L frame - 4" 581, N frame - 3 1/2" model 27, X frame - no desire to own one.

I only have 3 S&Ws, a M38, a M10 & a M58.

Those would be 3 of my favorites.
J frame - a M38 because of it's hidden hammer - makes for great pocket carry
K frame - a M13 because you can fire 38s or 357s - and I just like the looks of the fixed sighted handguns.
L Frame - I've been drooling over the 581s - again because you can fire 38s or 357s - and I just like the looks of the fixed sighted handguns.
N Frame - this one is hard to choose. I like my 41 mag, but could very easily be persuaded to choose a M25 or 29

31, 13, and 58 are the ones I would keep from my pic...I would aquire a blue 581 or 586 to be happy

Take another look at the last photo in my post.

Regarding a K-32 or a 32-20, if I could only have one K frame, it would not be a 32-20, or the elusive K-32. That's why I chose my Model 14.

Still looking for an elusive K-32 or Model 16.

Regarding 32-20, here is a K frame 32-30 Hand Ejector from 1916.

32-20%20Hand%20Ejector%2006_zpsop6q7nfx.jpg

And for good measure, here is a Colt Police Positive Special, also chambered for 32-20 from 1926.

Police%20Positive%20Special%2032-20%2001_zpsjkyoofvv.jpg

Both are a delight to shoot, but if only allowed one of each frame size, neither would make my list,

I frame - R&P 6" target in 32SWL
J frame -Model 36
K frame - Model 14; 547 in 2nd place
L frame - 686 Plus Deluxe
N frame - Model 25-2

I frame - I have a model 33 Regulation Police. A wonderful gun, but I don't know how it compares with most other I frames. I did have a .32 HE, but the 33 was much better. A 4" bbl on a small revolver is great fun!

J Frame - I have a beat up 36 3 inch RB in my IWB holster right now. Truly one of the best CC weapons ever!

K frame - Like others, I'm also going to go with the model 15...any dash. But I recently acquired a model 13 post pinned barrel, and it's outstanding, too.

L frame - I have a modern 586 Classic with a lock. Maybe the most accurate handgun I own. I don't believe all the anti-lock nonsense at all.

N frame - Highway Patrolman. It weighs a ton, but it's solid because of it. Will still be shootable in 500 years.

Anything bigger and you should really just get a rifle, IMO.

I’m not that well versed in revolvers so bear with me, correct me if need be:

I frame: These exist??
J: MP 340 Pd
K: Mode 617
L: MP TRR8
N: 629, Dirty Harry style
X: 500 magnum, cuz power

Yeah, they exist but have not been made for a long time. The I frame was supplanted by the J frame. Roughly the same size, first there was the I Frame, then the Improved I Frame, if I recall correctly, then the J frame.

The I frame was conceived as the right size for a 32 caliber, six shot revolver. There were 22 caliber I frames too and 38 S&W five shot I frames, but the I frame was not big enough to house a cylinder long enough for the 38 Special cartridge.

Here is a photo for a comparison of an I Frame and a J Frame revolver. The revolver at the top is a stainless J Frame Model 63 22/32 Kit Gun, the revolver at the bottom is a six shot I Frame 32 Regulation Police.

Notice how much more elongated the trigger guard is on the J frame, and if you look closely you can see the cylinder is longer, long enough to chamber a 38 Special round.
