It will not damage the loading lever to keep it in. But, it's just an extra inconvience when it's there because it's not needed and therefore in the way.

I suggest always locking the cylinder pin using the cylinder pin retaining pin. This is true in both conversion and percussion modes. There are many a fella who have bent their cylinder pins when percussion loading because the retaining pin was not in the lock position.

Yes.

Around 6 or 7 years ago, as I recall, it was the Howell 6-shot .45 Colt conversion cylinder with canted cylinders for the 1858 that Taylor's and Company purchased the exclusive distribution rights on that particular patented design from Howell. Even Howell doesn't sell it directly. So that's probably the only particular conversion cylinder they have exclusive distribution rights. But they in fact sell Howell products. Recall, that Taylors oftentimes calls products "Taylors 1858" or "Taylors 1851", etc. It ain't "Taylors"....they don't manufacture a thing. Their revolver line is primarily Uberti and some Pietta. Similar concept with Cimarron. I believe both may put in special orders for a particular finish, etc. from time to time that their competitors may not offer. But, they are all Uberti, Pietta, et al.

Perfect!...you are good to go.

I think the bent cylinder pin issue must happen some time after the cylinder was removed as in cleaning it then someone forgets to lock the cylinder pin in place. Then next time they are out at the range they try to load a lead ball, the cylinder pin starts to pull out but then they continue to try to force the ball in. Don't know exactly but I know from time to time someone is looking for a new cylinder pin because his got bent and then he gets upset when he finds out there are no longer replacement parts available.

I made some .45 colt shot shells with 2 kinds of brass for my conversion cylinder. Pattern and penetration was good. No noticable difference in enlarged primer pocket cartridges.
 
A visit to a LGS in Rhode Island found not one but three ROA's for sale. The surprise was they are all brand new from Ruger and priced at a whooping $999.00 each. One with a 5 1/2" barrel. Does any one know if these new issues have the same internal parts as the originals or are they just a Black Hawk with a cap gun cylinder.

If these are just Blackhawks with a cap & ball cylinder, they will still require an FFL transfer. The frame would be a modern gun frame.
Do they have a ball ram?

I doubt they could command that price for a Blackhawk. However, I've been surprised before.

New Old Stock. There is no such thing as a Ruger factory Blackhawk with a percussion cylinder.
 
I handled one of the three, a brand new gun from all appearances, had a red Ruger Medallion on the grips. Salesman said they were new from Ruger, I didn't question that as I have heard other rumors of Ruger reintroducing the line. Didn't pay much more attention than that. I'll pay them another visit and pay more attention to detail and serial numbers. The loading levers
, ball rams seemed somewhat different.
This LGS, by Rhode Island standards, is a mega store. The gun displays are by manufacture and they have a separate section for used and or consigned pieces. The ROAs' were on display in the new Ruger display case.

Most likely they're probably from the TALO offering from 2017. Likely, just some leftover Ruger parts to get them out of the way in the factory but a "TALO exclusive" with the red medallion. As I understand it, TALO deals with limited edition, close-out buys, exclusive runs of firearms.

Thanks for that info. At that asking price of 1000 a piece they will remain in someone else's collection. For a moment I'd hoped that if Ruger was making them again I'd be able to get parts for one of my three. It has a hair trigger and needs either a new hammer or trigger. I do shoot it one occasion but its like those double set triggers on rifles. Once cocked the release is measured in ounces.

One of the good gunsmiths who specialize in cowboy action guns and who are familiar with ROAs might be able salvage the parts you have by welding and reprofiling the hammer and sear. Probably be a little cheaper than buying another gun.

I would post the question on the SASS Wire and get recommendations on who could do the work if no one frequenting this forum volunteers!
 
Ruger Old Army in action:

A couple of weeks ago I competed at the Powder Creek Cowboys annual cowboy action match, the Prince of the Pistoleers, in Lenexa, Kansas. (The name is an honorific to Wild Bill Hickok who was a Marshal in Monticello, KS, now part of Lenexa.)

Fly is a professional photographer who, with his lovely wife, operates Sports Photography and Design in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. He obviously knows how to capture cowboys at their best. When I saw the fire from my Ruger Old Army that he captured on my first stage at this competition, I had to order a copy of the photo. I have not yet received my print in the mail, but I took a screenshot of the photo proof from his website, and offer it for your entertainment. I love the fire (even though I did not take first place in my category!!). Twenty grains of Schuetzen FFG under a home cast pure lead round ball. Joy!

Cmon J Bar great photo. . No fire but plenty of smoke in this photo from the1970's. Shoot my ROAs all the time. Even gave the Semi auto guys a run at some bowling pin shoots. Stage two loaded ROAs on the table. Kills those pins. Even my Avitar my fixed sight ROAs with 45 Colt conversion cylinders and Belt Mountain quick change pins.

Ah, the good old 70's. Is that a faded color photo, or was the photo taken in Black and White? That was before the Cowboy Action thing got started (officially), correct?

Old black and white. Also probably a very early ROA. Had no idea I would ever be shooting cowboy action and other games at the level I do today. In those days it was all about starting family, getting through school, getting a haircut and starting career.

SASS started in 1981.

LOL, bell bottom jeans, down jacket, long hair and a beard, could have been me, someone is around my age, up there, as in Senior.
 
Happy Fourth of July all. We are up here on the Northern edge of the Spring fire in Colorado. We live under a cloud of smoke from burning Sheep Mountain today but still there was companionship and burgers down at the Community Center. We thanked the firefighters and National Guardsmen for doing what they could to keep us in our homes. Everyone enjoy your freedom and this National Holiday. The Spirit of America is strong despite political division and economic division. We are one Nation and still do great things_together_...

Used to go through that every summer in the Bitterroot in Montana. It's now so dry here in Elko I am afraid to go and chase Jackrabbits. The whole area is a tinderbox. They stopped the 4th of July fireworks after a half-dozen shots because of a fire. So the Rugers are getting lonely and sad.
