Have any of you played with any of the various 35 caliber AR-15 chamberings?
Is it difficult to get pistol bullets to feed?
Is it more intelligent to go with the 450 Bushmaster?

What 35 cal chamberings are being used in AR-15 platforms?

I have a 450 Bushmaster and its a lot of fun and a very capable medium range gun.

I saw someone built a 35 Remington on a AR-10 Platform that was successful. I don't remember the cost but I imagine it costs was "thrown aside" on that project.

There is a 35 Gremlin and 357 Gunner.

I feel it is, because I have one. If a big ol' XTP will feed through in fourty five, I imagine a thirty five will too. Barring any individual case feed issues.
I shoot a lot of different .357 and .358 bullets. I figured it's an easy way to burn up bullets that I don't like.
I do use 452 xtp mags in my inline.

Interesting, had not heard of those two cartridges. Seems like they could be fun cartridges but at the same time with them being wildcats presently you going to be nearly on your own for brass production and getting parts to make it work. Like I said seems like a fun project cartridge.

I was wondering about making the feed ramp work with pistol bullets.
The 450 is all figured out for me.

If I were going bigger than 5.56 I'd go with the 6.5 Grendel. It is suitable for any game animal in North America, albeit at somewhat closer ranges than many other traditional cartridges fired from bolt guns.

My 2nd option would be 450 Bushmaster. Honestly, the 6.5 will kill any animal the 450 will kill, at longer ranges, with more accuracy, less cost, and less recoil. But some guys just like big bullets, and some guys just want to tinker and experiment. Which is OK and if that is your goal there are many other options to experiment with.

I currently have every hunting rifle I could need, short of African game. This would purely be a cheap target shooting gun. I like tinkering, so a 223 would be boring.

I have an AR in .358 WSSM. For a while Indiana had goofy caliber laws for deer and it was legal. Made by Dedicated Technologies out of Minnesota

Quite accurate and hard hitting with mild recoil. Upper with a Shilen Match barrel and dies was about $1,000

That would be a beast.

I have a question, looking quickly at the dimensions of the .223/5.56 and understanding the relationship between .223 case with .22TCM and 9mm, why can't someone make a .223 necked up .357 for an AR?

I've done a little looking and haven't found much. There may be too much case taper, but I feel like any competent handloader would be able make a straightwalled .223/5.56 to use standard AR components and 9mm/357 bullets

I hadn't thought of that or seen it. I will be doing some more research.

There's 357 AR Mag (and Max) which is just a 5.56 blown straight out.

Starline even makes straight walled un-marked 5.56 cases that all you need to do is trim and run them through a 357 die.

Under current regs it is Ohio legal for deer and I'm considering building a 357 AR Max.
Answered my question! Thank you!!

Looks like barrels for that are a custom job. It would be perfect for me.

That's the catch. The feed ramp can be hogged out easily enough, but custom order chamber reamers are where a 357 AR Max build gets tricky.

As far as mags go, it looks like it's very easy to modify a Pmag to work.

If I hadn't recieved a 357 Rem Max barrel for my Encore LITERALLY the same day I discovered the AR Max, I may have gone a different route.

Oh well, in the meantime I can get a feel for how the Rem Max works on deer and which bullets & powder I like and how it shoots before going to an AR. At which point divesting myself of the Rem Max barrel shouldn't be hard being the flattest shooting deer legal Ohio cartridge (tied only by the AR Max). And at that point I've got an even more ingenious, twisted and convoluted idea for my Encore frame.

I believe I came across a nice write up on the 357 Gunner by 1st Marine over on the 6.8 Forum.
That was one of the write ups that got me thinking. He was running pointed bullets. I would want to run XTP's.

Given that it is a straight wall cartridge why couldn't you simply take a .378 inch reamer grind a .348 pilot on the front and run it to the proper depth for head spacing on the case mouth? Then manually put the chamfer and radius at the chamber mouth. This seems like a pretty easy chamber to fake with standard tooling if you are only doing a few barrels.
