Rifle Reviews in magazines...along with other reviews.

I was stationed at KI Sawyer, up in the UP.
I never managed a bumper sticker, though.
During the winter I was there I never had a bumper to stick one on. :D

I tend to think of pretty much any magazine as infotainment like the history channel is something there actual viable info? Maybe. Is 95+% bs that will likely get you dead? definitely.

Pick a current gunmag issue.
Point out to me in detail the 95% BS that'll likely get me dead.
Denis

Please- Pick out any copy of a mainstream gunmag like Guns & Ammo, Gun World, Combat Handguns, Guns Of The Old West, Shooting Times, etc. currently on the stands & point out the 95% of the BS in it that'll get somebody dead.

The mag you choose should be less than 10 bucks, a cheap way of putting your money where your mouth is. :)

I am good friends with a gun writer who reviews shotguns (along with other technical stuff) . He is also a retired lawyer. Makers ship him guns all the time; he brings them out to the local club and he lets everyone shoot them and then takes our comments into consideration when writing his review. Since I know him, I know how to read between the lines and can spot when he really dislikes something. When Ithaca was first reborn, he was sent a new 37. Like Denis mentioned, this was sent for review. The first one didn't work, the second didn't work and he told them if the third one didn't work to not bother sending him another. One would think that if you, as a company, were sending a sample to a writer, especially as a new company, you would make damn sure you cherry-picked the best of the best for a review.......... He mentioned those first two failures in his eventual review; and does so for any gun. He strips them down, takes many detailed pics and gives his review with hinesty that his reputation is highly regarded.

Personally, I think the decline of the printed word is beyond sad. Apparently, people would rather get free information from anonymous folks on the internet, which ranges from very good to dangerously stupid, than pay a little for that of a professional. Since when has profit become such an evil concept? People are becoming socialists without even knowing it. Welcome to the world of Google, where everyone has access to free information but people are dumber than they've ever been.
Eh the dangerously stupid stuff is usually pretty easy to pick out. More importantly as this thread has made painfully clear, “professional” reviews are a business and they have neither the time or resources to dedicate to in depth reviews.
As a shooter I can tell you my opinion often changes over time from when I have 100 rounds through a gun to 1000 to 10000. And as a writer (I’ve published >400 articles and some books and was an editor) I think they do
A fine job with the resources they have. But I just don’t care what anyone thinks about a gun until they’ve used it in classes or matches and have 1000s of rounds through it. Or if it’s a hunting rifle that only gets shot 3x per year, that they’ve used it for many years.
I don’t really think it’s necessary to call people socialists just because there are better sources of info that are free. And “professional” is pretty dubious. Professional what? Writer?

Years ago, on another forum, Clint Smith (look him up) made the mistake of joining, to participate in gun discussions.
He was immediately attacked by the ignorant, the unknowing, the brainless, the arm-chair commandoes, and the video-game players, over statements he was making in efforts to discuss various gun-related things.
Clint is a good dude. I spent time at TR when it was in Texas. And while you have a point and that does keep some egos away, there are still a lot of BTDT types on the forums (some more than others). The late great Pat Rogers used to post quite often. I think others like Mas Ayoob still lurk and occasionally post. OTOH there are some big names that post too much to the detriment of their reputations

"Better" is certainly debatable. I used the term socialist because there is an undercurrent of demonizing profit.

Professional, as in it's your paid profession to write these articles and books and work within the industry. Big difference between that and someone who does it in their spare time for fun. Stakes and commitment are higher. Your name is attached to everything you write, 180° from the anonymous internet post.

Mas at least seems to listen more than he speaks ... he's definitely mentioned some stuff (trends) he sees in internet forums in some of his printed columns ...

Initials wouldn't be LAV by any chance? Anyway, you're right, Clint is a good dude, and Pat Rogers almost legendary. I also have respect for guys such as Reitz and Wheat who do nice columns in SWAT ...

Craig, That’s not my experience. I know most of the best rifle shooters and rifle builders in the world. None of them write articles in gun mags for a living. They post fairly often online.

Gotcha. I like that guy, it just seems as though he changes his platform of preference as often as he (presumably) changes his undershorts ...

I like him also. He should have tried an acting career. He would have made a real good southern small town cop.:D

I wonder if he posts here?

All I want form a gun review is how that particular gun functioned with common ammo I can walk into most any hardware store in the backwoods of Wisconsin and was the gun reliable . How accurate it was with said ammo. Say Remington Core-Lokt, , Federal power points or the Winchester equivalent in the common weights that ammo is available in. I need no more than this. This is the exact point I want an article to get to without all of the pontification and superfluous words.

Denis, just read your CH review of the newest Desert Eagle ... so my question to you is, if you had the money available, would you buy one?

This thread is loaded with information. Now I know who Dpris really is, or at least I think I know.

That's a lot of firearm knowledge to be in one head. Always liked your articles, by the way.

Also , I have never been influenced by any gun article to buy a gun.
You're reading the wrong articles then. I couldn't count how much money I've spent because of Elmer Keith, Skeeter Skelton, Bob Milek, Ross Seyfried, John Taffin, Brian Pearce, Dennis Adler, Denis Prisbrey and others. Hell, if it doesn't inspire you to own you don't have, shoot something you've never shot, hunt something you've never hunted or do something you've never done, what's the point???

Dog,
Nope, I would not buy one. :)
Lemme explain, though- I COULD have diverted money into either of the two Desert Eagles I tested, 20 years apart.
My buddy who helped work with the first one did buy the test sample, as you saw in the write-up, and he still loves that thing today.

My sole reason for not buying one (two reasons, actually) have nothing to do with quality, the guns are just simply too big for me, and I'd have zero use for one.

Quality on those DEs has been consistently excellent, same with accuracy & function. Recoil is very tolerable.
They are very well-built, but too big & heavy to carry, for me, in a .44 Mag field gun role & I don't shoot the .44 Mag recreationally.
When I do carry a .44 Mag in appropriate circumstances, it's either a Ruger Red or a Smith 629, depending on how MUCH .44 Mag I need along. :)
Both are lighter & more compact than the big Eagles.

Otherwise, if you're asking for a recommendation in considering whether or not to buy one, I can give you that- buy it with confidence in the quality.
If it fits a need or a desire, it's worth the money.

Coal,
Thanks for the kind words.

Craig,
Check's in the mail, as usual. :D
