I was at the hunting club cleaning the dog kennels yesterday and a new member was up there target shooting . He had one of his friends meet him there and he pulls out this really nice 1939 model 52 that he just bought at an estate auction . He gave me the pleasure of shooting it , what a nice rifle . I can only imagine what that rifle would cost if they were still making them like that now .

Old 52 Winchesters have the quality and reputation like that of an old Auburn, Cord, or Duesenberg. They are still considered by many the finest rim fires ever made. Herbert Houze's book title, "Winchester 52, Perfection in Design" pretty well describes the sentiment many hold these gun to.

Whenever a new .22 rim fire hits the market, they are always compared and measured against the 52's. Most of the 52's were target variations, but the real sweethearts are the Sporters. These highly sought after variations can bring $3,000-to-$8000 depending on model and condition.

The actions are so overbuilt that you'd think it was a shrunk down Model 70. When Winchester dropped it from the product line, Anschutz filled the market niche for precision rim fire rifles. A few have tried to duplicate the 52 sporters, Kimber, Anschutz, and Dakota Arms...while those are great rifles, they don't achieve the mystic of the 52 Sporter's.
