Brightly colored, and colorful guns

While I find some of the colors cringeworthy if they bring new shooters to the world, great.

My wife only wants to shoot "pretty" guns, at least hand guns. Fortunately for me her definition of pretty is stainless revolvers with wood grips :D

Oh, and my RIA 10mm, she impulse told em to buy it because she liked the vz grips. Refuses to shoot it even with weak loads, but she still likes it.

Ive had mixed feeling in this.

Usually I’m a basic black kind of guy. Black truck, black Harley, black polo shirts.

That said, I’ve seen some cool custom ARs that I really like. The patriotic red, white and blue being a big favorite.

I guess the reality is we’re still a (mostly) free country for now. And as long as we continue to fight for our rights we’ll remain so. Sadly too many aren’t willing to fight and it’s why we’ve lost so many rights. So while I may not want a Hello Kitty AR or a colorful pistol I’ll defend anyone’s right to have one (as long as they’re not a criminal).

I see nothing wrong with guns in odd colors. I’ve built a few myself. The pink one was for a friend's daughter, the purple one for my daughter.

Sometimes something different doesn’t appeal to everyone

My youngest son really isn’t into guns but he really got excited about building his red and black AR.

Some like just a touch of color.

And then there’s just having fun. 47B94357-33DF-4998-AA35-03298D769CE8.jpeg 29F510EB-8C8E-455C-868D-3935507F1BAD.jpeg

I really don’t care for bright color gun but if that’s what it takes to get more people into guns, it can’t be a bad thing.
And just think of the fits the liberals are having I’ve the evil, pretty guns.

I have looked at a couple of handguns that have non traditional colored slides and I must say they have peaked my interest.

Gunny the leftist may be evil but you’re outright cruel.

You just keep coming up with cool looking ARs.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

My list is already way beyond my budget.....

Grrrrr and I’m not even into flashy colors so STOP .... must not look anymore....

I’m struggling with this right now. I’m trying to weigh my options on my girls first 22 rifles and I’m back and forth on getting guns that look like toys. I don’t like the thought of a real gun looking like a toy.

I’m with you, but thankfully I don’t have small kids in my home.

Why don’t you look closer at Gunny’s AR pics.

Smith & Wesson makes an AR in 22lr that you can get in various colors. PSA has AR 22lr uppers and you could do a subtle coloring. In other words there are ways of adding color that doesn’t make them look like toys (see pics above)

In our society black has long been associated with anything evil or bad by the media, in movies and in books.

Watch old western TV shows and movies. The bad guy wears a black hat and the good guy wears a white one.

More recent movies and TV programs are often filmed in a dark setting such as at night or dark building with the bad guy(s) wearing black so they are harder to see and more dangerous. The good guys and ladies always wear regular street clothes.

Watch your evening news. Do they ever show a gun of a different color (a pink one maybe) on the screen when they are reporting a shooting or pushing their anti-gun agenda?

Lack of durable material for finishes on guns has in the past severely limited our choices in colors. Bluing has always worked well with steel. For a painted type finish parkerizering has a been a long time favorite that when kept oiled is dark colored.

Our only other options have been silver plating such as nickel and hard chrome and stainless steel.

Paint is not durable and does not adhere well. That is until Ceracoat has come along. Ceracoat adheres well, is at least as durable as traditional gun salt bluing and is more rust resistant than a blued finish. Since Ceracoat is a paint it makes colors easy and practical to make and use.

A lot of folks on gun forums tend to be too tightly wrapped imo. While I have guns for self-defense I own most of them because it gives me pleasure. I enjoy going to the range and shooting. I enjoy admiring the technology and design of firearms. Black is well, boring. Adding some color changes the appeal of the gun. It is no longer a dark, evil menacing object used only for killing.

So members may know that I am currently getting the parts to build a AR as a gift for a daughter. To make this gun really stand out I am going to have it caracoated in purple. I also have itch to do a red and black combination AR build for myself. FDE is slowly growing on me.

Consider this. Is there any data showing that guns that are silver (i.e. nickel or chrome finished or stainless steel) are misused by children more than black ones? Silver colored guns have been around for many decades.

Aren't most toy guns black?

I don't associate color with safety.

I figured I’d do what I could to get them to spend time with dear old Dad and save “putting the foot down” for when they want to dress how I would rather them not.

May be a good lesson for them to learn anyhow, something dangerous doesn’t always look dangerous. Most of the time in the world we live in it’s the exact opposite.

BERSADELIC.

I guess I'm a traditionalist. Nothing against pretty guns, just not my cup of tea. However I just recently purchased a 4 5/8" Blackhawk in 45 colt. Now I understand what Skeeter and Taffin were talking about, sweet handling 6gun. So after seeing the color case hardened guns by Turnbull and Tyler, I think it's going to get sent out. Also have a old army ruger, it also needs the Turnbull treatment, custom 5 shot cylinder, octagon barrel, color case hardened, pretty much a work of art. But hey, if the ol'lady wants a pink ladysmith or a hello kitty AR, she's got it.

I have to question the notions that some folks are/will be more attracted to having/shooting guns simply because they're now available in "pretty" colors or ... look less like guns or "less threatening."

Is this what we've come to in order to grow more shooters and gun-owners? Cosmetics?

For me, I wasn't attracted to buy guns or shooting because I thought they were pretty. I didn't want any gun that looked "less threatening," "less evil," or resemble a toy. When I grew up, guns were serious tools for putting meat on the table, defending one's self, family and home, and for combat. Only later on in life did I grow to appreciate the beauty of deep bluing, fine figured walnut stocks, color case-hardening or the classic lines of John Browning's masterpiece.

A lot of new shooters don't hunt or target shoot. They most often buy for two reasons, Home defense and recreational shooting. They are more apt to buying a cool looking, or pretty gun.

I’m with you on the latter. After all, if given a choice between cool look8ng and run of the mill most will choose what they think is cool looking.

Ironically my first AR was a classic styled one with fixed stock and carry handle, I thought it was cool looking but a friend thought it was ugly. So beauty/ugly is in the eye of the beholder

I'm a bit of a traditionalist so I would never go beyond maybe a tan or dark green colored gun, but I watched a video of a lawyer who specialized in firearms law and he said that if you used a firearm in self defense and that gun was painted a bright color or some other gimmick it could influence a juror that may hurt your case. That always stuck with me and increased my reasons not to get one.

Yeah, I bet a Hello Kitty painted gun would sway a juror to convict you.
