Joined USPSA last year for the first time, and was assigned a number that started with an "A".

This year I just re-upped, but went with the 3-year deal at a reduced price.

When I did this, my member number changed from starting with an "A" to starting with a "TY". The digits following the letters stayed the same.

So what is up with this? Does "A" stand for "Annual" and "TY" stand for "Three Year" or something?

I thought it was odd and always figured that your member number would never change.

Yep, That's right.

Thanks. I still think it is strange that you number would change, but I guess I should just forget about the leading letter(s) and assume that my real number are the digits following.

A = Annual
CA = Charter Annual
TY = Three Year
FY = Five year
L = Life
RD = Regional Director

There might be others but these are the ones I have run across since I started playing USPSA.

One more that I'm aware of.
CL = Charter Life.

I used to have an ole buddy with such a number. RIP Dave.

Mine's a mid L-5 number.

Thanks guys. As I started looking at the numbers on some Practiscore data, I am starting to see the patterns now.

I thought they knew in advance how I shoot and put the A for Awful in front of my number:)

They really need to make one that starts with NS since for some reason I seem to like to shoot them.;)

Also - little tidbit - the numbers at the back stay the same UNLESS you sign up for a lifetime membership. Then the whole thing changes.

This all seems so crazy to me. Why do the numbers need to change at all? I assume there is no issue tracking historical data?

I just noticed that the state match that I was signed up for in Practiscore still had my "A" number, so I edited the entry to change it to the "TY" number.

They just change to show what level you are (annual, three year, five year). Not that it impresses anyone or anything, but it's to show you are more important than other people.
When you join as a life member you get a totally new number as they keep track of those separately.
I got L4500 this year.
