I received an email from SOG this morning showing Very Good/Excellent S&W 64 with new factory grips on sale for $279. Even though I jumped right on it, they showed out of stock. Oh well, do I really need another 4" K-frame? (OK, stupid question.)

Ugly guns are great! You can work them hard and never worry about adding to the ugly. I have an old Model 10 heavy barrel that is my woods/tractor/IDPA gun. It gets wet, dusty, muddy, and banged around all the time. I don't care, it is a tool that gets used for a job. The wear it had when I bough it was honest and I have added some more honest wear too it.

Nothing's better than a tool that is ugly from honest wear, it stands tribute to the success and trials its user(s) have overcome.

We are now into pure subjectivity.

The electroengraving , or whatever one wishes to call it , pictured in the above link is not nice. Nasty even , in my opinion.

This , however , would bring a premium in my book.

I've got several S&W and Ruger revolvers in a variety of calibers. Many are absolutely beautiful. But when I head to the range or put a revolver on my hip in the morning or pack for a revolver class, the one of these most likely to come out of the safe is a security-company-return (fugly) 4" model 64.

It balances really well in my hand and seems to me to be a perfect match for the round it fires.

Fugly? Every time I look in the mirror the less a few scratches or a little honest wear matters to me!

I kinda like those funky grips. They are unique.
Would make a good truck gun.

I just can't bear to leave any guns in the truck overnight.

Smart man! I dont understand the wisdom in leaving a loaded gun in a common burglary target.... if the guy is bold enough to break into your truck in your front yard, hes probably bold enough to use it if startled.

Judy and Janie Smith? They went to high school with me. Their status was the same back then, IIRC. ;)

I bought one of the 64’s from this sale. Came with those ugly grips, made by a French company called Trausch. Ugly, yes, and torn up from years of duty carry, but WOW are they comfortable!! And by the looks of them from the inside, they’re cut to fit round AND square butt K/L frames. They’d make great target shooting grips, IMO, to the point where I’m considering buying another pair!
