New Savage in 17hmr

My memory of cleaning mine is that it sucked lol. Might wanna hit it with foaming bore cleaner to keep the patching to a minimum.

All this talk has me wanting another one as well.....

Those are nice rifles with the rotary magazine. I had a nice 22lr with the old style magazine, and even though it shot great it didn't carry well. The protruding sheet metal mag was always where i wanted to put my hand. Being primarily a squirrel hunter and not a target shooter, I sold it.

With the rotary mag I may consider another savage rimfire in either the 17 or 22. Enjoy your new rifle.

That sounds like a 93r17btvs...I'm assuming it's stainless?

I had one for a few years, it was never as accurate as they we're suppose to be. That was likely just the particular rifle I had tho, all other reports have been extremely positive.
Everything else about the rifle was great.

I have one of these in stainless. Mine is also not as accurate as some would claim them to be. And again, it is probably just this particular rifle. But it is also VERY picky about brand of ammo. Some lots of Hornady will result in 10 shot 3" groups at 50 yrds, so not much use for anything. Some lots of Hornady will shoot groups about half that size, but that is still pretty bad. Switch to Remington or Winchester and it will be 10 shots in under 1/2" at 50 and just over an inch at 100 yrds. It is ok for p-dogs at the shorter ranges - say under 130 yds - which is what I bought it for. But I can shoot better groups with my Ruger American Predator in .223. On my last p-dog shoot, the ranges were 130 to 250 yards, so the .17 never made it out of the truck.

And as others have mentioned the magazines in this rifle are a pain to deal with.

I honestly didn't expect to have quite this much fun. This little cartrdge/rifle is such a blast. Wish I'd have gotten one years ago, but I was still on my 22 Hornet kick. Which never goes away, btw.

My first use of a .17 mag was when our neighbor asked me to mount a scope and sight in her "relatively cheap" Savage or Marlin (It was a few years ago and I don't remember the maker). I checked the bore-sighting at close range, then shot it at 100 yards and couldn't believe how accurate it was, grouping the several shots under 1 MOA!! (My CZ .22 Mag couldn't do 2 inches at that range most of the time.)

There are several videos available on-line showing people shooting groups with their 17 mags, but the one that caught my eye is the guy shooting .2" groups at 100 yards with his Anshutz sporter. That's pretty fabulous for any rimfire.

It just struck me!!! I started my shooting endeavors with a .177 Daisy BB gun and now, after some 68 years of shooting, am reverting to the .177 again...this time in a .177 HMR, but still that darned .177! What's wrong with me??? I'm going backwards instead of forward! Maybe I need help!!!

Well technically I believe the .17hmr is actually .172 (tho I could be wrong I'm pulling that out of a dusty corner)....so your still diversifying!

Well, my crosman .177 pellet rifle is just as accurate & holds groups just as tight as my .17hmr.....
Out to a whopping 15-20yrds.

Try as I may, I just can't seem to depend on it as a 200yrd gun ;)

.17 is close enough for me. I suppose I could clean the bore with a very long pipe cleaner, but have to invest a rod, I suppose.

LOL, but its like .005 different, thats enough for a marketing campaign these days :D

I had a Dewey rod, and it was about perfect. I actually just gave it to a buddy with a 17hmr bout a month ago

I just picked up a cleaning rod at Walmart for my 17. It was less than 10 bucks. So far it's got 3 cleanings under its belt and it's only bent a little, lol. Patches that I had were a little large

I use a cleaning rod made by Outer's, that I've had forever, after buying a cleaning rod for my .177 pellet rifle, way back in 2004, to try and control the pigeon population out here. It works really well, however finding cleaning patches can be a pain. I've got a jag, and a copper brush as well. I do believe I got it from Wally World. BTW I just got a Leopold Rifleman Scope for it from Wally World for $127.00, btw it normally ran $227.00.

Below are some photo's of that "bad boy", placed a bi-pod as well as a sling I had laying around in my gun room, I plan on getting a Boyd's laminated stock for it as soon as I get back from UP Michigan.

Well I just got back from a 4 week trip back to UP Michigan, just above N/E Wisconsin, and had plenty of opportunity to shoot that rifle. I used the CCI 17 grain to more or less break the gun in, had two of my sons to help with the chore. Incidentally while up in the area I had the opportunity to purchase some Hornady 20grn XTP, and a couple boxes of Winchester 17grn Varmint Polymer Tip, as well as a box of 200 17grn CCI A-17, which were supposed to be 100 fps faster than there original. Well once we placed the target out to 100 yards, which was as far as we could go due to the brush not yet being cleared, I noticed that the higher velocity CCI A17 proved to be the most accurate, placing the 7 round magazines to make one little raggedy hole, with either me or my sons doing the shooting. Note it was a very still day, and the high temperature only reached in the low 80's with very little humidity.

The least accurate was the Hornady 20grn XTP, however they would still group under 1" at that same range 100 yards, the other the Winchester and the regular CCI all shot very close to the most accurate CCI A-17, but had at least 1or2 fliers,(all well w/I a one inch group) but then again it might have been due to the barrel getting dirty. Note the trigger was really bad when we first started shooting, but lightened up considerably after the first 100 or so rounds. Note when I got home I checked the trigger with my gauge and found it breaks right at 4#'s, so I don't think I'll even mess with that. Over all I'm really satisfied with that little plinker
