Opening day of bow here in Arkansas and it rained all morning. I have had some really tough tracking jobs when rain was involved and swore off of hunting in the rain for several years now. Finally the radar was semi-clear about 4:00 P.M. and I couldn't stand it any longer. By the time I got loaded up and drove to the farm it was after 5:00. Jumped on the ATV and it wouldn't start. DEAD BATTERY. No biggie, I could drive the old Ranger to the back gate and walk to my blind. Only about a quarter mile walk. It starts to sprinkle. Only saw 4 deer going to the stand with a doe at the blind. 5:45 when I finally crawled into the tent blind. This is by one of the farms cattle feeders and the deer usually swarm the feeders at dark. Right on schedule 2 slick heads and 2 bambis come in at 6:30. The old gal was on edge, really spooky. When her head went behind a tree I drew my bow and put an arrow through her from about 20 yards and off of the hill she went. Now this hill is about a 30 degree grade. I mean a real killer and she crashed and banged off of trees for about 200 yards. I hiked back to the truck and drove as close to the blind as I could get, dug out my spotlight and started tracking. An hour later I finally had her back to the truck. I was completely worn out. Then when driving out I saw 16 head before I got off of the property. That made a total of twenty deer in 2 1/2 hours. I love to hunt them but I am getting too old for this crap. This old 67 year old man is going to find some youngsters to hunt with.

Congrats! I'm just hoping I'm able to put a bead of a pin on one this year...been a rough year for myself and the fam financially so getting out to look at deer to shoot at is a crapshoot at this point. Sucks that it has to be that way :(

Sorry to hear that. Been there years ago. Just thankful that I am retired and live in an area that has good hunting and fishing. Don't get disheartened. It will get better.

I can only keep putting one foot in front of the other. I'm frustrated but I don't feel sorry for myself. Just like everything else in life, gotta have your sh*t together before you can play!

C'mon, just don't hunt near steep hills, swamps, creeks, lakes, and ahh ...., oh forget what I said. Those seem to be the only places deer hang out.

I only shoot em when they're pointing towards the truck.

A friend of mine arrowed a buck just before dark one night and it wasn't a good hit but he had a thin and sporadic blood trail. He tracked the deer for 2.5 hours around most of the perimeter of the timber, he crossed and recrossed fence 4 or 5 times, up and down ravines, out into some pasture and back and then out again. Found the deer dead by the tailgait of his truck parked less than 100 yards from where he shot it.

I arrowed a doe too far back and waited. Found a faint blood trail that petered out quickly. Then I just followed possible trails for 3 hours without success.
I had gotten turned around going every-which way so I took a GPS heading to go straight to the truck. Halfway to the truck I stepped on the dead doe.

I'd rather be lucky than good as the saying goes. ;)

Hard to find a flat spot in the Ozarks of Northern Arkansas. Pull up a Topo of the Sylamore WMA in the Ozark National Forest south of Mtn. Home. Pretty gnarly.
