My son was introduced for the first real time (by me) to trap shooting using his handsome Mossberg 500 with vent rib and a selection of choke tubes. This gun he bought from a long time friend wanting to fund a revolver. For $200,, son received the gun in pristine condition, a box of ammo, a cleaning kit, a soft carry case, the extra factory chokes and as said, the factory vent rib. I threw for him at the club range, and lo, he hit 90% first time out!
Bad part: he used all his ammo. Asked me if I could keep an eye out for 12 gauge 2 3/4 inch 1 ounce 7 1/2 or 8 shot. Said Cabela's has an OK deal (he thinks) for about $5.50 a box.
Anyone aware of any of the big outfits or some of our other haunts besting that price point maybe?
I used to load 12 gauge,, but my old Texan FW back i the early 80's is long gone. I'm not a frequent shotgunner though, and suggested that he's be better off at this point buying his ammo for now.
Thanks friends, and good things hoped for all.
Don.

Don't know where you are located, but our local Dunham's have had several sales on Remington Gun Club target shells for about $50 a flat of 10. Someone local last week had Federal Top Gun target shells for $45 a flat last week. I have occasionaly ordered from Academy Sporting Good's on good deals on AA shells also.

Other option is learning to reload. Top quality shells for around $3 a box if you buy your components right.

Congratulations! I'll bet he goes crazy nuts with SKEET! Trap is a difficult sport and was my bane. My best skeet game was 23. Crash, but I had a heck'of'a good time shooting. He deserves a pat on the back! You Too!

12 ga is super popular, and is on sale constantly, so finding local stuff at or near your price point should not be an issue. Wal Mart and other big outlets can be great sources of target ammo for his 500, and on line sources will also have good prices as well.

Nice job getting him into the shooting sports! Hopefully he will share his enthusiasm with a few more younger folks and spread the bug amongst them as well

Stay safe!

Say thank you all for the help. We do have a Dunham's locally. I too will check the big boxes like Walmart. The days of $3.50 a box if bought by the case of 10 boxes close to dove season are gone. Last time I got that deal was 6 years ago. Don.

I did tell my son what a great score he posted. I told him that for me, trap was like bowling. Some days I just killed it,, folowed by a stretch of "well what was that??" Loving his interest folks. Don

Plenty of online places to buy ammo cheap and delivered; try Academy Sports, Cabela's with a discount code; Able's, and a lot of others.

I would second gun.deals as well, and also look at ammoseek. I'm sure deals will start cropping up as we approach the silly season (thanksgiving/black friday/christmas/new years.)

If you're wanting to try and pack as much as possible into as few dollars spent, also keep an eye out for discounted gift cards (gun.deals is showing cabela's gift cards for 13% to almost 17% off.) A good price, a couple % off by a discounted gift card, a discount code at a vendor, and some cash back from places like ebates or active junky, can all add up. Finally keep an eye out for manufacturer's rebates. The trick is to be able to hold off until the stars align, and then go all-in.

Perhaps he can go in on a bulk group buy at the trap club (or ask members there where they buy). When I buy in low bulk volume (maybe 10-15 flats at a time), I either hit a Cabela's sale on their Herter's ammo, or go to Academy online who has free delivery on orders over $25. Now, the UPS/Fedex guy hates me when I do this, but at my old house, they would bring it into the garage. On sale, ammo good enough for basic trap can be bought ~ $5 to $5.50 per box.

Reloading if he is going to shoot any volume really brings the cost down.

Watch Sam's club. I bought 5 cases for 39 dollars each last year. Was an end of season sale so I'm guessing it was fall or winter. (They had throwers and clays too so I'm not sure what "season" would be). I went the next week in the truck to buy a "few more". But the whole pallet was gone.

They discontinued the ammo sales at Sam's, never to return - or so they said.

As did I in central Florida. One friend in Jacksonville went in and bought 63 flats (all they had) and they haven't been back since.

Hmm. I went last weekend to see if they had any at full price, then I would have watched for the sale. They didn't though. So maybe they did stop carrying it ( They did have a 40 dollar sports afield pistol safe), but I had not seen it there in 10 years before last year. So perhaps it was just over run? I would have bought a pallet myself, but I was in an SUV and had the typical 500 dollars in groceries to stuff in it already. The Clay's were 3 dollars I think. But the boxes looked pretty abused.

The Wally worlds around here sell for slightly more; add in sales tax and you are almost at $6/box for some of the crappiest ammo ever made (except for the Winchester Universals and Super Speeds). If you belong to Good Sam's club and have a Gander Outdoors near you (one should be in western panhandle by now) you can buy Remington Gun Clubs all day long for $48/flat; $50 IIRC if not a GS member. You also get .05 off per gallon at Pilot and Flying J gas stations.

I use the 12ga bulk packs from WalMart unless I care a lot about my specific scores which is seldom. My store usually has the Winchester or Federal 100ct boxes for $21 and change. Most of the time you can choose 7.5 or #8. The bulk packs are 3 dram, 1-1/8oz shot. The Winchester bulk pack ammo is usually dirtier for my gun. I choose the Federal if possible. The 20ga is the same price if that's what you need.

Lately I have been stocking up on the Winchester AAHS in 28ga. My WalMart store has them on rollback for just over 9 bucks per box. I am getting the 28ga cheaper while I can and then use them for reloads later.

Good luck on his new found pleasure :)

Academy sells those 28s all day long for that price, with free delivery over $25. Winchester also puts out a $2/box rebate twice a year good for a total of 5 flats. So, buying Win 28s at $9 minus $2 for rebate and then selling the empties for at least .12/ea ($3/box), drops your cost to $4/box for WIN AA in 28 without the hassle of reloading......... jes sayin'.

Try Gander Outdoors, they give a discount to their club members. I do not know what Gun Clubs go for in your
area, but In Michigan I'm paying $4.74 / box.

Same price in Florida. Even without being a member, the cost is less than the stuff from Wally World

I remember you saying that before George. I haven't seen a coupon yet nor anything on the box. There isn't an Academy in this town, but I might order some! Where did you find the coupon etc? Are you saying the larger corrugated box of ten is the same as a flat?

I reload all my shotshells, but if I were buying I would buy AA'S or Remington STS and sell the once fired empties for 5 cents a piece. This way you get a great shell for trap etc and a little rebate. Also the young lad will makes friends at the local club selling the hulls.:thumbup:
