Steyr M9A1

There are no negatives. If you like striker fired polymer guns, you will like a Steyr. Outstanding trigger and good ergonomics.
If you plan to carry it check out the S9-A1. Last winter there was a factory rebate, $75 I think, maybe they will offer it again.

I like lots of preloded magazines for range use. The Steyr mags were $40. For that reason I bought a Glock instead of Steyr. I did think Steyr was a better gun in every way. It's uglier than a Glock which is great because instruments of death should be ugly.

Self-defense Sport Utility guns, post-Pittsburgh massacre.

That Steyr has so many excellent reports but nobody I'm around seems to be aware of them. Gun buddies are very seasoned 40-45-50-65 year olds and quite experienced with numerous types.

The Steyr M9 had some reliability problems in the past caused by the extractor. Once they modified its shape a little and putted a roll pin in the slide under the rear sight, the gun is performing great. I've never had the opportunity to shoot a Steyr M9 but it seems everyone has it, loves it.

Early models did but could be upgraded from what I have read. It would be very unlikely that any of those would still be in stock. Look for the roll pin under the rear sight just to be sure it is the newer generation.
I'm sure old examples can be upgraded with the new extractor. Note that not all the older examples had problems. Many of them still run 100% with the old extractor.
First batch had safety inside the triggerguard ahead of the trigger. I guess those were pre A1.
The trigger guard safety and the loaded chamber indicator that protrudes from the back of the slide are still offered as options by request. For example the L9-A1 imported here in Italy have both these features and they also have conventional three dots sights. It depends from how the importer decides to order them from Steyr.

These guns have intrigued me since the first time I saw one. Would definitely shoot one given the opportunity.

By the looks of the grip angle and low bore axis it looks like it would be a great shooter.

I have an original M9 version and love the ergonomic shape of the grip frame and the trapezoidal sights, though they do take a little getting use to. Like that there's a safety on the gun but don't care for it's location inside the trigger guard or for how it is put into use. The trigger is nicer than a comparable Glock 17 I have with a shorter take-up and a quick release. Overall a very decent 9mm. service pistol.

IMO very high quality equal to Glock or HK. No downside except limited 10 round magazine. You may or may not like the sights but they can be easily changed. Their customer service is excellent equal to Glock.
IMO they are higher quality than Glock, and I like Glocks. The M9's have 17 round mags, it is the compact S9 that has 10 round mags and it is annoying. I carry a 17 round spare mag for my S9.
I did have an issue with the trigger reset on my S9 a few months ago. Called customer service, they said it was a spring and to send it in. Rather than send in the gun I pulled out the modular fire control and sent it in. I then took the fire control out of my M40 and put it in the S9 so I could keep carrying it. Modular design is awesome, you would think someone would copy it (Sig). Anyway got the fire control back in about a week good as new, no charge.

I've always been fascinated by these guns but have never seen one in the wild to lay hands on. They've always seemed reasonably priced also.

I examined both early and later sample. The ergonomics and sights are superior to Glock. Given obscurity if you patient you should be able to find used sample for about $350.

I feel bad for it's designer, who went on to design the caracal. 2 cool designs, 1 went to a company that doesn't know how to market a firearm, the other to a company that cannot make a firearm. Come on Wilheilm, 3rd time is the charm! (perhaps with ruger. they can market, they can manufacture, they need a decent striker gun.)

His third design is the BB Techs BB6 9mm pistol. Pretty interesting compact polymer pistol. Here in Italy the price is too high for that kind of pistol and that fact is killing sales.

I have a couple of them. The ergonomics are better for smaller hands, but in my hands the Glock actually feels and shoots better. I really detest the trapezoidal sites, and have replaced them with more traditional sights. They’re a decent alternative if the Glock doesn’t tickle your fancy, but for me a G19 Gen5 is a better choice.

Thanks for all of your honest responses. I'll just shoot what I own for now. Something will come along seeking my credit card! LOL
