An associate of mine recently showed me this pistol. Said he received it from the estate of a man of German decent back in 1965. Want's to sell it, and I really want to buy it, but don't know what to offer him at all. Looks like a custom made gun. The only marking on it at all is the number 1944 stamped on the grip butt. It's a rimfire single-shot in really good condition. But boy, is it unique or what? Anyone got any ideas about its provenance?

I have no idea what that is, but I would definitely want to buy it also. Just a thought, he could take it into a few local gun shops, offer to sell it and see what they offer. The fit and finish looks absolutely perfect.

Then offer him 5%-10% more.

If you're into the steam punk thing, that's your gun right there.

Looks like .22 LR. Could be a one-off, but it has the lines of a Walther. I'd guess Walther target pistol, not sure about the Allen heads, might put the date late than 1944-that's probably a serial number. Is it solid steel or Zamak with a barrel liner?

*drool*.... Are you trying to get us to offer to buy it?

Just a guess, but I don't think local gun shops are likely to offer more than a couple of hundred dollars, simply because nobody is going to know what it is. But boy, is that purdy!

Also... I'm not an expert by any means, but I do doubt the Walther idea. I seem to recall seeing some Walther break action single-shots, but... not like that.

That’s pretty stinkin cool. I would go after that one myself. First question, is what he wants for it. If he gives you a number, go from there. If he wants you to give him a number, figure out what your willing to pay and offer him about 80% so that he can say that’s not enough then y’all haggle to your number.

I think it's beautiful. I wonder if it's a ComBloc-origin gun... the Russians and others had some interesting target pistols that are odd and rarely seen in the west.

Regardless, I would conjecture that it was built for ISSF 50 meter pistol - a game in which the competitor is required to reload after every shot.

For a gun that your buddy got in 1965 the bluing on it is in phenomenal condition. It seems a little dull overall but I can't see a single tool mark anywhere. All the metal work looks pretty incredible.
Given the detail on things like the breech face, and some of the marks visible inside when the barrel is broken open I would tend to lean against it being a 100% custom gun. Seems more like a top of the line target offering from some manufacturer.

The rear sight is an interesting setup. It is used as a pivot for the locking lever. How the heck would you even adjust that for windage?
Regardless, I think I would offer whatever your buddy would take for it if for nothing more than to have that in my collection.

If George Lucas had run across this thing in 1973, I feel pretty sure it would have shown up in one of the Star Wars movies. Has that interesting blend of old-timey and space-agey.
Kinda was thinkin the same thing lol.

Yeah the more I look at it, the more I want it!
If he wasnt asking 2x its weight in gold I'd pay the man and be on my way... I guess the big question becomes why is he selling it? Getting rid of clutter? Or needs money?
