Like all good things, this one comes with some to to. Here's the backstory..
So I go to a gun shop in Fargo, to look at a new carry piece. While I'm browsing. this lady comes in to sell a revolver. I'm really only half paying attention to the conversation. But the short of it is that it's apiece she got from her father, and she wants to sell it. She knows zero, and I hear the guy mention it's a colt python. So now I'm actually paying attention. From a side glance - it looks to be in great shape. He goes on a spiel about well, it's old, and maybenot much market for it, everyone wants auto pistols now. So he makes a show of looking in a book and comes up with a price of $400. of course she asks if that's a lot, (since all of the other guns in the store are tagged at full retail) and he says, well, the other guy that works here might take an interest and he could maybe take it off your hands for a few bucks more, and to come back in a bit when hes' back. (I know little about colts, but know they usually carry a lot higher price tag than this guys talking.) So the lady leaves the store. and the moment the door closes the guy starts to actually laugh about it to a co worker. For some reason this just sent me nuts. no idea why, none of my business. However, I was insulted on the lady's behalf. So I left to catch her in the parking lot, where she's still getting to her car. I walk up to her and tell her that they lowballed her by a long shot. It's worth waaay more than that. and that I'd offer double what they had, right here, right now. Told her it was still a low offer, but that was all I had on me in cash. Well, she accepted without hesitation.

The bad part, was that I walked into the store, right up to the clerk, with the python. and said, if he hadn't been such a jack wagon (well, I used a different set of wording to be sure) and not tried to screw someone so blatantly bad, he would have made 2 sales that day, as I was going in to try a few carry guns and likely buy one (they have a range on site, and many firearms to rent/try) but as it was. I not only bought the python, I was also going to shop somewhere else.

Sooo... now if you're still with me. Here's what I got for $800. Thoughts? Hoping I didn't get all sanctimonious on them for nothing.

The only wear marks I can find is one small one by the muzzle on the right side of the gun, a light turn line. and an odd surface scratch not through the bluing on the right side right in front of the cylinder.

I'm hoping it's not been refinished and that the grips are original. The serial number comes back to 1967, and while she did not have the original box or papers. she does have the original bill of sale to her father from 1973 from the US army provost marshall. Fort Carson, Co. Which I thought was kinda cool. IMG_0085.JPG IMG_0086.JPG IMG_0088.JPG IMG_0060.JPG

I wouldn't have even walked back in and wasted my time rubbing it in his face And certainly would never walk back in there knowing what a crook he is. I know dealers have to make a profit. More than most of us realize, but trying to screw somebody that bad to me is just wrong. Granted, the lady should have done a little homework and also maybe to her father for not letting her know something of the value. At least you did disclose that is was worth more and then she was able to make a real decision having some information He could have given her 1k and turned around and make a quick $500 but greed got in his way. I love it when the screwer becomes the screwed. I keep a list of all of my guns with what I've paid for them and what the going market is just in case I was to die unexpectedly. My girlfriend will dispose of my collection and my sons will get the money. They aren't the least bit interested in guns, but I don't want my stuff to just be sold for nothing. I also have an agreement with my local dealer who is also one of my good friends and he has agreed if anything ever happens to me, he will give her what I paid for anything she takes him. I absolutely hate to see someone taken advantage of.

Here's the thing- she was happy with the $800 even though you told her she could get a lot more if she looked for a buyer. They were going to flat-out rape her on the price; you were honest and gave her a choice. Everyone walked away happy. You got a screaming deal for being a decent human being, so I say kudos to you.

You did nothing wrong.
I agree. You told her that is was worth more than you offered, she still wanted to sell it to you. She has her money, double what she would have gotten if she just went back to the gun shop. She might have just wanted it gone. I would sleep well tonight, and be out first thing in the morning trying it out!

I did tell her it was still worth way more than I had on hand to offer, she just needed to find the right buyer with the money. But she honestly seemed okay with what I had.
Looks like a win/win to me!

I don't think you "screwed" her at all, given that you disclosed that the gun was worth somewhat more. The pics seem to show that it isn't in top-tier collector condition and as it was missing the box that would also turn off some hard core investor/collectors. Around here, that gun would be priced in the $1200-1500 range.

For a shooter-grade Python, it is nice and the deal was good for both parties, IMO. Good job, son.

And don't feel bad about rubbing it in those guys stupid faces, I would have done the same thing.:)

Looks like you got a great deal and did the right thing with the owner!
Got my first just like your 4" in 77 for 350.00. Carried it for a few years on patrol before they switched to autoloaders in 94.
Got a 6" brother to it a few years ago for 1000 from a private party no box or papers.

Yeah, a 'fair' price to offer would hve been close to $1600.
But, you only had the $800 on you, and it made her happy.

Now, should you perform an act of contrition, an act of penance? That's up to you. Maybe drop a couple hundred off as a donation to the VFW, or the Lady's Aid Society, or, for that matter, upgrade your NRA membership.

That's a sweet Python. For 2¢, let me recommend a set of Hogue cocobolo grips. Mind, you really need some "stuff" to go with that snake. Like a rug for when it's in the safe so the other guns don't get jealous and scuff it up when nobody's looking.

Back when I had a Python, I had a case I customized for just that. Held speedloaders, a teeny screwdriver for the sight, and so on.

Seems I heard/read some scuttlebutt that Colt was thinking about reintroducing the Python. Back in 1980/81 I was anxious to get one of their newly introduced 8" Royal blued Pythons in .22 rimfire caliber. But alas, they never made it to any distributors shelves.

Nice pickup but there's a lot of fundamental issues with the entire transaction.

What are the issues?

I second the motion/question. The only hesitation I have here is possibly the go back into the store part. Might have passed on that ; I'm pretty sure that the shop guy did not experience an epiphany as a result.
Addendum : The return to the store was not part of the "entire transaction" per se , so it does not count.
