.22 Question

I’ve been shooting for almost 60 years. I consider myself to have more than average knowledge of firearms. Never knew about .22 pistol ammo.

The fact that he was looking for a specific pistol ammo in Wallyworld, suggest he does not have a clue.

He shot go where they offer olympic grade .22 target ammo. Eley, RWS, Lapua come to mind. Not going to happen at Walmart.

I think my state has a law that pistol ammo cannot be sold to anyone under 21. Don't know for sure because because my favorite gun store is in Iowa. Haven't bought ammo in Illinois in years.

IMG_2763.JPG Thought I had some of that "Long Rifle Pistol Ammo" around here and I found it. You have to read the fine print down near the bottom to see that it's "Long Rifle Standard Velocity Solid Point" but that's the only spot on the entire box where it says "Long Rifle". So it would seem that someone new to shooting or to rimfires could get confused and I could see why. Even the end flaps give no information other than "Pistol Match Competition". IMG_2765.JPG Wouldn't expect to see that one at Wal-Mart, though.

There's plenty .22LR pistol ammo around, even here in the UK. I've seen these ones for sale locally:

I bought out several of the Big 5 stores near me that had the RWS match ammo in stock for ages..and they started marking it down. I think I have a .50 cal ammo can of it now in Rifle and Pistol match. Same goes for the Aguila rifle and pistol match, at least a .50 can can of that, too.

There are a few pistols, and rifles for that matter, that are chambered for 22 short only. The High Standard Olympic is one and it is a pleasure to shoot.

A neighbor of mine has one of those little "tip-up" barrel pistols that only takes .22 Shorts. I keep a few on hand so if I have to trap a varmint ('possum, 'coon, etc.) in a "live" trap, I can dispose of it humanely and quietly.
As for the Longs, I haven't seen any of those in at least 10 years.

I've seen some .22 Longs in about the last month and now I can't recall where.... But I was in a local Runnings; Home, Farm & Outdoor retailer this afternoon and spotted a good supply of .22 shorts. The rimfire ammo market is much better than it was a few years ago. There may have been some .22 Longs at Runnings but I wasn't looking for them; just glancing at ammo as I went down the aisle.
