What Pistol do you carry.

S&W Shield 9mm, two spare mags and a Chris Reeve Sebenza is what I carry 90% of the time. The other 10% I carry a G19. Both are carried in a CompTac Minotaur IWB holster.

Today, a Kimber CDP Ultra 45 acp in an IWB leather holster and a Smith 43C 22LR snubby in my front pocket.

Tomorrow, hard to say what will be on my belt, but the 43C is always in my pocket.

Great thread! Read every reply. I'll preface answering the OP's questions by stating this first. I'm a reloader that routinely shoots between 500-1000 centerfire handgun rounds per month through a number of different firearms. When at the range I almost exclusively practice standing up (sitting down only for chrono or specifically working up loads). I routinely shoot between 25 (and out to torso sized plate steel) at 100 yards.I started out carrying a 9mm P89 in "my yut" (before I reloaded) because I was convinced I needed the round capacity in case it was ever deployed. Admittedly not the ideal choice for a CCW and carried only in the colder months due to its size.

Fast forward a few years and uncounted thousands of reloads later in larger calibers and I found I shot revolvers better than any of the semi's I owned. Add to that my basic philosophy on capacity had changed.

My philosophy changed to 1) I'm better served by a gun I shoot well regardless of capacity and 2) I'm convinced that in the event I ever have to deploy my firearm that I will be the more committed and much better trained participant in the encounter. I base that on the fact that I want my loved one(s) and myself to survive more than the criminal wants my wallet. I know for SURE I'm all in. I don't for a minute believe I'll be in a protracted gun fight that will necessitate me having to reload numerous times during the engagement. I also expect the untrained criminal intend on getting my wallet etc. is at a distinct disadvantage regardless of what gun he carries or its capacity as it's doubtful he's been to a range and is as proficient with a gun that's probably stolen as I am with mine. Lastly, add to that the stress of finding out without warning that the intended victim is now preemptively and accurately (hopefully) returning fire and I doubt the encounter will last more than 15 - 30 seconds at the extreme end as I'm supposed to be an easy mark with no risk involved. That's a long way to get to the OP's questions of what and why but hopefully gives the rationale.

Warm weather under a shirt: 6-shot SP 101 in 327 Fed Mag. in an IWB holster at the 2 oclock position with 1 Star speed loader in a pocket.

Cold weather under coat/vest or sweater: The SP above or a Ruger New Model Vaquero in .45 Colt in high riding Pancake holster by Simply Rugged at the 3 oclock position (surprisingly concealable) with one speed loader in a pocket (to keep the rounds organized).

I carry these,Kahr CM .45 ACP, Ruger LCR.38 SPL+P, S&W 638-3,442-2 .38 SPL+P's Taurus 85 UL .38 SPL,S&W M&P 40 Shield.

When I am on duty, I carry an Argentine 9mm Hi-Power, with a Kel-Tec P-11 as a backup. Off duty it's either my Hi-power or my Essex/Colt 1911a1 and a Kel-Tec P3-at .380.

When I carry a pistol it is a Glock 30S. Other times it is a 44 or 45 revolver [I always also carry a NAA Black Widow in 22 mag].

Daily duty use: Glock 34.
Ofc duty: LC9 or LCP II depending on what I’m wearing.

I dislike carrying a gun with potential energy stored in the firing control system. Hence, my main carry gun is an H&K P30SK DA/SA semi-auto. Occasionally, I'll carry and S&W M642 when the H&K is too large.

With a bit of practice, the DA trigger pull becomes a standard and a no brainer.

I routinely carry either a S&W 6906 (12 rds) or 3913 (8 rds) as my usual EDC piece. The 3913 is a bit easier to conceal with my belly band holster when wearing a tucked in shirt. And it is often my "travel gun" when I visit states with mag capacity restrictions. 3rd gen S&W 9mm's like these have been my primary EDC guns for over two decades; I'll take one of them over one of the new striker fired Tupperware guns any day!

Used to be a full size Glock year round (17 for years, then 19X). Recently (September on) it's been a sig P226 Legion SAO. I prefer the SAO trigger and the Sig will be my daily, year round.

Maybe, when it's way hot and the weight bugs me, I may switch to a Glock 26 for a bit.

Colt Detective Special primary and Rock Island M206 as backup. Both have OWB Holsters with 6 rounds back up each. Plenty for me as at 7 yards I can hold 4 to 5 inch groups. Yes I have several several semi autos, but these revolvers are by far the most comfortable and concealable for me.

I started with the Glock 26, occasionally pocket carrying a Smith & Wesson J-Frame, but mostly carrying the G26 IWB in a hybrid holster.

Then my wife had surgery and couldn't operate the slide on her Glock 42, so I gave her the J-Frame and I started pocket carrying her Glock 42 - a lot.

When she reclaimed her G42 this past summer, I went back to the G26, but really missed pocket carrying the G42. I tried pocket carrying the J-Frame, but after pocketing the slim G42, the J-Frame was annoyingly fat at the cylinder.

Then I found a great sale on the Ruger LCP (Gen 1) for well under $200, and I don't think I've carried my G26 since.

My edc is a S&W 640 Pro Series. It has had a deluxe action job performed by D.O. Reichard. Anytime I leave the house, it's with me.

This, as of today, because I am unable to predict the future.



If I absolutely KNEW that I would never need more than six shots in a self-defense situation, then I'd love to carry something small with limited capacity. But until then, I will be prepared.

Anyone else find the grip surface of the new shield 2.0 in 45PC , a bit too scratchy? It really can't be used with most of my holsters inside the waistband because it will scratch the heck out of your waist area, I think a little sandpaper is going to be necessary to calm it down. I have the PC version and it's like a small 1911 in size and capacity. It is just lighter and easier to maintain, but gives you 8 rounds of 45 for near the same size as the 9mm. I love the gun otherwise, and my PM9 is still much more carry friendly, but a 45 is still nice to have in your waist.

I find my 2.0 Compact a bit abrasive but not so much that I've done anything about it yet. I may apply a little sandpaper on the skin side of the grip at some point, though. My Shield is an original version and the grip isn't as good in hand, but it definitely feels better against my abdomen.

I’m not a G-Koolaid fan. Any gun that forces you to pull the trigger to break down and clean is a ND waiting to happen. You also need to know every single round you fire comes with a lawyer attached. Speaking from experience.
Most gunfights are 3 rounds, within 3’, in 3 seconds.
I also am a firm believer in bringing the best gun you can put lead on target with to the situation. For me that’s a S&W mod 10-4 3” sq butt.

Used to carry a G26 in a Concealment Express IWB. Now I carry a Ruger Security 9 in a Concealment Express IWB.

I've worked my way through about 4 different firearms to arrive at my daily carry piece... a Kahr CW9 (or CM9, depending on my wardrobe.) My first plastic pistol... I bought it so I could try one, deciding before I even fired it I wasn't going to like it. What I found was a pistol that fit my hand like a glove, that I could draw and present quickly and effectively, with 100% reliability, and at a low cost (in the event the pistol is lost.) My penchant for the.45ACP not withstanding... I tried a Kahr P45... but found it was not the same pistol, and traded it for... another CW9. I am not concerned with the effectiveness of the 9mm vs .45ACP debate, 8 rounds of 9mm on target should do the trick, otherwise I'm in deeper doo-doo than ever...

Starting the question I asked, above! And adding the why.

A purpose, I think is the first question you should ask yourself.

Once you dress, and travel anywhere, out of your home, you are open to any danger, or risk, any one has been subject to, in these United States, ever!

If these risks are out there, they can be duplicated.

So read up, on the shootings, attacks, risks that can be researched.
And place yourself, and your handgun, on that spot.
So? You do not have time to do that, or the inclination.

As I am retired for quite a while, let us start with retired but still mobile, as a first group.

I can, and do, carry a fairly large, but not to heavy, Glock 19. Takes 15 rounds in the magazine, one in the breach, 16 total.
A spare G17 magazine (more for malfunctions that for an extended gun fight, but it could happen) next to the spare mag, on the opposite side to the 4 o'clock positioned pistol. Also next to that spare mag. An expensive LED flash light.

The Kydex holster is tight, secure, and very fast. High neck Tee shirt keeps the pistol from the skin, but the Glock is not too abrasive either.

What I call a Florida shirt, hides it well. Ammunition for the last few years, Ranger T Winchester 147g HP. Very accurate. Medium recoil, goes deep.

Modifications? TruGlo night sights/polished internals, 4 or 5lb release.
Glock factory extended slide release (they don't call it that!) the mag release on the Gen 4, dug into my second finger, cut that corner off.

If you look at the Police shootings over the last few years, bursts of 4 and 5 rounds are common, if that gives you a better chance of survival, in a confrontation. We should maybe copy that? That would leave you with 5 or 6 rounds left? And that is why you carry 16. I have never had a misfire of any nature with either one of my two carry Glock 19s, I only use factory ammunition.

I feel I have covered all bases, to the best of my ability, with out going wild.

For IWB a EAA Witness small frame compact 40. When I can't carry that I pocket carry a Bersa Thunder 380. On rare occasions a PK380. When hiking I usually have a Witness FS in 10mm.
