At 50’, it would be devastating from a choked gun. ie: imp-cyl or tighter.
First homicide I was ever involved with as a police officer was where a home owner confronted an armed burglar in a detached garage, perp was shot in face at 20’ with #4’s. DRT, and perp was facially unidentifiable.

I wouldn’t deer hunt with it, (not legal), but for intended purpose it’s quite effective. When it was legal for waterfowl, it was an awesome goose and late season mallard Load.

Can those loads kill a determined attacker? Sure it can.

Would I depend on it to protect my hearth and home? After 28 years and counting in LE, with numerous handgun, rifle and shotgun homicide and suicide scenes visited over the years... no.

I prefer shot designed to be used defensively, with pellets of sufficient mass and velocity to penetrate and stop a crook at ranges and angles that are reasonably expected to be encountered. I use Federal #1 buck in my personal 870, along with some Winchester Segmenting Slugs in the sidesaddle. I find #1 buck to be the perfect balance of penetration and pellet count, etc. Now 0, 00, 000 are also effective, with 00 being the yardstick against which all anti-personnel shotgun rounds are measured. Some agencies use #4 buck, but I'm not a fan of that lighter pellet.

#2 is a large bird shot, and under the right circumstances can certainly create a devastating, fatal wound. Even a load of Club/Target #9 will cause massive injuries when used in favorable conditions. I certainly don't want to get blasted with either one, myself.

With all of the variables that every shooting has, for me I probably won't be using under optimum circumstances... and in such a situation I just don't want to leave even more things to chance.

It looks like you have a cool little footnote in self-defense history with that box of shells.

Stay safe!

You ever shoot a bb gun? The pellets are a bit smaller than bb's.

A quick Google suggests that ordinary #2 birdshot does 1330 fps, and can do 8-10" in ballistics gel. Probably much worse in "non-uniform" media, as small pellets have a hard time with bones and such.

This is going to be a little less, and I'm actually a bit surprised that it was a thing. It's probably adequate indoors, and especially if you are worried about penetration, but it wouldn't be my first choice. It just seems a little limited considering we are talking about a 12 gauge here (which would be fine if that was the point).
