.41 Mag Association

I hope everyone had a good holiday and has recovered. this is what I have in .41
My Redhawk .41 mag. It's a little different but fun to shoot.
l am glad to find this group!View attachment 813017

Looks just like mine! I’ve been happy with the loads I’ve worked up with it. It handles Buffalo Bore 230 well, averaging 1300 fps, 299 power factor; that load I s more than uncomfortable however, will save that for Henry .41 mag carbine (which is a kick to play with). For Redhawk, hand load with True Shot 265 grain averages almost 1100 fps (not the max load) — 289 power factor and quite manageable with a more extended, less sharp recoil — my choice for a heavier load.

(The carbine makes over 1600 fps with Hornady 190 FTX, with mid load of A #9, and over 1500 with Swift A-frame 210, again with mid load of #9. I haven’t chronographed the BB load yet.)

I recently found this forum and think it is great, after reading some of the entries I have put a Charter Arms 41 Mag Pug on order thru my LGS. I have been shooting 41 mag since the early 90's when I traded a Glock 21 for a Ruger Redhawk 5.5" with Hogue grips and have never looked back. I have added a few since then, a Ruger Redhawk 7.5', a 15" MGM barrel for my Encore pistol and recently a Freedom Arms Model 83 6". Thank you to everyone on this forum as it keeps the caliber alive

I use the .41 Special in the Taurus Tracker line of handguns because they have a shorter than standard cylinder. They will take most factory loads but there are a lot of cast bullets that have too long a nose.

Thank you for the advice, I picked my Charter Arms 41 Mag Pug up today, I did not have time to shoot it, but I like it. The action is a little rough so have been working it to smooth it out. The single action pull is pretty nice, 3lbs 9 oz. The double action is going to require some attention @ 15 lbs 2 oz.

With the addition of the Charter Arms 41 Mag Pug I realized that I now had accumulated three short barreled 41’s. The top one is a Ruger Redhawk, the middle is a Taurus 415 stainless steel and the bottom one is my new Charter Arms Mag Pug.

...NICE!!

I have the Ruger Redhawk and have been looking for a Taurus Titanium snubbie to go with my 4" and 6" Trackers...

It's a new year (nearly), in a new house, with a new sixgun chambered in a new cartridge.

Crappy cell phone pic of my entry, dirty after it's inaugural shooting. Also the first shots fired on the new property. This has been a long time coming. Always wanted a .41 but never came together with one. Came real close several years ago with an early fluted Bisley but it had scratches all over the frame where some dummy tried to push the trigger pin out without first depressing the gate spring. It was otherwise minty, still wish I'd bought it. Anyway, these showed up at CDNN and after having one in my cart for a month, I pulled the trigger. It's now wearing the XR3 and maple burl grips from my 50th anniversary .44 Blackhawk but will probably end up with a Hunter or Bisley grip.

Still a thing of beauty and just awesome - your new property and all. Happy New Year!!

...problem with that gun is that is the only one you "need"....fortunately you can "want" as many as you would like...

Beautiful grips....

Congrats on all the new things going on in your life; especially the new house and of course the new Ruger Blackhawk in .41 Magnum! Love those grips too!

A month ago, I picked up a 98% condition 3-Screw Ruger BH in .41 Magnum; that makes 3 in the safe right now. But this one is a 4 digit serial number and in the 4-5/8" bbl. that I've come to prefer in Ruger SA's.

I've run most of my old loads through it, but hadn't chrono'd any of them over the years. Our #1 son, visiting from NY brought his Chrony along and we did some work with a number of guns, the new .41 3-Screw among them.

So here's the load: Lyman's 410459 cast from wheel weights, lubed with 50-50 and sized to 0.411". From a rested position on the 25 yd. line it'll shoot into just over an inch. I like 7.5 gr.'s of Unique with a firm roll crimp which gave me 1008 fps and an ES of 35. A keeper of a load, as you'll no doubt agree. BTW, Hornady's 210 gr XTP with the same powder load, shoots every bit as well, but we didn't chrono it. Also 8.0 gr of Herco has the same POI and 'feels' the same in recoil, but again, no chrono data.

I’ve been studying pictures and reading everything I could find in an effort to gain insight and knowledge before embarking on this journey. Of course, somewhere along the way I picked up copies of Single Action Sixguns, Big Bore Sixguns and Book of the 44. Next came “The Custom Revolver” by Hamilton Bowen. I studied, and I studied some more.

As I pondered the seemingly endless combinations from which to choose I always came back to the same thing, my very own Perfect Packin’ Pistol. Try as I might, the three 44 Specials in the safe are close, but not quite perfect. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t trade my S&W 696 for anything. And my Flat Top Bisley is a terrific companion in the Pennsylvania deer woods. But they’re not Perfect Packin’ Pistols. At least, not to me.

Some time ago I started to collect parts, sometimes based on a vision, sometimes on a whim. First came the Bisley grip frames, hammers and triggers. Then I happened upon an Anniversary .357 Blackhawk. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with it but I knew I had to have it….just in case. Things really started to take shape when I acquired an S&W M57 barrel from a member here. Then came the delivery of my Rough Country sights.

Finally, I had all of the pieces, but what to do? No more excuses. It was time go. So I packed up the parts, pointed my Harley west and headed out for LaGrange Ohio and Andy Horvath.

I decided that a Li’l Ruger in 41 Magnum was my Perfect Packin’ Pistol. I couldn’t be happier with the results.

Because I was using a ribbed barrel, there was a certain amount of welding and contour work needed at the frame/barrel junction.

I was a little concerned about whether the XR3-RED grip frame would mate well with my XXXL hands so I brought a set of Bisley parts with me just in case. But they were not needed. The rounded aluminum plowhandle fits my hand perfectly and the reduced weight is a welcome benefit.

For my eyes, the Bowen Rough Country sights are hard to beat. Very compact but with a superb sight picture.

A Super Blackhawk hammer rounds out the package, lowering the hammer spur just enough to make for a comfortable reach.

The trigger pull is a work of art, clean, crisp break with none of the typical Ruger creep.

Overall, I couldn't be happier. Now I just need to find some gunleather.

Sorry, I'm new here. What is the barrel length of that sweet looking revolver?

Well I just got back from the range. I tested Leadheads 215gr SWC over 8.5gr and 8.7gr of Unique @ 10yd off hand. I didn't even bother shooting the loads I had loaded with 8.9gr & 9.1gr as the other two were right on the money:D

Now I just have to figure out which load I want to settle on.
Here is the first target with 6rds of 8.5gr of Unique as you can see I pulled my first 2 rounds:eek: I'm still trying to get used to the single action grip frame.
View attachment 555391

I made a minor windage adjustment and shot the remaining 4 rnds again @ 10yd off hand, one shot completely missed:banghead:
View attachment 555392

Here is the 8.7gr load, there is supposed to be 10 rnds but again I missed again:banghead:
View attachment 555393

I hope that either of these two loads will be sufficient for the little piggies, what do you all think? There as slight leading but not as much as I thought there would be. It came out pretty easily with some hoppes #9 and a bore brush.

BTW you should have seen some of the looks I was getting from other folks at the range:D Especially when I strted to nail the 2" bull:D Everyone else was shooting eveywhere on the one of those FBI bad guy type targets.

I wanna join too..
I have a couple of 41 blackhawks.
I'm currently looking for a bisley grip frame if anyone has 1.
I discovered a sweet accurate load of 800x powder under a 240 gr gtbullet lswc giving around 900 to 950 fps.

Ok, a question for you guys who have a Andy Horvath Blackhawk. In speaking with him it appears his speciality is taking a medium frame (357) gun, re-boring it to 41 special. My question to the masses is, have anyone here just had him shorten the barrel to 4", crown it, and rework the grip frame, along with an action job, of their standard 41 Magum? I would have him put that glossy deep bluing on too. Just wondering.

Wow nice to see this thread is still alive and going strong, who would’ve thunk?
