Coyote or Dog ?

there’s something living and breeding around here (because I’ve seen them over a 30 year span) that predates the coyote arrival that definitely looks more wolf than dog.

given enough time all human bred characteristics, what we know as breeds, will disappear.

I ran this thread on a hunting forum , where I'm a member also . With only 4 people with opinions there , one was a coyote hunter .

Combined results of the responses that I counted is , its a dog .

Dog - 10
Coy - dog - 5
Coyote - 2

Interesting the coyote hunter said , coyote , with the onset of mange .

I didn't add my vote , but after seeing it better than the picture I posted and how it moved , how it looked , the condition of its coat , how it carried its tail and how it reacted when it saw me . It just didn't put 50 yards between us , it loped for cover , 300 yards away and moved more like a coyote than a dog . It is strange that it returned to the area where it saw me a couple hours later and laid down . I know that spot if full of squirrels , there was even a hawk hunting there that morning . My first thoughts when I saw it , were coyote , but then its size and color had me guessing that . After my brother-in-law reminded me about that white wolf hybrid pet that was lost , I vote wolf hybrid offspring from a coyote . I am not a betting man , but I would bet $100 dollars that it is not a dog .

I'm no geneticist, but what exactly defines a "coy dog"? If the dog portion was 3 or 4 or 7 generations back is it still a coy dog? Coyotes have been interbreeding with dogs for quite a long time at this point and it has become more common as they've moved east. Seems entirely plausible that at some point in the future they'll all have some dog in their ancestry.

If it were at my place, I'd be feeding it already lol. Then you can get better looks at it and check prints.

Our yotes out here on the prairie are no where near that size. A 50 pounder is huge for here, and that is every bit of 70 pounds.

That is a dog. Find its tracks. If they are round, you can be sure. Yote tracks are noticably more pointed, and wolf tracks are even more pointed than yotes...
See my question above. How much dog does a coyote have to have in it before that rule of thumb doesn't apply? I imagine it varies by the individual.

I was always told that if it runs with it's tail down it's a Coyote but just looking at the picture it looks like a dog

Its tail was down every time I saw it , that was one of the things that made me think it was a coyote or cross .

The reason that I would figure that it's a dog is that the proportions of the head don't look quite right for a coyote. The nasal bone forward of the eyes looks to be too short. And the down-angle in front of the eyes isn't quite steep enough or deep enough.
