So... The important question is... Which M-16?

M-16
M-16A1
M-16A2
or
M-16A4

Since you said Carry Handle, that probably means the A4 is off the table. Prior to A2 you will be looking for the triangular handguards and a different stock. Prior to A1 you will been needing different receivers. Lot's of choices to make.

I built an A1 knockoff (assuming you want an A1? the mention of handguards makes me think so?), and if I was going to do it again today, I'd start with a complete A1 upper from Brownells.

https://www.brownells.com/rifle-par...upper-receivers-complete-5-56-prod123697.aspx

It's expensive, but A1 receivers are near-as-dammit impossible to find IME, especially complete. I spent $520 for mine at Rguns (they don't stock it any more) and this one gets a LOT more of the little details right (already comes with the triangle handguards, correct flash hider, round front sight post, slick side receiver, etc). I'd encourage you to shop around and add the price up, but by the time you get spending $150 for the stripped upper, maybe $200 for the barrel, $100-ish for a good bolt, buy the handguards, get a cocking handle, get a sight kit to finish the upper, etc etc, I don't think you will save that much money by rolling your own.

It's 10% off today ($585), and if you wait a couple weeks, I bet they'll have the same sale again.

A1 stock and handguard

thats what i want. that should fit the s&w m&p15 sport 2?

The pistol grip would, the buttstock wouldn't (you would need a "rifle" buffer tube that doesn't have the notches for your adjustable stock) and I think a different spring and buffer? the tube wrenches off the back of your gun), and the handguards would be too long.

I think I have seen mini triangle handguards out there for carbine-length actions, which is what your Sport has. Probably worth a Google search.

There’s nothing complicated about building an AR-15. All you really need to do to accomplish your M16 clone is pick which version and find compatible parts. I would recommend against rebuilding an M&P Sport, simply because you’re buying too many parts twice, AND because it sounds like you’re wanting a fixed carry handle model. The furniture set for A1’s is pretty simple with Brownell’s retro line, but I’m not sure the sights are easy to find right now? I personally prefer the A2 rear sight, so all of my fixed handle rifles are A2’s, not A1’s.

Take a look at “National Match” rifles/uppers from Bushmaster, Rock River, Compass Lake, Etc... These will be 20” M16A2 clones, typically, purpose built for Service Rifle matches.

To convert you m&p sport you would need a rifle length buffer tube, buffer, and tube, which is an easy conversion, but the bigger thing is you would need a 20” barrel as well since the handguards wont fit your carbine length barrel.

You would be better off picking up a new upper and lower and building one.

yea the m&p is out. someone should make a carry handle that can be put on an ar15 receiver?

might go with the ar15 receiver my bro in law has, spike's tactical and some fancy bolt.

and a carry handle i can swap out to put a red dot sometimes maybe.

https://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/sights/rear-sights/ar-15-carry-handle-prod5567.aspx maybe this?

also i really want a .22lr conversion. what you all say about those?

You can deck out an AR out in any configuration your wallet will allow. An A2ish build would probably be cheapest and easiest as many manufacturers make those parts. If you want more of a Vietnam era build Brownells and Fulton Armory have everything for most of them.
I've got a A2 service match rifle built on a Colt lower with a White Oak upper that I've had forever and one of my latest I wanted a Vietnam inspired build did a XM177ish build found the upper at Delta Team Tactical forward assist and rear sight from Fulton. The stock is a model 1 sales the barrel is where I really strayed it's a PSA 14.7 mid gas with their mid length round handguard and a slip over XM177 style flashhider, mine is a DPMS which are discontinued but a Google search for "slip over xm177 flashhider" got me plenty of options.
The first picture is mine the second is a AirCav soldier holding the real deal.

As for 22 conversions go with a complete gun or dedicated upper the rifling twist is better suited for 22s and you're not spending that much more. IMG_20180923_144820984.jpg 7ec7fbbbd7e550896a5d99ad5f43660a.jpg

Putting a detachable carry handle onto a flattop AR for an A1 or A2 Clone project is a no-no. The carry handles were something which specifically made them what they were. Kinda sounds like you should ask yourself why you’re building a clone, because building one without being true to form, especially when building/buying true to form clones is SO EASY these days, just doesn’t make any sense. It’s not a clone if it’s not a clone, and a detachable handle on an A1 or A2 would be about as silly as it gets.

As for 22LR conversions, the CMMG conversion works as well as anything, but not as well as a dedicated 22LR upper, which doesn’t work as well itself as a dedicated 22LR AR-type rifle. I personally don’t use my conversion bolt much, as I don’t really like the idea of 22LR ammo in my AR-15 for reliability long term.

Brownells, Fulton Armory, Aero Precision , FN and possibly Colt(?) all make legit retro rifles.

Fulton Armory is the one ive shot the most.

My buddies uncle has a Fulton Armory M14 and M16 clone, set up just like the ones he used in Vietnam. Nice rifles, although not really my "style" lol. He let me go shoot in a local run and gun match ,for ***** and giggles.

There are some subtle things to consider, too.
The M16-Anothing had what would today be called a "pencil" barrel. It also would have what is called an :eek:pen prong" flash suppressor, too. But, mostly it would not have a forward bolt assist.
That would want a lower fitted with a rifle stock. You can mount one on a lower with the adjustable stock, but, that is not the same "look" at all.

For the M16A1, the Brownell's upper just needs a rifle stocked lower.

For the M16A2, you need a 20" barrel, the round handguards, and a stocked lower (there's quibbling over whether you ought use a "stepped" barrel profile with the mounting point for an M203 or not).

Building XM177 clones is a different proposition, but one that can be enjoyable and fruitful.

Numrich/Gun Parts should have pretty much everything youre looking for, and most likely the actual M16 parts.

You may have to clean up the stock and handguards, but thats easily done.

I used to get M16 furniture sets from Northridge for cheap, like $20 a set, and in good shape, but that was a while ago, and last I checked, theyve gone up a good but.

Just make sure if you go the M16/M16A1 route for the stock, you get the right buffer screw. The A2 screws are too long, and will drive you nuts with feeding issues.

I've had two 11.5 bbls w welded on 5.5" flash hiders.
1 in 9 twist.
Some folks say that they won't shoot.
Both were sub MOA w 55gr stuff.

Plus the detachables are about useless as a carry handle, pretty much just a really heavy rear sight assembly.
