I bought my Grandson a 10/22 Takedown for Christmas. It came with one BX-1, 10 round magazine. I bought him a single clear BX-1 magazine and I also got him a 3-pack of the black BX-1 mags so he would have 5 total. We are in California so 10 rounders are the max capacity.

I took him to the range yesterday to shoot his new rifle for the first time and we had problems. I explained to him that these things happen so he wasn’t too disappointed but I sure was.

3 of the 5 mags locked up and wouldn’t feed upon the first time using them. Without disassembly I don’t know why they froze up. We loaded them with 10 rounds of Remington Golden Bullet ammo. The tenth round went in and they froze up.

I am not impressed or amused. It’s obvious Ruger has cut corners on their newer magazines as opposed to the ones I have that I bought years ago.

I am not sure if I should disassemble and attempt a repair or just contact Ruger.

Anyone else have issues with these magazines?

Never had a single issue with that magazine. They are one of the better designs out there. Call Ruger

Those are the California compliant magazines. Any attempt to actually load 10 rounds into them will cause them to lock up. Of course this is "for the children".

I haven't had any problems. I purchased a couple of three packs on Black Friday and all six mags work fine. Of course I'm in Texas....

Make sure the rounds are seated straight and mag pushed in snug. I think there is a 10/22 mag disassembly video Rugers web sight or You Tube. Try different ammo maybe

Thank you, Gents.

There is no difference in CA mags vs any others that I know of so I doubt that’s it.

I have lots of experience with these mags and know the disassembly / reassembly process. I am just baffled how 2 different packages of 10/22 mags could have these problems. We also loaded some Aguila ammo and had issues after fighting to get the Golden Bullet ammo out of one of them.

Guess I will call Ruger tomorrow.

Are you sure it’s a mag issue? When the mags are inserted into the rifle, are you able to move them forward and rearward any? I have a 10/22 that allowed the mags to do this, and simetimes they would get stuck in the rearward position, causing malfunctions. I had to add a few shims on the front of the trigger assembly to fix the problem. Just an idea.

Never had a single problem with any of my Ruger factory 10 round mags. Can't say the same about any Remington rimfire ammo. Maybe try some CCI MiniMags or Federal Auto Match ammo.

I did think it was a positioning problem at first but it is internal to the magazines. It’s almost as if by installing the tenth round the drum within the magazine binds up and the spring will not move the drum to place the top round high enough for the bolt to strip it from the mag and insert it into the breech of the barrel.

I have never encountered this with new Ruger mags in the past, but thinking about it, I have seen this with really dirty mags but it takes a lot of rounds fired to get a mag dirty enough to bind up.

I had a problem with a new rifle, called Ruger, sent it back and it came back fixed. I would definitely call them.

I have a bunch of the 15 rounders, with no problems.

The old 10 round mags were/are notorious for losing mags spring strength if left loaded for a week or more.
Maybe not a problem for most, but if you take a .22 along nearly everyday, you find this a problem after awhile. The spring simply wont advance them faster than the bolt gos back and returns.
Never had any lock up, though.

I bought a 3 pack last year. All three failed to consistently feed and caused jams during the first loading. However after the initial loadings, they smoothed right out. Haven't had an issue with any of the three since that very first use.

I had the same problem with a ten round 77/22 mag, I bought last year. I had to adjust the magazine screw, it was a little to tight. Less then a quarter turn and the mag works fine.

Odd. I have eleven of the 10 round rotary magazines, all acquired within the last 2-3 years, and all work fine.

I only have experience with my own 1022, which I have owned for 30+ years, but I have mags as new as 3(ish) years old, and others going to the one that came with the gun. Never had problems with any, and never had any idea that Ruger had changed anything along the line with them. Call Ruger- they have excellent customer service in my experience.

I have had problems with Remington Golden Bullets and the 10/22 magazine. I have a Takedown as well and was using the RGB when the problem started. I switched ammo based and the problem resolved. I have a ton of RGB to shoot, but fortunately have some bolt actions to run them through. It is very frustrating to have this happen, especailly when shooting with young folks.

I've had mags from the 60s/70s (thousands of rounds through them) and they ran fine.
Newer ones too.
Never had a problem.
But my newest 10/22 mag is at least 5 yrs old.
FWIW I don't run Remington .22 ammo.

I just talked to Ruger. The nice lady said to send the magazines in to them and they would replace them. She said using Remington Golden Bullets should have no effect on magazine operation.

So, I will ship them in and update when they are replaced.

Having owned over a dozen BX-1 magazines for over 20 years and worn out many 25 and 50 round mags I have a little experience with these mags. The BX-1 mags I have bought and used in the past have always been excellent. I have probably bought close to 30 or more and have given some to fellow shooters and friends. I can only ever remember having a problem with 1 mag that wasn’t due to dirt and burnt powder.

I just find it odd that out of 5 magazines all recently purchased that 3 would be problematic.

Anyway, Ruger will make good on them.

I would try some stingers or hv cci anything before I send them back. Remington is still the bottom feeder when it comes to .22 lr ammo & has been for 50 years.

Wow, I too have had nothing but success with the Ruger rotary mags in .22 Lr and .22 WMR... glad Ruger will make things right, they have always come through for me.

Stay safe!

A while back I got a handful of the clear 10 rnd mags and think a few needed to be reset because the springs weren't assembled right. There's little to go wrong inside the mag...so if nothing obvious is sticking out...the spring tension would cost nothing to reset and see if it resolves the problems.

I'll be interested in the update, and I hope this is resolved quickly, Pat Riot. I also find this interesting, because one of the best things Ruger has ever produced (IMHO) is the rotary 10/22 magazine. I've got half a dozen that I've picked up over the course of 35+ years of 10/22 ownership, without any notable problems out of any of them. Heck, when I was considering my latest .22 purchase, one of the reasons I went with the Ruger American Rimfire was that it uses 10/22 magazines.

I don't have a 10/22, but about a year ago I bought a Ruger American Rimfire that uses those same rotary mags. I got one of those 3-packs from Ruger as well and didn't have any trouble loading/unloading them, but I could tell right off the bat that the spring tension in them was different than the one that came with my rifle (wound tighter I think). I just opened them up, re-tensioned them (plenty of you-tube videos and forum posts on how to do it, and how tight to wind the spring), and screwed them back together. They've worked flawlessly for me ever since. I've probably got around 750 rounds through that gun now, spread across the 4 mags.

I'd also avoid those Remmington Golden Bullets (or Thunderbolts). Even in my bolt gun, I've found one out of every 20 or so won't chamber properly (both GB's and Thunderbolts). No trouble at all with CCI, Blazer (made by CCI), or Federal Auto Match. At least with the Thunderbolts, I can also hear audible differences in the report between rounds.

Are you sure they are ten rounders? I saw five round magazines listed in a catalog that looked identical to the tens.
