As others have said, the H&R Sportsman series, if you can find one at a decent price. If you don't mind top-break, the 999 could be, if it was well adjusted, a great SA shooter.

This cracked me up in the Ruger ad, "Allows a variety of grip styles to be installed, leaving ample room for recoil cushioning. Includes a full-sized smooth Hogue® Tamer™ grip, which is highly effective at reducing felt recoil."

Really, taming the mighty .22?

Lolol. Their website guy probably did a copy and paste of the content from the non-rimfire versions, and didn't delete the "recoil" text. :D

I'd give a nod also to the Taurus M94 though, like the Rossi, it has been discontinued. Almost bought myself a second one a few weeks back when it popped up in a used-gun case at the shop I frequent, but I had just recently bought from them an older, very nice 63-3 Smith and Wesson.

I paid $270 for one of these, Rossi "Plinker" off Gunbroker. My FFL who did the transfer said I "stole it". It had had very little use. 99% blue remaining and locks up tight. Now discontinued but Taurus still makes one like it. Its accurate and surprisingly well made. It is usually found on the table beside me on my front porch waiting for some critter to show itself.

I really like this revolver and the Taurus M94. Wonder why they discountinued them.

The Taurus 94 is infamous for having the world’s longest hardest most unusable double action trigger pull EVAR....

Looking for a double action 22 revolver with a cylinder that swings out. Not wanting to spend much over 500 dollars. I really liked the looks of the Rossi Plinker but I see its discountinued.and cant find any used I see charter arms makes one in the price I like but not so wild on the rubber grip stainless look. Not wanting to spend the high dollars on S&W because trap line guns are treated rough. Am I missing a gun here ? All sorts of Semi auto 22 pistols for 400 bucks and cheaper but no one can make a nice wood gripped blued one thats not a single action.

I own two .22 Ruger's...one is a .22WMR LCR and the other is a .22WMR LCRx in 3". "Beauty" of course, is in the eye of the beholder. I personally feel they're both attractive firearms.

The really important feature is they both are rock solid, dependable firearms. The .22LR of course has an 8 shot cylinder as opposed to a 6 shot in the magnum.

The 3" comes with an adjustable rear sight that allows you to dial in the specific bullet and grain weight that you intend to shoot.

On top of that... they're just a fun gun to shoot. Albeit the severe recoil! LOL

I would come up with extra scratch and get something like this.

On second thought after I noticed the seller wants a ridiculous $60 for shipping I say forget it. It would be a great gun and just what you are looking for but there is no way in hades the shipping should be $60 on that gun. Good Grief!

I would check with Buds if you like this gun. See what they can get one for and they always ship free.

If you are open to used and look hard (and a little lucky), there are several S&Ws that can be had. I managed to score a S&W K17 Masterpiece at a flea market for $550.

Howdy

Believe it or not I only paid $500 for this S&W K-22 that shipped in 1932.

The grips are incorrect, and somebody laid their trigger finger along the frame a bazillion times, so there is no blue left there. I bought it at a live auction, the high roller bidders were not interested because the condition was less than perfect. Boy, were they wrong, this old girl is the most accurate of all the 22 revolvers I own.

Did you specify a barrel length? My dealer has a nice, Taurus 96 in his case. The Taurus 96 is essentially a copy of Smith and Wesson's Model 17.

A K-frame sized gun, with a six inch barrel, adjustable sights, target style wood grips. I've owned one in the past, and found it to be a fine shooter. The one at my dealers is tagged under $300.00. I've been tempted to but this one, but I don't care for guns with a barrel longer than 3".

They didn't make a lot of them I don't think, but it's well worth looking for, especially at that price.

Another worthy contender is the old High Standard Sentinel. Again a K-frame size, nine shot, hand ejector style revolver, with fixed sights, an aluminum frame, steel cylinder/barrel, etc.. When I lived up in the country, I had one that I carried just about everywhere. In an Uncle Mikes Sidekick holster, it felt like it wasn't there. Plenty accurate enough for pine cones and such.

I don't have any pictures, but google is your friend.

The SP101 is a nice revolver, built strong, but IMO a 30 oz .22 revolver is overkill and $500 is overpriced for what are not guns built for comfortable shooting. With the .327 I have, the grip is not comfortable and both the DA and SA trigger pulls are meh. Also, pulling the hammer back to cock requires more effort than you'd think, so add the rimfire springs to that and it's a recipe for disappointment.

I can accept some disappointment with a $300 .22 revolver, but I can't with a $500 one. I'd rather have a semi auto .22 like the Ruger Mark, S&W Victory, or Buckmark for that money. I think you get more value with them and if you live in a free state you can put a suppressor on them.

I can’t wait for Rock Island to make one! Their 38 is great at a $275 price point. I would scour the used rack for deals.

Hi...
Probably a bit large for what you want but a used Dan Wesson .22LR revolver is a great rimfire double action revolver.
Mine is very accurate with a variety of ammunition and I picked it up at a gun show for $450 a few years ago.
Again it is a large heavy revolver with the 8-3/8" barrel and full underlug but it is a very well made firearm.

I am sort of in the same boat as the OP. My range shooting used to be at 15 yards. I have a 6" K22 and a 6.5" Single Six that will do that very well. However, my shooting buddy is my FiL, and he is strongly preferring to shoot at seven yards lately (due to his eyes, I suspect). That's cool with me, but I really like shooting 22 revolvers, and shooting 6" plus target revolvers at that distance is kind of silly.

So I would like to get a 22 revolver with a 2" or 3" barrel with nice sights and trigger. I am also a cheapskate and definitely not willing to pay as much as $500 for something like that.

I've owned and handled a bunch of 22 revolvers. Some of them, such as the Taurii, Rossi, H&R, etc. you have to get pretty lucky to find a 22 revolver with a decent trigger. I'm starting to suspect that I should probably get a Ruger LCRx in 22lr. They have nice sights and triggers. They cost more brand-new than I am willing to pay, but if I am patient I should be able to get a used one for $350 or so. It may take a while.

8D93E6E4-8380-4048-A752-9091128A5C06.jpeg christmas gifted myself a five star speedloader and loading block for the ruger lcr 22lr, which i’ve greatly enjoyed since it first came to market.

i only wish that ruger first came out with the 3” barrel, exposed hammer lcr-x. i would have passed on the lighter s&w 317 with its aluminum cylinder that heat binds.

Whether it is a model 34 or 35 , if you are able to acquire a S&W 22/32 within your budget you are set for life. Yes , I'd buy that revolver for $550 if I were in your shoes.

Does anyone have some hands on time with any of the charter pathfinder models? There’s a .22 ultralight (12oz) with a 2” barrel, da/sa that looks appealing. The normal model is 19oz.
