I have a cheapo ATI .45 ACP 1911 Commander. I paid so little for it, I am thinking of spending a little taking on the challenge of upgrading it for moderate expense. Not cosmetic improvement but rather accurizing. I know Wilson is highly regarded in this area and will consider them. Most likely whoever I use for the work, the parts will be Wilson or equivalent.

Can anyone recommend other folks for me to consider for such work at fair prices? I’m not looking for cheap, just reasonable. We are talking trigger replacement and lightening, match grade barrel and bushing, adjustment of the slide to frame fit (tightening if necessary) and anything else that falls into this basket of improvements. Any help is appreciated.

I haven't looked lately but at one time Wilson Combat would only work on certain brands of firearms and some of the other top tier places might be the same.

So your planing on sending the gun in for upgrades? If so let the smith make recommendations.

I would on parts use EGW angle bore bushings. These can be installed by you. You just need to measure your slide and barrel and they make it work. As for trigger groups I would recommend (John) Harrison Design ignition sets with the TR sear. Have the trigger set at what weight you prefer, every one is different on this. These are almost drop in fit, may require some fitting or may not, all depends on the gun tolerance.

If you are going to dump money into a hole, it should be one you dig.

Think of it like building a hot rod or race car, pay someone to do it and it’s just a way to spend money you won’t be able to recover. If you are going to pay a good Smith, use good parts. You don’t want to put $1000 into a $300 pistol and wind up with a pistol that would sell for $400.

If you want to learn what makes them tick yourself, a cheap one is a great place to start though.
