Southern Michigan Deer Rifle

There’s some great information here - thank you. I’m currently using a Thompson muzzleloader that gets the job done well and I have no complaints about, but am looking for a gun that I “enjoy” hunting and shooting with.

The M77 is about as close to what I’m looking for as I’ve seen. Thank you!

I currently hunt northern MI. I realize that the day may come when I either cannot or choose not to hunt northern MI and I'll be limited to the southern rules. I've contemplated something in .450 BM but I keep holding out. The Ruger M77/44 is a good choice, and ammo should be readily available most anywhere. The options are limited today somewhat to .357mag, 44mag, and .450 BM with some other lever action rifles filling the field. I really would like to see what happens with the .350 Legend, and what rifles will be offered. A good blackpowder rifle is probably a better choice than most except for limited to one shot essentially.

Wouldn't it be fun if they brought out the .350 legend in a retro Lever...something like the old Win 88, a sleek Pump and Semi auto configuration as well? I think something with an external resemblance to and similar handling to an M1 Carbine would be a big seller, and not just in the states with those cartridge laws for hunting! There's a fairly big interest in retro guns of the 40's and 50's currently. They could probably make the magazines interchange between the 3.

If going .460 S&W.............they did make a proper looking Ruger #1 in that.
I tried to get one a few yrs ago.

As a Michigan hunter I would suggest that you look at a TC Contender or Encore You are already using a single shot so you know you can be successful Both guns are chambered in the 357Max, which is an excellent choice. They are also available in other legal chamberings. Plus if you don't like the caliber you buy, then a new barrel is cheaper than a new rifle.

If cost is a factor look at one of the H&R types single shots. They can often be found at very affordable prices especially on the used market. You might even find one with a companion shotgun barrel

It's not a straight wall cartridge gun but if you can find a savage 10 ml at a reasonable price. You could have a 50 cal rifle to shoot to 300 yds. Most of them can be loaded with smokeless rifle powder. It will get you bullet diameter and plenty of muzzle energy.

I know there's guy's trimming .444 Marlins's to 1.80", loading and using them for lower Mi..
.... I bet you're correct; sounds like something I would do in that situation. Wonder how much of an effect that shorter case has on the ballistics of a 444?

Research to find the best school districts in Texas.
Apply to all of the good ones.
Accept best offer and move to Texas.
Your dilemma is gone.

I think with a lever or single shot rifle and either the the 44 Mag 225 grain Hornady FTX loaded ammunition, or with 140 grain 357 loaded ammunition, you'd be in tall clover. The reload data says that the 44 will do about 1750 FPS out of a 20" barrel, and that the 357 will be nipping at 2000 out of an 18.5" barrel.

BTW, I moved here from St. Joseph about 23 years ago.

If you want something fun to shoot and want easy to find ammo, I think your best options are .357 or .44mag lever actions. I'd probably go with the .44.

Cross the lake and hunt in Wisconsin. We can use almost anything statewide.

I'd opt for a Marlin in .44 mag. or if you have $$, a Ruger auto in .44 Mag. Bonus with the auto; you can load them up pretty hot.

Nice! I lived in St. Joseph for several years after college.
