Primer pullback to the extreme

I just had a particularly bad run of 100 9mm I tried to load. Of the 100 casings fed into the press, 14 had pull back. No particular rhyme or reason, various head stamps...drives me crazy. Here are the culprits;

Any one else ever have a run that bad? I have some of the dillon sizer dies with the snap spring coming in the mail to alleviate this problem (more like an epidemic), but until then ugh...I wonder if I should just wait until they come, before I give my self an aneurism.
 
Remove the primer pin, chuck it in a drill and stone a short taper on the end and into a ball shape on the very end.

edit: the primers that get pulled back into the primer pocket are usually because they were crimped, needing more force to remove and that extra force stuck/wedged the pin into the primer anvil. Then it was pulled back into the pocket, the reason I de-prime before tumbling, I can feel the harder effort and chamfer the pocket.
So when I run them on the progressive there's no smooge from de-priming all over my press.

Is this problem unique to Dillon dies or am I going to get same with my Lee dies? Too bad primer has to go in at station 2 - could put universal decap in station one so they're getting hit twice.

No I have Hornady, Redding, RCBS, Lyman, and Dillon sizing dies. I get the problem on all the 308, 9mm, 223, 45 ACP 357 mag, and I cant remember what else...but the only dies that DONT do that are the Dillon Carbide pistol dies. They have a spring loaded deccaping pin that snaps back down and prevents it. I guess it shoots the stuck primer off the end. The only reason I know they do is because when I bought my Dillon super 1050, it came preloaded with 45 ACP dies...and low and behold no primer pull back. So I ordered the 9mm one and a 357 carbide sizers yesterday from Dillon. I have NO CLUE why they don't offer the same for their rifle dies.

The only progressive press i know of that you can hit them twice before the priming is the 1050...possibly the Mark7 Evolution and Revolution presses...not familiar enough with them. But then you sacrifice the swaging station..so yeah..if any of the big name Reloading MFGs are listening, there is a big hole in the market here.

Tilos, I will give that a shot. I have followed the advice of several of the MFGs some said to polish the pin....didn't work. Some said to file it a bit shorter so the edges were sharp and square....nope. one said to file it at a 45 degree angle ...doesn't work either. I.am always open to suggestions.

I would take advantage of the case feeder and just run the universal decapper before tumbling. If there is a persistent problem in later seating primers, you may have to sort head stamps to find a culprit.
 
I somehow managed to BREAK my lee universal decap doing my first batch of 223. I then proceeded to BREAK my decap pin off my RCBS small base die. I think it was user error not being used to that forward stroke and not having the case fully into the shellplate. But the Lee didn't even try to push up - just snapped so whatever I did, I had some kind of angle on it to snap it that way.

Anyway, 2 decap pins down & not feeling like waiting for replacement parts (have yet to hear from RCBS on how to get a replacement, Lee one getting here today or tomorrow). So I made what I think will be a better decap pin for the Lee. I took some 416 stainless and turned down a rod to .200 & polished it with scotchbrite pad. Then center drilled a spot, then drilled with a #52 drill about an inch deep. Then I filled that tiny hole with JB weld and inserted the #52 drill back in the hole - point in. That left a decap rod with a stiff decap pin sticking out (the back of the drill), & it has a smooth but square end. So I'll be using the entire surface area against the primer and I have a stiffer pin.

Only used on a couple to make sure it worked and seemed OK. If I do same thing as before, will snap this one too, but should be stronger, so maybe not.

Looks like this pretty much.

Since I had to trim & clear crimps anyway, I used universal decap #1 & then sizing die in #2. Until I started shearing pins, everything was getting hit with 2 decap pins so I didn't see the pullback problem. Unless I want to just add a crap ton of time won't have that setup for pistol so not looking forward to that issue. It just stops you at #2 since new primer won't go it? Or is it causing more issues than that when it happens?

I was having a heck of a time with pull back and my Hornady dies. I got a set of Dillon dies and haven't have a single pull back since. Do your Dillon dies have the spring loaded decapping pin?
 
I have never had the problem, had to figure out what "pull back" is. I use both Lee and Dillon dies, usually have 'em mixed.

I have never heard of that term nor experienced it. You learn something new every day :)

When I had this issue with a caliber, don't remember which, I modded the shape of the end of the decapping pin until it no longer stuck in the primer pulling it back up.

The only dillon dies I have used so far are the 45 acp ones that came on my 1050. And yes that sizer has the spring loaded pin. And I dont get pull back with that one.
