The thread about Handguns and Knifes got me thinking...I recently added pepper spray to my carry arsenal...my reasoning being there may be times that the use of deadly force isn't warranted but some defensive action is required. Anyone else use it in their reportoire? IMG_20190105_172328810.jpg

Sabre Red...we ditched that for Phantom. Same exact ingredients, but the delivery method makes a HUGE difference. We called Sabre Red "seasoning in a can", and Phantom is the devil's own farts. It will work, but use more than the standard one to two second burst.
That can of yours has been around - check the expiration date, and test fire it about once every six months...outside...

Been something I've pondered for the bicycle rides. Have mostly come across woofers which i've been able to out pedal. One of my prior encounters was some rowdy kids which luckily they were on skateboards so they were unable to get up to speed. There were 4 of them and I was alone so that would not have been a good encounter.

I've kept OC on hand for 8 years now, and EDC'd it for the last 4. I've trained with it for as long too. I see a lot of LE training online has more to do with getting hit with it and trying to continue to function well enough to protect your sidearm and so on. I'm not a masochist, so I just train hitting paper plate targets. Inert training cans are sold, but after as many years, I just use up old or expiring cans. Every six months is a good interval and it serves as both a test of the equipment (which I do not re-use), and a refresher on how the nozzle works and what to expect from the stream or spray cone. I carry a small stream can with a pocket clip, but work it out whether stream, spray or foam is best for you in the various places you might keep it. For the vehicles and house, I like the big cans.

In 8 years, I've not had to use it. There was once when I needed it and wasn't carrying it. That's when I started EDC. Most probable target for me is dogs that attack because of my own dog, including stray dogs and coyotes. But I also live where I can encounter bears several times a year. Of the many bears I've come across, I've never encountered an aggressive one though. I've always just admired them, but they can aggressively pursue food in your camp. My dog is more than enough to keep them away though. Other dogs, not so much.

You'll find several threads on OC here, but the stickied thread on defensive spray is very extensive.

As pointed out, check your expiration dates. Unlike most other defensive tools your OC should be replaced periodically. Like most others, one size does not fit all applications so users should consider if a keychain or fire extinguisher size is what they need to have.

My bad...I did not see the stickied thread. I read thru a large part of it and there is a lot of good information there if you're inclined to know the technicals of it.

I got first hand knowledge many years ago by a prankster cop friend who lightly sprayed some on the defroster vents of my work truck. Drove around all day with a severe case of tearing up. I paid him back with some perfume on his carpet by the heater floor vents of his car. He ended up getting divorced and I often wondered if I contributed to it.

The can in the picture is only less than a month old. That is the results of carrying it next to my knife in my rear pocket one day. I usually dedicate one pocket for it but for some reason not that day.

I have been live hit by 3 different types of spray. Sabre Red, First Defense .4%, and Freeze +p. I use Freeze as my EDC pocket spray as 1) it was the worst stuff I got hit by of the 3 kinds and 2) it is the most highly recommended spray of the officers I worked in the sheriff's office with.

First Defense .4% is for training. The FD .7 is better, but you'd want to use it if you experienced the 1.3%; it's some of the best out there. It's now owned by Safariland, and the current MK4s come in a "360" can, has a bladder so it can be sprayed holding the can sideways or upside-down. Good stuff.

.4% was what we were authorized to use inside our corrections facility. Even after showing my certification for Freeze I wasn't allowed to use it. Told it was "too potent for indoor use." I saw the 360 formula but I never knew anyone I worked with who couldn't spray in any orientation. I worked with one officer who sprayed with her can upside down or on the side multiple times.

Probably not. The divorce rate in law enforcement is pretty high. Long hours and crazy schedules tends to put quality time on a back burner. Gallows humor and looking at anyone who isn't a cop as a potential suspect doesn't help.

I like the Kimber Pepper blaster for spray myself. Its very light and pushing hot sauce out at around 100 mph seems like a good idea to me. I would never want to rely on spray alone. I will always carry a knife of some sort at the very least when I carry spray. it just does not work on everyone.

I’ve been sprayed several times by friendly fire. If you are trying to help out a friend in a fight (when legal), rather than spraying them both down you can spray your hand and wipe your hand across a face pretty easily. Your friend should thank you.

If you're close enough to wipe your hand on the thug's face, why not just spray him directly in the nose or mouth or eyes.?

Think about the "spray" application. The person you're trying to assist can get sprayed while grappling the intended target.

Any body use "tear gas pens" that fire a screw on cartridge anymore ? I know they are more dangerous , but they did work and scare hell out of the reciever

I've used that very brand and size of spray shown in the original post on a dog that would chase me on my bike commute to work. Very effective.

“Spray” spreads everywhere. If you spray someone’s face, some of it is likely going other places, like on your partner. A quick wipe on the eyes tends to keep it on the intended face and is generally a quick fight stopper.

In some EU countries they, and blank firing replica guns, are quite popular - firing CS or OC loaded cartridges. Vastly ineffective compared to a good OC spray.

While harder to find, and sometimes more expensive, there are pepper gels that aren't as easy to blow around in the wind. Less chance of getting back wind to spray yourself or a friend.
