I need a bolt action with a AR-15 barrel in my life.

I was thinking, with all these good cheap ar barrels, like bcm that are from 50 to 100 bucks for most. even 224V and 6.5G. are cheap. only if someone made a bolt action that would make use of these barrels, the action could be cheap to make to. just use the AR barrel nut for the handguards, a pistol grip and any AR butt stock you like. A simple mag well is all that's needed. the use of the ar-15 bolt head could be used on a 2 peace bolt body, then you could just change the bolt head for the new chambering.

For the gas port you could just use a undrilled gas block. I have looked and have not found anyone doing this, i was thinking of making a side charge ar but with no gas system. and use it as a straight pull. well just thought i would share this with you, have any off you thut the same. ps. I live in new york state other wise the normal semi auto would be fine. thanks. troy.

I have tinkered with this, the only real downside to using an ar15 bolt is you don't get the camming action a standard bolt gun has. So instead of the brilliant design of the ar gas system loosening up a fired case in the chamber, you have to yank it out manually. It does work though, but don't try it with a weak extractor.

There is a company in California that makes a bolt catch that catches the bolt EVERY time it cycles, rendering the rifle non semi auto (as opposed to "fully semi auto" sarcasm) for California compliance. Might work for new york too, I'll find a link...

this seems like an interesting idea...set up a bolt (would have a mega low lift if using the same locking lug setup for AR's)
this could be expandable as well...short/small action for stuff up to like 6.8 SPC...you can go to 473 bolt face for AR10 level stuff...you can even use the lower of choice for each...swap your semi or class 3 upper for a bolt action setup and increase the potential range of your rig if you want that kind of flexibility.

there is some possibilities here methinks.

ya i saw the bolt catch, but i think ny ruled that it's not allowed because if you hold your hand on the release it's still semi. if they do allow it i may do that.

I've also thought about the bolt action AR, looks like it could done with another upper and BCG... I like the idea
I've seen a 50bmg that was a single shot that was on an AR15 lower

ya it's kinda so simple when you thin of it lol. wish i had money to do prototyping.

exactly...you don't want to fall into the trap of trying to overthink the problem (I can't count how many engineers I've seen do this).

like was mentioned...bear creek has a side charge upper...of course made of aluminum. perhaps an angle cut in a modified bcg that helps to transfer the upward motion into a "cam and extract" similar to a mauser 98 in cocking the firing pin?

even a modified spacer and a heaver spring for the buffer spring. to give the bolt more force to chamber. i just want to use the cheap barrels from bca and some others, bca has a 1 moa guarantee on all barrels 14'' and longer. https://www.bearcreekarsenal.com/barrels there are some nice barrels here. i blame this all on new york lol.

That makes sense in my head, modified bolt and carrier tho with the holes for the cam pin moved a little over 90 degrees.
The handle rotates the bolt to unlock, hits the "camming" surface in the bc and retracts the bolt for initial extraction

Maybe it's just been my unique experience, but I've installed about 300 adjustable gas blocks in my life... I start with the blocks fully closed, then open until they lock back... that first round where no gas is vented very typically requires the rifle to be "mortared," as there's no leverage advantage for primary extraction in the AR design as there is with a stickshift with a primary extraction cam. Now, I'm not a huge guy, definitely don't have the muscle mass I once did, but my deadlift still starts with a 5, but I don't think I'd have much interest in that "Kali-Key" monstrosity based on that experience...

at worst for me,in ny does allow it, is the bolt hold back after each round. an remember the name it's called. i just want a base to use the good cheap ar barrels out there, and not have to go featureless for a semi auto. the side charge upper may work to.
