I'm looking to get a higher quality scope this year. I'm in no hurry so I plan to shop around and find one for a good deal. Right now I have a prostaff 5 3.5-14x40 with the BDC reticle on a Savage 11 (I think? it's the heavy barrel variant) in .308.

I have a 300yd range semi-close to the house. I'd like to be able to shoot a hunting decent group at that range. Right now I don't like the reticle on my Nikon. I realize it's probably the Indian not the arrow but either way I'd like to upgrade.

I'm looking at going either a Zeiss v6, swarvoski hd5, Leupold vx6 or a vortex (not sure their equivalent yet.) I'm more interested in a 3-18x50 or similar. I plan to go for a traditional, but finer, crosshair.

I'd like to keep the price lower than those scopes usually go for. I'm looking at a demo/blemished unit since all of those offer good warrantees. Does anyone know where to browse to find deals like that?

Does anyone have any suggestions/obvious "gotchas" on my game plan?

Take a look at A&A Optics. They sell Vortex refurbs that carry the lifetime warranty. I bought two Viper HS LR last year that were advertised elsewhere for $900 for $540 each. Both looked brand new, not a mark on them and have worked perfectly.

CameraLandNY typically has lots of demo's to choose from, it seems the manufacturers on the demo's ebb and flow. Sometimes they have a lot of Leupold's, other times Vortex. It looks like currently it's a few Steiners, a bunch of Leica's, some Minox, etc.

The link should take you directly to their demo sport optics.

Seem's like the Leica's (don't know your price range, but you said higher quality but may be too expensive) would be what you're looking for given what is available in their demo department currently.

I've had friends who have bought their Vortex Demos and they have been like new, with full warranty.

Cameraland and Opticsplanet have both recently had some good deals. Be careful about fine reticles. They can be easily lost in low light or wooded areas. I like a traditional duplex where the reticle is heavy out to a point near the crossing point and they get thin there. Even in terrible conditions that makes the crosshairs much easier to pick up than true “fine” like the old Weaker K10 I had which had a true fine reticle.

And don’t forget about swfa because they carry a lot of used inventory that is very much still operable, their inventory is just more hit/miss than I like. Sometimes feels like a online yard sale.

When I bought my VX-6 I wanted Leupold only. I found a place that had it for about 40% less than any other place. Can’t remember the name of the outfit. Best suggestion is to keep Mr Google as your friend. I kept searching for a couple weeks and ended up saving about $400

Could buy a Leupold off the bay or used somewhere. Or a Vortex or Burris. That is how I get all my scopes. Who needs to buy a “refurb” when a used one still has a full warranty.

I have about 7 now that see frequent enough use and none have had a problem. Just make sure to buy a used one. There are quite a few clones out there on eBay that typically sell as new but at very low prices and usually ship from the Far East.
